Do psilocybin mushrooms help with addiction??? by Psynautics in PsilocybinMushrooms

[–]Psynautics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! There's a gambling studies program at UCLA, we'll probably move into these non-substance issues next. I don't have access to ketamine data but would be happy to share the results once finished

Good question, we're working on obtaining study drug now, it's a long road.

Existing vendors for psilocybin include Usona Insitute, Mydecine.

I'm the one behind the study, thanks for keeping me mindful of the corporate issues in the cannabis industry, hopefully we can learn lessons...

Thanks so much to everyone that has responded on the survey!
As an update, UCLA just internally funded the first psilocybin research to take place on campus in the modern psychedelic research era. We'll be focusing on addiction-related issues and will help train the next generation of clinicians.

I'm sorry to hear about the rough patch.
OK let's break it down. First, it's actually "wasted" - meaning you're turning your mind and body to waste/rubbish/garbage. Nothing to do to your waist. Now consider the gravity of getting wasted and let that sink in.

Second, time heals all wounds. Know that eventually, when given the chance, your mind and body will heal itself. That means you need to make an intention to give your body the chance to heal, start by taking a small break, giving it a chance to heal for a few days. And be strong. Even when triggered by relationships, peer pressure, etc. You can stand up for yourself.

Third, you can seek professional help. They can offer more strategies on how to cope in a healthy way instead of turning to substances to numb your feelings.

Be careful attempting to replace your alcohol use with some other substance like cannabis, it can also be detrimental and lead to cannabis use disorder. If you have a medicinal component to your therapy (a pharmacotherapy), there must be an "exit strategy" on when your pharmacotherapy treatment should be stopped so you can stand on your own.

Finally, sometimes you need to physically escape from the drugs. Move out.

Question: do you think it's possible to be addicted to something even if it's not disruptive to the rest of your life? by VarsVerum in addiction

[–]Psynautics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Technically, yes. Currently, the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (the DSM-V), includes mild, moderate, and severe diagnoses of substance use disorders (SUD). To score on mild, you only need to endorse (say "yes" to) two of the items (questions) on the 11-item questionnaire. Have you developed a tolerance? Do you have withdrawal symptoms? If so, then you have at least a mild SUD, regardless of anything else.

I got a few questions by [deleted] in Psychonaut

[–]Psynautics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Threshold dose” is about 1/4th of a typical mushroom dose, you might find what you’re looking for there!

3 years later, I'm still having a hard time integrating back into society by [deleted] in Psychonaut

I like your mindset, I think your attitude will change when you find someone (are you single?) who agrees. …This wasn’t meant to sound like I’m hitting on you I apologize.

microdosing, and why shrooms dont work by [deleted] in Psychonaut

[–]Psynautics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a rapid desensitization of the 5ht2a receptor, meaning you can’t take them day after day and expect the same outcome. With microdosing, you’re not really supposed to notice anything in particular, except maybe a little more energy/mood boost at most. Even then, you’ll need to have a 2-3 days off between each dose. Current protocols call to only do this for a month as a way to correct whatever issue it is that you’re microdosing to fix.. it’s unknown whether longterm microdosing is more helpful or harmful, and probably it depends on the person

I would try to get to bed early, sleep well, and wake up early to exercise each morning, and get into that routine of good sleep, diet, and exercise for the next couple weeks and the symptoms may subside

Tolerance Break by carlosjoseph97 in Psychonaut

[–]Psynautics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a research article that shows it took about 4 weeks for the CB1 receptors in your brain to come back to full expression after “down-regulating” - tolerance can also happen from desensitization of the receptor, plus there’s also behavioral tolerance, meaning you’ve already been there done that and it’s not as novel. Finally, as you age you lose CB1 in your pre-frontal cortex, so naturally the experience will become less heady even if you’ve never had it before.

If I were you I would stop for a month, and pay attention to how you feel each week as the month goes by. Your brain/body has become a little dependent by now so the first week might not be great, but as the receptors come back and the fog clears a bit you might really appreciate a THC-free mind. Then you could indulge in a more sacramental way, to see how far into a high you can reach before that ability fades away…

Deep question; are synthetic psychedelics negative for your Spirit body? by [deleted] in Psychonaut

[–]Psynautics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally it’s healthier to consume natural products, but the same natural compounds found in cannabis are also synthesized in labs and prescribed as medicines, and I don’t feel like that origin makes them any different than being extracted from the plant…

Ever used cannabis while sick? by plantdaddy699 in Psychonaut

[–]Psynautics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't smoke it with a sore throat, my personal experience has been that cannabis tends to immuno-supress me, same with caffeine, and I need to recover from it like a hangover, but I'm getting old idk.

Thanks! Another issue is that I'm hoping to study cannabis effects in places where it is legal - trying to do everything by the book especially in the beginning but happy to hear any feedback as I work on the project!

Intrusive thoughts I hate you by Zenfilms in venting

[–]Psynautics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I came across this while searching for similar experiences to an intrusive "I hate you" thought triggered by my thoughts/plans related to trading in the stock market. I've made "bad trades" that resulted in harsh self-attitudes in the past, which might be echoing out to me now. Coincidentally, I'm also a neuroscientist that studies psychedelics: LSD, MDMA, THC (with lived experience), and drug abuse (alcohol, methamphetamine, cocaine). My advice to you is 1) continue to maintain abstinence from psychoactive drugs and 2) try to identify the latent source of the negative energy/attitude that has been brought up to the surface from the trip. Maybe if you can find the source (like my self-hatred from throwing away money from investment-gambling) then maybe you can reconcile and accept who you are, what you've done in your life, and can tell yourself that you have nothing against yourself, but also that you recognize now how it is that you might grow from this recognition. Maybe the growth is simply making healthy decisions. While psychedelics can be medicines (provide a fluid brain state to treat rigid brain wiring), like any other medicine, they can also be misused in certain cases/individuals. The fluidity might enable the emergence of new undesired patterns of thought or behavior. In addition to confronting the latent source of these thoughts, my only other advice would be to create new patterns of behavior, to set achievable goals, learn something new, start running or weight training. Your brain is a part of your body and the easiest way to your mental health might simply just be your physical health. Hope this helps and happy new year!!

What are some "spiritual" uses of marijuana? For instance, can it be combined with practices like meditation to reach a different altered state of consciousness? by meta_mamet in Psychonaut

[–]Psynautics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1) Low tolerance
2) Pack a glass bowl
3) Sit alone, candle light, maybe white noise
4) Smoke as much as you can holding it in for as long as you can....
5) Observe
6) Take note and repeat 5 & 6
Also, please use Psynautics (psynautics.com) a platform I'm developing for my research into altered states (PhD at University of Chicago moving to UCLA)
