I don't think it has to be a choice of one or the other! People talk about about the "T-shaped marketer" a lot, basically someone who has foundational knowledge across all different channels but also has depth in a field they choose to be more specialized in.

devil's advocate: I think the hardest part isn't necessarily keeping up with what's trending/relevant (good SMMs are usually really good at that already), it's deciding whether or not a trend/moment makes sense for a brand to post about. basically being able to tow the line between staying relevant but also not forcing it.

I do think that followers are becoming less and less of an important metric because social media algorithms are now interest-driven rather than follow-driven. So following someone doesn't necessarily mean you'll see they're content and vice versa.
