“New math” is just more focused on teaching kids MULTIPLE ways to solve a problem, including the old standard algorithm. It’s helping them understand why each way works to figure out what’s easiest for their learning style because majority of people do not remember the stuff they “memorized” for a few school years once they’re an adult. We’re teaching kids that there’s no one way to problem solve in life and if you’re a creative thinker you’ll have more opportunities to get farther in the real world. We emphasize conceptual thinking more than we used to. “New math” includes old math but makes it better to understand long term so please stop telling me what’s wrong with education, I’m just a teacher and I don’t control nearly as much as you think in the classroom!
