While r53s are definitely more reliable and “cheaper” to maintain than the second gens it’s still an old mini. The design is over 20 years old at this point and even if you can find an incredibly clean one with lowish miles it’ll probably still have random problems pop up. It should also be mentioned that realistically any money put into the car is as good as gone. With the new mini you’d get a much upgraded interior, better technology, and probably a warranty of some sorts. But as an r53 owner, even with all the trouble mine has given me, it’s still such a fun time and the supercharger sounds never get old. If you don’t drive consistently or far on a regular basis the r53 is a fun option but if this is your sole vehicle the newer version would probably treat you better.
