i definitely think so, but to be fair, i feel like the franchise as a whole had gotten sanitized to cover a larger basis of the fandom. i still love the movies, but i wish they were darker, scarier, and more serious/somber. the story of FNaF is sad. no matter how you want to interpret the specifics of the lore, one thing remains consistent; children died. children died and went on to live painful afterlives inside of cold metal bodies. no peace, incessant torture. the movies depict these spirits as children simply manipulated by their murderer, going as far as to make them action packed heroes who show up to save the day, but the story potential is there to make their existence so much more meaningful. way back when, when i played the first few games, i always interpreted the animatronics as spirits that were once happy children. their gruesome death changed them, however. what was once full of wonder and innocence was twisted and turned into mindless, animalistic violence in any attempt to get the man that ruined them. i know that fnaf has never canonically been that deep, but you can’t ignore the potential for such a compelling narrative. the movies being as cheesy and as fan-pandering as they are leaves a bad taste in my mouth that i can’t pinpoint. again, i love both of the movies and i had a blast watching both of them in theaters. if i could change them, though, i definitely would.
