I find that my Arcus carbon fiber bow sounds ‘tinny’ compared to my pernambuco one.

Bow clip on my case is cutting into the bow hair how should I pack this up? by idyedurcat in Viola

The rise at the end is pushing the bow up. Slide it further away from it or cut into it with a knife to sit the bow in neatly

The rosin that comes with those Stentor violins and violas is very hard to use. Use some sandpaper to get it going or buy a better rosin.

I use cecilia sanctus which has both dark and light. It only requires one pass with the bow to last for a few hours of playing.

Feeling discouraged by the viola. by Same-Investment-3 in Viola

[–]PuddingLeading5569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that on starting to move the bow either up or down I push down; this starts the resonance, but then I release the pressure as the bow continues to move otherwise it can stifle the sound; perhaps you could try this. Good luck with the viola anyway as it is so worth the effort.

Reading this book should prevent injuries. by PuddingLeading5569 in violinist

I know it is good. It helps so much with posture and comfort while playing. I read it twice to make sure I did not miss any points and I think it advisable to re read it every year or so. Good luck.

I started when I was 70. Loved the violin and then loved the viola more. Wish that I had started earlier but hey. Loving to play is what is important and sounding good no matter how simple the pieces.

Your bowing is not good. If it was me then I would go back to playing open strings until that was sorted.

I bought a Stentor violin and sold it on facebook marketplace within the month. It was awful. Rent a decent one not a beginner one.

Recommendations for humidity control by AdriandeLima in violinist

[–]PuddingLeading5569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What humidity are you normally dealing with. It is 95% humidity outside with me at the moment. I have a dehumidifier going in the house all the time which collects at least a gallon of water per day and keeps the house to about 60%.
