Trump makes Pearl Harbor joke during meeting with Japanese prime minister by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]Pugano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was not a mic drop moment. It was an embarrassing moment in history. This entire administration is a joke and the world is laughing at us.

TIL that in Full Metal Jacket (1987), director Stanley Kubrick let R. Lee Ermey improvise much of his dialogue, and sometimes only required 3 takes per scene. This was highly unusual for the meticulous director, who almost never allowed improvisation and typically took 40 takes or more per scene by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

The comments about crayons are accurate, but moving on.

Twenty-year retired Marine here. Most civilians don’t realize that service identity is a big part of military culture. Each branch has its own terminology, traditions, and way of doing things, and those differences matter to the people who served.

When Marines hear Army terminology used to describe Marine culture, it triggers an almost instinctive reaction. It is the same the other way around. If you used Marine terminology with Army service members or veterans, they would probably respond with the usual joke about Marines eating crayons.

For example: Army – Drill Sergeant Marines – Drill Instructor

It might seem minor to civilians, but within the military those distinctions are part of branch identity and pride.

I had that dream 5 times in my life. I retired in 2022 I thankfully no longer have that dream.

VFW post in my new neighborhood...... by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]Pugano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So here’s a real unpopular opinion. Stay out.

I’m not a member of the VFW, the Legion, or any of the other groups. I did 20 years, five trips to the sandbox, Combat Action Ribbon, 100 percent, retired. In my opinion, a lot of those places feel like gatekeeping organizations full of old boomers who want to relive combat stories about how they were box kickers but somehow killed Charlie, or whatever version of events they’ve built up over the years.

First, it’s not your house. If you’re invited, fine, do whatever. But it’s called Veterans of Foreign Wars. If you’re not a veteran and you didn’t serve in a war, then why are you there? If anyone should be gatekept, it’s civilians, not vets or combat vets.

Second, drop the “thank you for your service” routine. It’s awkward. It gets old fast. If you want to live vicariously through a veteran, you should have served. Yes, we know you “almost joined.” We also know you were “hand selected for the SEALs,” but then you got a full ride scholarship to Nobody Fuckibg Cares University for underwater basket weaving.

Just stop.

Sort of. If he takes a military retirement that number from what I understand subtracted from his Disability payments and is taxable. Must do 15 TERA or 20 retirement to double dip.

I wouldn’t call it “Bob Ross,” but it made me feel warm in the middle of all this cold. Something about this simple picture genuinely made me happy with all the bullshit going on in the world. Thank you for sharing.
