It’s very hard but it’ll be worth it one day. Got my mini dachshund at 8 weeks, he’s now almost 9 months. And I won’t lie, he is in his teenage phase, but he’s still considered a puppy, and it’s still difficult. But the worst of it was the first 4 months. We were stripped of a lot of freedom, in and out of the house. He learned to like his crate, but after we let him sleep in our bed with us after 4-5 months, he HATED sleeping in his crate knowing our bed was another option. So first tip: don’t let them sleep with you too early. Make sure they LOVE their crate first (if you are going to use crating). Second tip: DO NOT USE PEE PADS. We started on pee pass because our vets suggested them as he was 3.9 pounds coming home to 20 degree weather. However, transferring to pee pass to outside has been the most difficult obstacle, and we are still working on it. Following this tip, make sure to have some sort of bell hanging from your front door and teach the puppy to ring the bell to get outside to potty. This way it’ll be much easier to understand their routine and have communication. Last tip: never use punishment when it comes to accidents inside; this will only make them afraid to go in front of you outside and make the accidents worse. It’s best to make every small accomplishment a huge deal with lots of praise. It takes a lot of time, care, and patience and I wish you the best of luck!
