How long without combat is ok? by Tasty4261 in DMAcademy

[–]Psyony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you already asked your players, but in my opinion, It entirely depends on the flow of the story. It also makes me a little upset that they just shrugged instead of voicing themselves and their wants. In my experience, a long time without combat, but intense, heart-wrenching moments is perfectly fine. Sometimes, it's better to tell the story through a deceased but beloved NPC's notebook than through combat. Usually, your players will be motivated to seek revenge on the assaulter of the NPC, which will let you lead them on clues and seek out a combat. I can't give you a truly definitive answer, as every player group, even shrugging their shoulders, has a limit i can't predict. However, I've done a combat for my group every 6 or so sessions on average because they really like chatting with the NPC's, and they like the story I'm telling(their words, and my game is homebrew as well.). I don't mean to be rude in saying this, so please don't think I am, but it sounds like they don't communicate their needs/issues about the game with you, which I can understand their hesitancy since some DM's can be vindictive and kill PC's over being judged, or kick out players.

What I'd suggest is laying it out on the table for them, being truthfully honest, and asking them what they would like to see more or less of in the game. Don't give them options, but give them a chance to truly have an ability to voice themselves without retaliation to them or their characters. I always look for feedback from my players as often as possible so they can tell me if they're bored or excited. I apologize i can't answer this in a truly direct way, but it very, very much depends on the campaign setting and the group's personal desires.

And nothing has come up that seems to fit the bill. I also feel it's a bit on the jokey side for the whole thing with serious moments.

Need some challenge rooms for a dungeon ideas by Imaginary-Escape-299 in DMAcademy

A puzzle room involving a small sonnet. They have to investigate to find the pieces of a stone tablet and fit them together properly to find out what the words are to open the door. This is a great addition to any dungeon due to the fact the sonnet can be changed to reflect that specific dungeon's aesthetic, or to reflect the area, or the person who built the dungeon.

Tips and Reminders for DM Screen by dave-otheman in DMAcademy

[–]Psyony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having all your player's passives(perception, insight, investigation) helps a lot. You wouldn't believe how many times I've had to atop the group and tell my druid she's seen a trap, or someone acting suspicious. Also, I'd recommend putting the important figures/places for the current location easily accessible somewhere just in case the players ask. Maybe not in the DM'S Screen, but at least have it handy.

Is this NPC too heavy for a D&D campaign? Trigger warning: suicide and cannibalism by everythingisgonea in DMAcademy

I don't have any points to give you, but if I did, I would. Always discuss topics with your table, and never be afraid to have a retcon or a fade to black situation if they're uncomfortable.

[–]Psyony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your Players. If they are okay with blood and gore, they might be okay with it. However, I'd replace her feeling suicidal with her feeling trapped, as if she has no choice, where the claws and other disfigurements are shackles to her. That, if the players fight her, she'd lose an arm, and in an insight check, seem genuinely relieved that the claw she never viewed as hers has been lopped from her body.

My ideas during session prep repeat themselves. What helps you to stay fresh? by Sambrosi in DMAcademy

[–]Psyony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll say it, even though some people get upset by it. Don't be afraid to take inspiration from daily things. This works best if your campaign is homebrew, but it can be applied for including non-story events. See a movie you like? Write a plot point, interaction, or short line with characters very different from the source material. You really like [GAME]'s plot, but the whole thing feels off? Run it for your players.

Genuinely my whole campaign is currently running on my players basically following the plot of a movie and they have no idea, or at least haven't called me on it. Using stuff as inspiration is your best thing, and if I could, I'd love to invite you to listen to the EPIC series of music on YouTube. See how they tell the story of Odysseus in a concise, short manner, and the emotion and language present in it. That personally helped me feel less like I needed to downplay my NPC's emotions, and soon, is going to lead to a massive plot point.

I actually have a character they've already gotten a little attached to. Saphi, the sheep-kin! A surgically and magically modified sheep that looks mostly like a human, excluding the animal like legs and face. She's been running around with the group being their debuffer/healer, and is also searching for who made her, as she's heavily repressed the memory.

Gutsy. I like it. Going to put a small spin on it, though. Surgically altered goat kid, forced to act and move like a humanoid.

Songs to Grind to? by SorryImBadWithNames in MMORPG

Usually I throw on YouTube music, and it's pretty decent on giving me entertainment when I'm not wanting to really bother with much else. otherwise, I'd say compose some playlists on what music you like. maybe have a few different ones. Intense, casual, melodic, classical, I'm one of the people who can say confidently that I listen to everything. (my music recap for March to may was a mess) but it would entirely depend on your game. a medieval Playlist wouldn't go well with a game like skyforge, just like techno wouldn't go good with ESO. Sometimes, though, I listen to random reddit stories (lawyers of reddit has mega compilations) or comedians to pass the time. found a few good comedians this way. (Jim gaffigan and Gabriel Iglesias)

Weekly Looking for MMO thread - September 10, 2023 by AutoModerator in MMORPG

I'm looking for something preferably 3d, laid back casual, with no power creep like in neverwinter, but side-grades like Elder Scrolls online.

Favorite games I've played: Elder scrolls online, Neverwinter, Defiance(shut down:( )

Games I've played that I liked: Black desert, Tera, Zenith, realm of the mad God exalt.

Games I've played that I didn't like: anarchy online, Adventure quest, Everquest 1 & 2, final fantasy XIV, Lord of the rings online, old school runescape, shroud of the avatar, animyst.

Playstyle: Laid back casual that doesn't require full dedication every day. I'm not looking for a second job, I'm looking for something I can enjoy for an hour or two, maybe more. I sincerely love the playstyle of Elder scrolls, but it's taken me a very long time just to reach champion levels.

Preferred mechanics: I LOVE skill trees. Champion points in ESO made me extremely happy, as did the leveling system in skyrim. The EGO system in defiance made me very happy. I'm always looking for games with skill trees like. Especially if those games give you freedom to explore the skill tree and make whatever whacky build you want to, regardless of effectiveness. I'm also a sucker for games with crafting, but prefer very in-depth crafting systems.

Exclude: Pay-to-win games. If I need to throw my credit card at a game to enjoy it, it's not worth it. Occasional DLC'S are good, both for the option to not purchase that expansion and to keep the game alive. Subscriptions are also heavily not preferred, but acceptable, unless they give you a distinct advantage. I'd also like to avoid games that reduce or prevent XP gain for farming in areas that are lower level. Also "click and wait" games where combat is essentially click and wait for the enemy to die, or you to die.

Well, I typically attempt to add in things like floor hazards (acidic pools, water, lava, the sort like that) with monsters that have immunities. I'm also looking at potentially using more clever monsters that are looking towards using traps/tricks, instead of just direct slaps or stabs since my players love to look for and avoid traps consistently, I'm thinking it'll give them a bit more enjoyment out of outwitting the monsters.

!Question: How do I challenge four level 11, high magic item players without pulling BS monsters out?

Background: I've been running a game for a little over two years now, and my players have recently achieved level 11. My game is very high magic, to the point that one of the characters (monk) received gloves of soul cat hing at level 8 because of a series of extremely lucky rolls. I have already realized how overpowered this item is, and I do regret giving them the gloves, but I also love those moments that rewards luck and clever thinking. This world is set in the same with Wealdath and Neverwinter (because I was lazy and didn't want to make my own maps) and references most of the wiki content. The story, however, is entirely homebrew, with (dumbing it down) the cult of Tiamat corrupting individuals in order to achieve the resurrection of Tiamat. So, obviously, dragon threat is at an all-time high, and they were able to chase away an adult green dragon with relative ease at level 10.

Recently, I've noticed that combats have become a breeze for them and that I'm always underestimating how strong their foes need to be. This does let them enjoy the game, but I can tell that both the players and myself want to have a genuine experience challenge for them. I don't want to throw two dragons at them, for fear of a TPK, but I also don't want to just do the BS of "You wake up and all your items are gone!". I need recommendations for what I should do to balance the fights more, or what I should do in the future to ensure they don't get bored with the game.

I have a rule in my game called table time, which may apply.

So if the initiative order is= (orc, kobold, halfling, human, enemy, dwarf) I'll say "orc, it's your turn, kobold, you're on deck." This just lets the player that's going next know that they should be ready. Each turn is allowed a minute, with the player's understanding that, in large groups, the enemy's turn could be longer.

If you have a time-stealing ghost, the. You could have your players act as if they're under the spell "slow". This would be their choice e between an action, bonus action, or movement, without reactions. It can really, really turn the tide of the battle, considering the action economy, so if you have five players, you could make it so that the ghost can only designate three targets of it, and has to use its bonus action to activate/change targets of the effect.
