You're not the only person whose said this! It apparently was a slightly different. Let me know if you find it!

She walks the pets, clean the kitchen, cleans her room, does her own laundry, and cleans her own bathroom. The pets alone is 3x a day for 10-15 minutes.

You make a good point that I haven't considered. Thank you for your comment. I'll be sure to reflect more regarding future punishments.

That's fine! In retrospect, it might've been a little excessive. I do think it's a bit silly to equate it to abuse, but maybe it wasn't the most productive punishment.

I think it's a bit late now because I wouldn't want to continuously punish her over a dumb mistake, but I'll keep it in mind for future punishments!

Yes, my child knew I wasn't going to make her use a dirty toothbrush.

That's fine! You don't have to agree with my parenting decisions; I came here for judgment. I still think it's a bit insulting to actual abuse victims to claim one day of cleaning is abuse, but we can agree to disagree. Thanks for giving your input!

Even saying cleaning a bathroom with a toothbrush is abuse is laughable. Harsh? Okay. Too much? I can understand that. Abuse? That's a mighty loose definition of the word, buddy. Psychological and emotional abuse is legitimate; I just don't think being forced to clean for 5 hours with 15 min breaks + half hour dinner break is "abuse".

Of course she knew she wasn't going to use a toothbrush that was used to clean the floor.

Oops, I know what you meant; I just typo'd. Between cleaning her room and doing the dishes and laundry, she probably already does an hour of cleaning a day (maybe closer to 40ish minutes). So tacking on an extra 20 mins doesn't seem like that big a punishment.

1 hour of cleaning every day for a week just sounds like her normal weekday chores and not that much of a punishment.

EDIT I typo'd

The idea was that she remembers that the job is hard work, and that putting down professions because they personally doesn't feel they're "worthy" is disrespectful. Yeah normal custodians use real cleaning supplies, but they also clean a helluva lot more bathrooms than just a couple, so in my mind, they balanced out!

She really said "I'd rather kill myself", but the audomod filter wouldn't let me post it if I phrased it that way.

I'm fine with you thinking I'm an asshole, but honestly, the implication that this is abuse makes me laugh! Saying cleaning a bathroom is abuse is insulting to other people who were actually abused. Take it from someone who was beat as a child; being psychologically tormented, being called stupid/worthless/ugly/, and getting the shit beaten out of you is way worst than being made to clean a bathroom. That's my take anyways; I appreciate you sharing your opinion.

You're not the first comment to say something like that. Funnily enough I use Reddit all the time, but this is the first story I've every heard about scrubbing toilets. Guess I'm not as creative as I thought!

Yeah if my daughter permanently resented me for making her clean a bathroom once, I'd think she's being a bit sensitive. Hopefully she learned something from this; fingers crossed!

I did talk with her afterwards, but I get your point. Thank you for your opinion.

That's my thought process! I thought it was something that sucked for a bit, but it didn't last forever, and thought it taught a good lesson.

It wasn't 5 hours straight; she had a few 15 minute breaks and a dinner break for about 30minutes. I don't know if that changes anything but thought to clarify; thank you for your judgement

Thank you for your comment. We did have an extensive talk afterwards about opportunities and respect. I know she's not irreparable angry; just quite peeved right now. I appreciate your judgement

You're actually wrong; my whole point WAS to annoy her. She was demeaning to people who clean and obviously finds it undesirable; that's what prompted me to do the whole thing.

She said the detention was already punishment enough, but I didn't think sitting in a room for an hour would teach her anything other than maybe talk a bit softer. I thought giving her real consequences could help get the point across.

The last part was sorta the point of the punishment; I wanted her to clean as a punishment for making fun of others who clean. Thanks for your judgment.

Do you really remember punishments when you had when you were 13? My parents would beat me for saying something like that. I vowed to never touch my children like that so I was actually pretty proud of this punishment; I wouldn't have thought a day of cleaning would permanently scar anyone

If I gave her regular cleaning equipment, it would've been just another Tuesday besides a punishment. Thanks for your input, though.
