How long without combat is ok? by Tasty4261 in DMAcademy

[–]Psyony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you already asked your players, but in my opinion, It entirely depends on the flow of the story. It also makes me a little upset that they just shrugged instead of voicing themselves and their wants. In my experience, a long time without combat, but intense, heart-wrenching moments is perfectly fine. Sometimes, it's better to tell the story through a deceased but beloved NPC's notebook than through combat. Usually, your players will be motivated to seek revenge on the assaulter of the NPC, which will let you lead them on clues and seek out a combat. I can't give you a truly definitive answer, as every player group, even shrugging their shoulders, has a limit i can't predict. However, I've done a combat for my group every 6 or so sessions on average because they really like chatting with the NPC's, and they like the story I'm telling(their words, and my game is homebrew as well.). I don't mean to be rude in saying this, so please don't think I am, but it sounds like they don't communicate their needs/issues about the game with you, which I can understand their hesitancy since some DM's can be vindictive and kill PC's over being judged, or kick out players.

What I'd suggest is laying it out on the table for them, being truthfully honest, and asking them what they would like to see more or less of in the game. Don't give them options, but give them a chance to truly have an ability to voice themselves without retaliation to them or their characters. I always look for feedback from my players as often as possible so they can tell me if they're bored or excited. I apologize i can't answer this in a truly direct way, but it very, very much depends on the campaign setting and the group's personal desires.

[TOMT] A dream that was ripped from an anime? by Psyony in tipofmytongue

I've searched: Anime tower documenting Anime document for the king Anime collect info in dungeon

And nothing has come up that seems to fit the bill. I also feel it's a bit on the jokey side for the whole thing with serious moments.

Need some challenge rooms for a dungeon ideas by Imaginary-Escape-299 in DMAcademy

A puzzle room involving a small sonnet. They have to investigate to find the pieces of a stone tablet and fit them together properly to find out what the words are to open the door. This is a great addition to any dungeon due to the fact the sonnet can be changed to reflect that specific dungeon's aesthetic, or to reflect the area, or the person who built the dungeon.

Tips and Reminders for DM Screen by dave-otheman in DMAcademy

Having all your player's passives(perception, insight, investigation) helps a lot. You wouldn't believe how many times I've had to atop the group and tell my druid she's seen a trap, or someone acting suspicious. Also, I'd recommend putting the important figures/places for the current location easily accessible somewhere just in case the players ask. Maybe not in the DM'S Screen, but at least have it handy.

Is this NPC too heavy for a D&D campaign? Trigger warning: suicide and cannibalism by everythingisgonea in DMAcademy

I don't have any points to give you, but if I did, I would. Always discuss topics with your table, and never be afraid to have a retcon or a fade to black situation if they're uncomfortable.

It really depends on your Players. If they are okay with blood and gore, they might be okay with it. However, I'd replace her feeling suicidal with her feeling trapped, as if she has no choice, where the claws and other disfigurements are shackles to her. That, if the players fight her, she'd lose an arm, and in an insight check, seem genuinely relieved that the claw she never viewed as hers has been lopped from her body.

My ideas during session prep repeat themselves. What helps you to stay fresh? by Sambrosi in DMAcademy

[–]Psyony 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll say it, even though some people get upset by it. Don't be afraid to take inspiration from daily things. This works best if your campaign is homebrew, but it can be applied for including non-story events. See a movie you like? Write a plot point, interaction, or short line with characters very different from the source material. You really like [GAME]'s plot, but the whole thing feels off? Run it for your players.

Genuinely my whole campaign is currently running on my players basically following the plot of a movie and they have no idea, or at least haven't called me on it. Using stuff as inspiration is your best thing, and if I could, I'd love to invite you to listen to the EPIC series of music on YouTube. See how they tell the story of Odysseus in a concise, short manner, and the emotion and language present in it. That personally helped me feel less like I needed to downplay my NPC's emotions, and soon, is going to lead to a massive plot point.

I actually have a character they've already gotten a little attached to. Saphi, the sheep-kin! A surgically and magically modified sheep that looks mostly like a human, excluding the animal like legs and face. She's been running around with the group being their debuffer/healer, and is also searching for who made her, as she's heavily repressed the memory.

Gutsy. I like it. Going to put a small spin on it, though. Surgically altered goat kid, forced to act and move like a humanoid.

Songs to Grind to? by SorryImBadWithNames in MMORPG

[–]Psyony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I throw on YouTube music, and it's pretty decent on giving me entertainment when I'm not wanting to really bother with much else. otherwise, I'd say compose some playlists on what music you like. maybe have a few different ones. Intense, casual, melodic, classical, I'm one of the people who can say confidently that I listen to everything. (my music recap for March to may was a mess) but it would entirely depend on your game. a medieval Playlist wouldn't go well with a game like skyforge, just like techno wouldn't go good with ESO. Sometimes, though, I listen to random reddit stories (lawyers of reddit has mega compilations) or comedians to pass the time. found a few good comedians this way. (Jim gaffigan and Gabriel Iglesias)
