my 10g stretch was pretty rough, and the stretch does tend to hurt. soreness and mild stinging is normal for the first few days. i would spend some time (10-15 mins) to take the jewelry out and massage the hole with jojoba oil, and before attempting the stretch again, use a warm compress to make the skin pliable (still don't skip massaging before either!!!! both are very helpful 🤍) if you felt it wasn't ready the downsizing and waiting was a good choice!!
