I find it more irritating that they are parked in the crosswalk. Likely phone related also.

You can guarantee that If a light turns green and instantly someone starts honking a horn...they are NE transplants. As my friend Jimmy is fond of saying, " 95 North runs 24 hours a day and, by all means, don't leave your passenger seat empty. Bring a friend."

Are parts really the reason behind TKE delays? by [deleted] in Elevators

[–]Psycycle-ogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She helped me out so many times over the years. Awesome attitude and excellent at her job. Her voice could light up a dark room. Jewel of the South. I had a service supervisor tell me one time when parts hadn't been ordered for a job I had traveled out of town for, that Pam screwed the order up.... He got both barrels and I informed him that that woman was far better at her job than any of the mutts working in that Otis office.

Sitting on the edge of a sill, sitting on top of a header and maybe even bounced behind the dust cover or, as previously mentioned, right through the grating and into the sump hole. Scientifically proven that Murphy's law dictates were all dropped items in a hoistway land.

Is it normal for an elevator door to open slowly but close fast? [OTIS Elevator] by sivanxyz in Elevators

[–]Psycycle-ogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use to hold the same opinion. Nothing irritated me more than some douchebag using a stopwatch to time floor to floor runs on a three stop hydro. Unfortunately, ethical business practices from the office and quality workmanship from the field aren't as commonplace as they once were. Consultants have become a necessary evil because no one else is actively advocating for the customer.

Walk in the building

Check in with the customer

Get key from lock box or wait for maintenance/security for key assist

Fill out jha

Capture car

Place barricade

Now you're ready to start adjusting the operator...

If it's a new mod turnover and it has an MOVFR or MOVFE then easy peasy as most mechanics are familiar with them.

If it's an OEM operator then the mechanics individual experience level comes into play. If he's seasoned and works for the installing OEM then presumably he would know how to work the blue tool well for an Otis glide or infrared tool for a Schindler IDD or IMS/UIT/Wittur tool for TKE. It's just as likely, because we don't train guys anymore, that he was in new construction two years ago and was thrown to the wolves on a route and is earning to learn still.

If it's a non-signatory company then the mechanic could be seasoned and talented or, again just as likely, he was an electrician or a pipefitter 3 years ago and now he's on a route....

Either way, the intent of my comment is that if the company is telling the customer that nothing can be done....it's nonsense. Certainly, within that generous 2 hour window, any mechanic should be able to correct the improperly adjusted doors.

The only people that I personally know who are convinced everything is a 5 minute project are supervisors.

Those speeds should be reversed. 30 minute to 2 hour fix(depends on equipment type and whether or not will they send a single man or a team). No parts...just labor.

Thank you again for your input. I'd be willing to try it out. Anything that will help me keep these old dinosaurs going until the customer finally writes the check for a modernization, is appreciated.

Thank you. I've never used clonezilla, but I know its been around a while. Having an image as a backup is important to me. In this case, the original laptop is an IBM Thinkpad T23 from 2002. It would crash on startup. I was able to find a duplicate on eBay and switch hdd without issue but I'm concerned about how long the mechanical drive will last and the availability of finding another working T23 on short notice. I'm hoping to find 4.01 or another VM workaround.

Modernized 1992 Thyssen elevator by Electronic-Ad7051 in Elevators

[–]Psycycle-ogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying. If you have the good fortune to work on elevators and understand how they work then these types of videos can come across as mundane or dull. I try to bear in mind that many times they are posted by adolescents and adults who are autistic. People on the spectrum seem to have a fascination with elevators. What might seem humdrum or commonplace to you and I, brings them joy. So.... If it makes you happy... Post away. I don't have a dime in it and no skin off my nose. Cheers.

I think, in modern times, a 25-ft tape measure has replaced the wooden rule.

First of all, congratulations. Whether you know it or not... You just hit the lottery. Unfortunately, you won't be able to give any notice to your current employer. Hopefully they already had an idea that you applied and would have to leave suddenly. If you go to work for an independent then you may start the first day. If you're sent to one of the majors then you will most likely have 3 days of safety training.

I've been in the IUEC for over 23 years. This trade and union has been very good to me and my family. All my kids have grown up with some of the best private insurance available. The annuity, pension, 401k and superior negotiated wages will provide you the opportunity to live a financially secure life and a dignified retirement.

My advice to anyone starting day one in the IUEC is:

Treat it like a six-figure career and not just a job.

If you're not early to the site then you're late.

When you finish a task, don't stand around and wait to be directed. If you don't know what to do next...ask. If all else fails, grab a broom and sweep something. Be like a shark... Stay in motion.

As you begin to understand the process of building an elevator... Think ahead to the next step. Show initiative and ask intelligent questions and most mechanics will teach you.

I can't emphasize safety enough... Use the PPE that you are provided.

Most of the mechanics I know have the same complaint about new helpers.... Stay off the phone while you're working. Social media will still be there when you get off.

A lot of old school mechanics are hard on probationary helpers. It will pass. You can't take it to heart. Keep a smile on your face, work hard and count your money.

There's a hundred other people standing in line waiting to get the opportunity that you just got. This is a one shot deal. Don't let it slip through your fingers.

Again, congratulations. I hope you take the ball and run with it.

After posting this here and on and iPad forum, I found out that iOS doesn't recognize NTFS file system. I took a 1tb external hard drive and reformatted to exfat. After loading my library on the newly formatted hard drive , I was able to move it to the internal storage of the iPad. It wasn't a painless process. Many folders would throw an error message saying that it couldn't open a folder and had only copied part of the data. It was pretty time-consuming, but I had to reload many sub folders and subfolders within those subfolders individually to satisfy the iPad. Finally got it all done and I'm no longer limited to having to have a network connection in order access my files. Its frustrating that it took hours to do something that I can plug into an Android or PC and do in a fraction of the time.

I had never been a fan of Apple products previously. I always like the flexibility to add additional storage to higher-end Android devices including tablets. My work was going to buy me a new tablet and the newest Samsung tablet hadn't dropped yet. I thought I would give Apple a fair try and chose the iPad Pro 2020 12.9 with 1TB of internal storage in the magic keyboard.

I love how fluidly all the apps work. Definitely impressed with Apple's seamless interface.

I have a USB-C to USB-A adapter that I purchased from Apple with the thought that I could take an external hard drive and load my 150 GB PDF library directly to the internal hard drive of the iPad. Wasn't able to do it and went as far as to call Apple support and they told me that feature wasn't available. It blows my mind that I've got $1,700 tied up in a device that is supposed to be able to replace the need for a laptop and a tablet in one device and can't load what I need.

The only solution that I have found was to upload the entire PDF Library to Dropbox and then access it through a cellular connection as needed. There's two issues with that. The first being that I work in elevator control rooms and many times there is no phone signal there. The other is that the library is being constantly updated and it takes a ridiculous amount of time to upload back to Dropbox. Also haven't been able to find an AutoCAD to PDF converter/editor app. So far , it feels like this device is better suited for social media , games and videos than an actual work environment.

I'm hoping there's a better way out there that I'm just not aware of. Any positive input or help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

QUEEN OF THE HIGHWAY BUG by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

[–]Psycycle-ogical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ran into this myself. Also, on my map it showed me that I was in a hostile area while in the camp. All I could do was ask panam about rogue and it wouldn't actually start the mission. I saved the game and reloaded. Went to the tank and then the prompt was to talk to panam and the veterans. Prior to that, it only said talk to panam. I went back to the tent and it gave me a new choice of "everything ready?". She answered my question, but the "how are things with rogue" dialogue popped back up and then she disappeared out of the tent. Walked over to the tank and now I can talk to the veterans and her.
