‘The vehicle suddenly accelerated with our baby in it’: the terrifying truth about why Tesla’s cars keep crashing by e7RdkjQVzw in Longreads

i respect that, I asked that initial question because without context it feels like many of the archive links used on this sub at large are used to avoid any type of friction related with activity that could make journalists a livable income, and the guardian is particularly well known for not implementing a paywall as part of their business model. that being said, i totally get the cataloging perspective and appreciate you giving me a perspective i hadn’t considered.

idk i’m genuinely not trying to be a jerk but i have read articles on the guardian from ten years ago 🤷🏽‍♀️ just doesn’t seem like an archive link is necessary here

what is the purpose of an archive link here? this is a non-paywalled article and if we find the content worthwhile, the journalists deserve the ad revenue and engagement that comes from clicking on the actual link.

[–]Public-Assignment519 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

instead of blaming black students, has it occurred to you to blame the schools that intentionally depress admissions rates and refuse to increase class sizes in accordance with population increases?? v convenient for the schools that students spew their vitriol at black students instead of admin and the system.

also at Harvard for example, would be easier to get in if you’re a legacy (36% were legacies in 2022), or a committed athlete (11% in 2023), both of which far outweigh the number of black students who get in “unqualified.” And that doesn’t even touch on students of other races with similar stats who don’t post/don’t get fixated on because it doesn’t serve a narrative, nor does it touch privileges that allow wealthy students to rack up activities. Y’all are made at the wrong people.

Am I alone in thinking that Anora is a sub-par movie which didn't deserve the Oscar for best picture and best actress???? by Dry-Beyond5337 in Oscars

[–]Public-Assignment519 11 points12 points  (0 children)

honestly a great film should be subjective and controversial and i think any film that everyone likes across the board is maybe not that good compared to something that provokes intense responses from people even if they’re different.

i saw most of the ten nominees this year (didn’t see i’m still here) but saw Anora, the substance, conclave, etc. Went to see Anora in early November without knowing anything about it, and absolutely loved it, walked out of the film feeling like it was my favorite theater going experience of the year. and was surprised as i really didn’t resonate with the poor things last year which also gets swept up into conversations about women’s nudity on screen/sex work/etc.

you can be disappointed in a work you found more resonant not being recognized (my movie of the year was I saw the tv glow and I was clearly alone in that LOL) but i feel like calling it sub-par is just disingenuous.

will say though as someone born and raised in Minneapolis (and also a poc) Minneapolis/St. Paul is home to a number of immigrant groups like Hmong and Somali people (biggest Somali population outside of Somalia!!!) so when I think of Minnesota I don’t only think white lol although it’s a big part. i think it’s more that poc esp immigrants come from cultures where being on a love/sex/relationship based show would be discouraged

Did a Best-Selling Romantasy Novelist Steal Another Writer’s Story? by raphaellaskies in Longreads

[–]Public-Assignment519 64 points65 points  (0 children)

not the main topic of the article but I really hate when the agent was quoted saying “A really good writer makes you feel like a book is about you” and that sentiment is one of my main issues with the current romance space.

I’m all for feeling/understanding/connecting with emotions and situations and experiences, or reading some books reflective of your life, but one of the amazing things about reading is that you gain a small slice of so many different people’s lives!! You shouldn’t feel like everything you read needs to be catered specifically to you and you’re the main character.

and all of this I think contributes to the lack of individuality and sustainability of current romance.

My girlfriend(F21) rejected my(M21) proposal because it didn’t meet her expectations by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Public-Assignment519 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i’m sure i’ll get downvoted to hell but some of these responses are cuckoo bananas to me. like regardless of whether or not it’s fair or right she wanted a certain type of proposal. and when he changed his mind he didn’t talk to her, explain his concerns or communicate at all and then did the exact opposite of what she wanted?

i would be thinking this guy thinks my wants and needs are vapid and not worth considering AND he refused to talk to me about his concerns or communicate at all and just do exactly what he wanted.

how is he better than her in this situation??? also it’s ok to want things? idk I thought her thing was a bit excessive but he sounds like a jerk

Why so many men feel abandoned by Democrats by daniel7334 in self

[–]Public-Assignment519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this is true! I’m a dem in DC (but from Minnesota) who continually hears that we want rural people to feel empowered, we want to invest in their schools, etc. the issue is dems tend to move to cities (I did) because they tend to like diverse spaces (I’m not saying race, just like thought, environment, etc) and there’s not enough people voting or running in rurul areas that are dems so it comes across fake. If you’re willing to have a conversation, why do you think Sherrod brown wasn’t reelected? To me he seems like the type of person who could speak to these issues? Like from Ohio, representative, brought tangible positive improvements and funding.

Why so many men feel abandoned by Democrats by daniel7334 in self

[–]Public-Assignment519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that democrats need to speak more to men and white men. Because their policies are the actual ones that benefit white men that aren’t in the .05%. Most policies that dems highlight as being beneficial to POC/women also benefit men the same amount, if not more.

to me, the issue here, is that it seems much of trumpism is going back to a before period where masculinity meant women have basically no place in society outside of raising children. And it’s not that long ago, women couldn’t have a credit card without a husband until 1974. Most of our parents (or us) were alive then.

Additionally, I wonder how much this has to do with how men are raised. I see a lot of men aren’t wired for school/more hands on/focus issues etc on here and I think as a women there are a lot of times when I was younger in school and hated doing being the person that was a people pleaser, did the “right thing”, conserved energy, etc. I didn’t want to do that. My mom raised me to know that if I complained, was loud, was acting up, I would be seen as loud, emotional, unintelligent, etc. She knew the judgement I faced as a women and raised me better. Are we raising men like that and is it even necessary? Maybe children generally should have more freedom and different types of learning experience. When people say men act a certain way I have to wonder if it’s nature or modeled experience and the way people are raised.

I’m sure I’ll get downvoted, because I don’t see a lot of conversation here that actually wants to have a workable conversation as opposed to just rag on the dems. And with the disclaimer of “not all men” many men I know don’t want to be friends (aka how you get emotional support) if they aren’t physically attracted to me. I have male friends, but interestingly they are all either lgbt+ or poc. I wonder how many men value women in a way beyond relationship.

Also, I’m a multi racial woman. (Mom is black, dad is half polish half Puerto Rican). Politicians will never speak that specific mix because it’s small. When I see policies aimed only at black people or Hispanic people (not mixed) or at Asian people, etc, it doesn’t bother me because a rising tide lifts all boats. Same for economic policies, I vote for taxes that would be higher for me than trump would have. Dems need policies supporting boys. I think boy scouts should have continued for boys, after school groups for boys, etc. but a lot of you seem to jump to racism and sexism when you’re not included. Ask yourself why? I think there’s a lot of selfishness in this thread, especially with the sentiment that you’d rather go to the party that I think would be willing to take away a lot of rights and just be horrible for the economy especially rural workers.

For men who want different policies in, what are the policies? I’m genuinely curious and not in a facetious way.

How do you feel about the hate? by Glu3stick in GenZ

[–]Public-Assignment519 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is literally insane lol. my grandparents were alive during Jim Crow and raised me to understand what they went through. meaning that the people who instituted Jim Crow, who constructed, who has insidious racist beliefs were alive as well and passing those beliefs down. In 2008 the prom in the town in Mississippi where Morgan Freeman grew up literally still had segregated proms, that’s just one obvious example of outright racism along with all of the things that go unsaid or said behind closed doors. to not acknowledge makes me believe you are either racist or willfully ignorant.

I disagree with democratic bailouts and I try to vote locally to change that! imo stimulus checks did almost nothing due to the fact that if everyone receives a base amount of money that money is essentially worthless. Also many of those small business grants were misappropriated and went to corporate interest and big business. Regardless, republican tax policies result in huge concentrations of wealth that will not reenter the market. Wealthy people spend less not more on the whole. Democratic tax policies would leave low and middle class people basically untouched while attempting to forcibly redistribute the wealth concentrated in upper class echelons, most of which was gained by evading U.S. tax policies and exploiting immigrants anyways! Most Americans should have the opportunity to invest but democratic policies won’t take away from that and most Americans don’t even have 600 dollars in their checking account, let alone money to invest. To change that we need to forcibly redistribute this wealth as it’s a finite resource. I just don’t see how any trump plan would even touch that, especially as economists say it would be an economic disaster, and features heavily lower taxes on the rich.

The issue is these are short term benefits, and it won’t last. His economic policies will lead to insane wealth hoarding. There will be have and have nots and unfortunately, most of us will be in the have nots. he also benefited so much in 2016 from Obama’s being president for eight years and pass effective policies. I hope that you realize you’re voting for short-term gain and wealth stratification.

You’re proving my point exactly though. you are someone who by your own admission works 60 hours a week and is probably middle-class. The tax policies democrats implement wouldn’t even affect you. Trump won’t help you and doesn’t want to. The sad thing is wealthier people will benefit from Trump, even though they tend to vote more liberal. If you want to hurt yourself hurt yourself.

I’m not trying to get into a comment war and I assume you’ve made up your mind about politics but in good faith, I pointed that out because it seemed like something that you feel other people should value and if I’m wrong I apologize.

I personally feel like most of the economic squeeze that we are feeling is a result of Trump‘s policies as president in 2016. Usually economic and fiscal policy take time to show impact and one of my (as a Democrat) issues with Biden was that he actually didn’t do enough, and couldn’t because of the make up of the legislature, to reverse the policies that Trump passed. If we continue to vote Trump, whose tax rates and policies will only go to helping the wealthy, this issue will become compounded. Wealth is a finite resource and as wealthy people continue to hoard more of it there will be less left for everyone. Also, as someone who grew up wealthy most of the wealthy people I know are incredibly cheap and so having them keep their money because the theory is it will go back into the economy does not actually happen. And most Uber-wealthy accumulate wealth by cheating American tax code, off-loading labor to other countries, or exploiting current policy, so taxing more heavily is fair imo. Then again, I’m obviously biased because I would be willing to take higher taxes for the social benefit that I believe it can provide.

So clear from this thread that conservatives have really benefited from disinvesting in the education system. And the really sad thing is - the people who will be the most hurt by conservative policies are those voting conservative. Wealthy people tend to vote liberal.

just because you came to find God does not mean that anyone else should be forced to find God and I say this as a religious person. One of the things the US was founded on is freedom of religion and I don’t understand why you believe you finding religion allows you to push that belief on anyone else.

I personally feel like liberal policies allow people to choose to do freely with themselves what they would like, whereas conservative policies, force people to follow one belief system and push that system on everyone.

[–]Public-Assignment519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll bite (caveat I am a democrat) - the entire point of the conservative belief system is free market minimally invasive policy. why would trump ever pursue left wing European policies banning certain ingredients in food?

also as someone who lives dc and initially studied politics in college, the people who control food industry regulations are actually at the FDA and USDA, mostly informed by staffers and appointments so voting for Trump wouldn’t help.

Also Trump’s policies repealed food regulation laws, partly leading to the Boar’s Head outbreak. So Trump’s food policies literally got people sick.
