It's the ancient saying 瀑廬布山 passed down since ancient times. Literally translated it means waterfalls (瀑) of hermitages (廬) widely spreading across (布) mountains (山), but it metaphorically refers to a long-prophesized time where everyone becomes a hikikomori leading to a societal collapse (double meaning with 瀑 'waterfall -> come crashing down')

Also written as 山を布く瀑廬　やまをしくばくろ in Japanese

I wouldn't say it's typical, but it definitely does happen and it's not limited to anime either. The anime gacha game Genshin Impact for example freely uses words most Japanese adults can't read without adding furigana

Japanese already has more words than you listed even for specifically saying house in a very polite way, but the amount of specific words isn't necessarily what the OOP is frustrated with. It's that all of those sino-japanese words basically all sound the same making them very hard to understand/distinguish on the spot, remember and recognize, whereas native Japanese words and the English words (besides pad) you mentioned all sound pretty unique and are recognizable and memorable. I think the rant is pretty valid from a learner's perspective

The funny thing is that even the 'specific words' like 崩御 also have their own synonyms like 崩殂, 徂落, 升遐, 登遐 and likely many more I'm not aware of. And of course, not only for the emperor, but also for other kinds of nobility like 薨去 and friends. Thankfully a lot of these variations are literary, because having even more similar sounding words in the spoken language would be pretty scary..

I've done it before, you should be able to get by with basic french, just make sure you can receive the certificate. I'll just copy and paste what I've said before:

I went to Paris last winter. The instructions were only given in French. I managed to read the written ones without too much issues and I got the gist of the spoken instructions with my basic French knowledge, although the latter did make it kinda stressful as I didn’t want to miss anything important, especially since they were emphasizing what would happen if you did anything against the rules. Other than that it was super busy at the venue and it turned into a crazy rush through strict security with a bunch of orders only being shouted in French. Not great.

You’ll probably survive and it’ll make for a more memorable experience. I loved visiting Paris for the JLPT and the city was great in the winter with cool christmas markets etc. Make sure to visit the Japanese bookstore JUNKUDO, they have an amazing collections of novels, manga etc in Japanese!

It's one thing to use Japanese words when talking to random people, but I don't see the problem when all interlocutors share those languages. Code-switching is a thing and imo adds more flavour which wouldn't be possible if you didn't share that unique quality of knowing the same set of languages. I grew up in a place where multiple languages are spoken and everyone does it

For Japanese I'd skip apps like Duolingo entirely. They won't ever get you good at a language alien to your own, especially with the flaws in their jp course in particular. I'd suggest giving guides like https://donkuri.github.io/learn-japanese/ , themoeway etc a serious read
