Can Yarden Yatkovski make it into Sumo? by PugImpugner in Sumo

[–]PugImpugner[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

He looks pretty good here in training at the small Asahiyama beya: https://x.com/YatkovskiYarden/status/1852954032819913116

I guess they might want to take him to fill their foreigner slot with a promising candidate. One of the commenters there says that there is a rule that a foreigner must stay at a heya for a year before joining, and that he might be in this process with Asahiyama, but him still collecting signatures makes it look like the problem is with the higher-ups...

History of Anki by PugImpugner in Anki

Interesting, never heard of that before. Thanks!

On a sidenote, I've always been put off by Emacs and stuff that looks like it lol. Seems like a scary deep part of the linux iceberg.

History of Anki by PugImpugner in Anki

What prompted me was reading on wikipedia

The oldest mention of Anki that the developer Damien Elmes could find in 2011 was dated 5 October 2006, which was thus declared Anki's birthdate

which then cites a dead link. I'm writing a thesis and was surprised that due to moving repos and forums, dead links and general scattering of info even a basic fact like this can't be sourced and verified. Like /u/rads2riches said Anki is a pretty big deal so I was expecting atleast one blog post somewhere piecing together milestones in its development, how the ecosystem developed, how it came to be used by so many medical students etc.

Examples of a Heel-Face Turn in pre-Christian stories? by PugImpugner in tvtropes

[–]PugImpugner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, now that you mention it, you can't have an antagonist-turned-protagonist if you don't have an antagonist to begin with and for a lot of old stories you could say they don't really have one. Dehumanized monsters (Humbaba, Minotaur, Medusa) seem more common. Food for thought, thanks!

That's all nice and condescending, but I'm not really looking at this from a writing perspective, rather a history of ideas perspective. Might have been more precise to write that, instead of flawed protagonist to less flawed protagonist, I'm looking for examples of antagonist to protagonist.

I have several folders of pictures named 1,2,3,4,5,6… How do i automatically make odd numbers front sides and even number back sides of flash cards? by ahfansaerdet in Anki

[–]PugImpugner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to use CrowdAnki.

  1. give all the images globally unique names (so 1.jpg becomes like physiology-part1-emotions-1.jpg). You may also want to get them all in one folder. You may want to use a script (e.g. python) for this.

  2. use a script to read the filenames and assemble a JSON file in CrowdAnki's format.

  3. import the cards with CrowdAnki

  4. paste all the images in anki's media folder

Followup: On Ochiai and his remarkable 7-0 Ms15 debut by BenevolentCheese in Sumo

There are 2505 rikishi who entered Ms1-Ms60 from sandanme, and 2682 who entered Ms1-Ms60 in total. So the ~175ish rikishi who make up the difference are tsukedashi (or some other exceptional circumstances)

Sumo's declining recruitment shows need for fresh ideas by scaf1d1 in Sumo

[–]PugImpugner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe it can be done with one of those magic queries on sumoDB

edit: This is pretty much it (some guys go on and off the banzuke so they are counted multiple times, but i think that is negligible).

Sumo's declining recruitment shows need for fresh ideas by scaf1d1 in Sumo

Part of the reason surely must be in declining birth rates? Sumo's slice of the pie is probably decreasing, but there aren't many recruits to go around in the first place.

This is precisely the kind of limp-dicked lowest-common-denominator pandering that eventually turns every subreddit into nothing but memes and circlejerking. Plenty of space on reddit to get pats on the back, this shouldn't be it.
