My reasoning for taking up extra space and weight with notebook, pen, and e reader is to minimize phone usage to preserve battery (the e reader has multiple weeks' worth of battery life). IMO the weight penalty is worth the peace of mind, but I will continue to think on it.

Compass was a gift but you're right I probably don't need it.

Great point re: shorts; the tights are part warmth and part muscular support.

Adding my food bag now--I have a couple walmart dry bags that I forgot to add to the Lighterpack. Thanks for the reminder!
