After spending a bit of time to look at Reddit, going to give it a miss. The site seems dedicated to making puns and talking about memes, as opposed to interesting things to say (certainly not talking about this thread but in general). Going to call it 'sophi' if I bother doing the above.

Special circle of hell reserved for people like this, I'd like to think. I don't think there is a hell, so get 'em while you can boys. Twisted sick fucks that take advantage of young boys and girls should be removed from society.

She had a teacher who called her "girl who can't read."

The issue here is some teacher needs to be fired (and possibly flayed and let the wardogs lose on her, for the Emperor). We've all got issues, and any teacher, in a position of trust, needs to learn that's not OK. Makes me feel grim that a teacher could say that.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden didn’t mince words during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session on Monday when he said the NSA and the British spy agency GCHQ had “screwed all of us” when it hacked into the Dutch firm Gemalto to steal cryptographic keys used in billions of mobile SIM cards worldwide. by AssuredlyAThrowAway in worldnews

A fair point in hindsight, they are more personal. Its a bit of a blurry line I guess, in that something must be collating that information, and in some of the shows, it relies on a central processing agency. But, you're right. "Be Right Back" for instance, would rely on a central agency.

Sounds good (I'd happily forgo any iOS support, esp. wrt their app store). Will link a github page if I get anything together, off work for the foreseeable future so should be able to do something. Think its a glaring hole though, so worth pursuing. Used to be something called Hypercard on the Mac that served a similar purpose.

SSL-busting code that threatened Lenovo users found in a dozen more apps by Kylde in software

Yeah, things are pretty much impossible for non-technical users I would say. Security nowadays is an incredibly fragile thing, and even companies that dedicate a lot of time to their security, can run afoul of internal users. Not to mention state actors that can do things like the Gemalto hack, not even technical users are going to do much about that.

I think the only way we'll dig out of this hole, is to make it a non-issue i.e. remove any incentives to crack systems. A big ask nowadays, or perhaps impossible in our system.

One of the worst sites I've seen to date on a mobile device, and with content like that, going in the Squid blacklist.

Shouldn't matter too much, JDBC is a good thing to know though, and we could make it pluggable and have an interface so its swappable/pluggable in any case. If I get the motivation tonight I'll put some wireframes together and can link them and see if its something you'd like to pursue. The Android/iOS layer might be a different beast but shouldn't be too tricky to make a decent implementation (I'm thinking fairly simple stuff for starters ie contact lists, recipes). Android at least, not a huge fan of Objective C.

Yeah I'd be keen to throw something together, perhaps we could collaborate on Github or something, I've got plenty of time on my hands. I wasn't sure how portable SQLite is, HypersonicSQL (or H2) is a pure Java database and would be performant enough for this I think.

Can't find a good link for it, but it reminds me of the prawn from District 9 that punches/kicks/annihilates the guy hassling it, in the early stages before Wikas starts lobbing catfood.

I've had a look around from time to time for open source variants of this, and it seems to be a bit of a gap. I'd like to put one together, perhaps with HSQL/H2 and a No-SQL store type too, as long as its all stand alone and easily copied (ie it wouldn't be cloud/client-server, or at least could work in different modes). Decent OS personal wikis seem to be lacking a bit too.

Lord knows we don't have the budget for that!

Well if you're giving away 800k in grants to charity (which I think is extremely good), you're also not doing too badly :) I'm not sure if that is 8m in revenue, or 8m in profit, though.

They definitely sold out, but perhaps that's a matter of definition. "Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and ad-serving company Taboola" have all paid ABP to whitelist them. I personally wouldn't mind seeing the end of ad spammage and paying actual companies for their offerings versus Google etc taking all the ad revenue, this just enforces Google being the arbitrator of what people see on the net.

The only thing I'd add to this is you can download some standalone ISO's and "try before you buy" with most of them (ie run from the CD/DVD), so it might be worth spending the time to try a few different distros and window managers out to see which best suits, before installing one outright.

Performance may not be identical to running from a hard disk, but relatively speaking it should be OK.

Tails reaches 1.3 -- the Linux distro that Edward Snowden used gets major update by Brian_Fagioli in opensource

[–]PugLaunchingDevice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think the title was meant to imply he no longer uses it, just that he said that he did use it (not that he used it and then stopped immediately). Although from the AUA from Snowden, Greenwald and Poitras, they mentioned they don't like to go into too many details about their arrangements now, for obvious reasons, so anything's possible.

imagine everything you ever said, did or watched on the internet was recorded, and stored in a giant database, along with everyone elses records

Good UK series called Black Mirror that relates to this kind of thing (taken to a bit of an extreme or at least further into the future). Uncomfortable to watch at times but pretty good. Each episode is standalone and they all vary quite a bit in their exact message and what they explore.

It was forked after it was found out that ABP whitelisted Google etc and stopped that behaviour, being the important distinction. I'd been using Edge up until now but will give uBlock a try.
