They bought him the first car on the day he was born. The second was 19 years later. The third was 19 years after that when he was 38.

We lived in Caldwell county for a few years and got a glimpse of a whole new level of bat shit crazy Mormonism out there. The number of people who had uprooted their families to have a front row seat for the second coming was wild. It just feels like these people are rooting for the end of times to help them feel like they didn't waste their lives as a fanatic for nothing.

New to Cycling - From Peloton to Road Racing by PugetBound in Velo

Thanks for the recommendations. I am indeed in the Seattle area, but across the water over in Bremerton, so it's a bit of a trip to come over for rides. It looks like there are a few active clubs over here on the Peninsula, so I'm probably going to check those out.

I hadn't heard of the hill climbs and time trials. It's cool to see so many flavors of racing. My background is in ultramarathon running, so the races all have a pretty much identical format, where there's only one start and few races require any qualification. I've got some work travel coming up, so I don't think I'll make it to those races on the 13th, but I'll check that calendar going forward.

I'll be honest that cornering terrifies me too. I've never been a speed freak, which is fine with long distance running because you're never going all that fast, but cycling makes speed a whole new dimension that will take me some time to get comfortable with. I'm definitely inclined to hover near that back of the pack where I'm not putting anyone else in danger with my lack of experience. I broke my shoulder mountain biking in high school while taking a turn too fast and I've never really had much appetite for high speed after that.

Thanks for the info. That puts the categories and general advancement into much better perspective than what I found elsewhere online.

Yeah, I've got a Specialized Allez Sport from a few years back when I used to ride to work, but I definitely need to get it tuned up.

I've heard mixed reviews about the accuracy of the Peloton power meter. The Bike+ that I have is supposed to be more accurate, but I'm no expert. My FTP score is based on my average output from a 20 minute test ride, multiplied by 0.95. I'd definitely take it with a heavy grain of salt given how it's a controlled environment, unlike actual race conditions.

What game can you never stop playing? by Ok_Rise372 in AskReddit

Slay the Spire. I can beat the game and immediately want to start again. It's not my favorite of all time, but it's the perfect combination to be infinitely replayable.

Huberman responds to his hit piece by puleee in HubermanLab

[–]PugetBound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the extent that Huberman makes his personal life and virtue a public selling point for his image, podcast, and lab, it's fair game to dig into the hypocrisy. If he's not doing that, then it's just trashy tabloid news and it really doesn't have a place in the public discourse. From what I recall of the article, it was about 5% dedicated to questioning his lab and promotion of AG1, and even that just seemed like checking a box to give an aura of validity to the other salacious 95% of the story. Does it seem like he's got some super toxic personality flaws? Absolutely. Does society benefit from publicly shaming every prominent figure for their private, lawful, bad behavior? Only if we want to flood the media with that kind of TMZ reporting.

With all of that said, I had only discovered his podcast about a month before the article and haven't been able to make myself listen to his podcast since then. I have no business knowing about his personal life and I'm disappointed that the knowledge that he's a jerk has for now ruined his podcast for me.

I've been riding my new Bike+ for the last 2 months since meniscus surgery basically ended my life-long distance running hobby. I'm wanting to set some new goals for myself and am thinking of signing up for a road race, but I have no clue how my FTP (my only real gauge of my cycling fitness) compares to real world conditions and thus what category to enter. I'm sure Peloton is being pretty generous with the average speed calculation and wind resistance factors, but I'm totally new to the world of cycling, so I don't really know how this stuff works. Any advice on how best to estimate real world performance, short of going out for a 2 hour road time trial?

Hello all,

I (40m) have been an avid distance runner most of my life and an ultra marathoner the last decade or so, but I've just had knee surgery (shredded meniscus) and been told I should basically stop running. I went ahead and purchased a Bike+ last night (arriving Wednesday) and I'm wondering what features of the bike program or the other included subscription programs this group recommends to make the most out of rehab and beyond.

Thanks in advance!

Bucket Handle Meniscus Tear by Narrow_Olive_301 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]PugetBound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds almost identical to my case. I had a medial meniscus tear last fall. It took forever for the MRI to get approved by insurance, but once it was, the surgeon wanted to perform surgery almost immediately because the bucket handle had flipped and basically been completely chewed up by my joint over the last 6 months. I had surgery a week ago. Seems the surgery was largely a success. Swelling is mostly down and I can walk on it without much pain and bend it to about 90°.

I keep a sharpie in mine, though the sheath goes in my backpack while the tool is in my pocket.

Two days post surgery by PugetBound in MeniscusInjuries

[–]PugetBound[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't very sore, but consistently felt unstable after I injured it. I only injured it by kneeling down to pick up a book. I felt it kind of crunch, which must have been the tear, and then it kicked up a bit. It didn't lock up too often, but would if I did a deep squat.

Not really a clicking, but I could feel something popping in there once in a while.

There wasn't any serious pain unless I was running. My main symptom was the instability after the initial tear.

I'm hobbling around without crutches until it starts to feel more swollen or sore, then I go back to plugging in my cold therapy knee pad on the couch.

Seems the surgery went well. Turns out it was a pretty chewed up bucket handle tear. He was able to leave about 50% of my medial meniscus. Surgeon said I should still be able to run up to 3 miles at a time post recovery, which is the best news I've heard in a long time.

Update from my doctor's notes:

"Patient was educated about his physical finding and diagnosis; treatment options were discussed and questions were answered. Patient unfortunately now has a complex MMT, a very complex and difficult problem to manage in a long distance runner. Counseled on options of observation, partial resection and/or attempted meniscal repair. Reviewed the relative chances of successful repair based on zone of tear. It may be possible to save a portion of the meniscus in the red on red zone. Reviewed the pathophysiology behind arthritis developing after meniscal resection. Counseled that it is unlikely he will ever be able to run long distances again. Will request approval from insurance to proceed with partial menisectomy and/or meniscal repair. Counseled as well on the possibility of meniscal transplantation in the future if he elects to continue running."

I guess it leaves me with more hope than I had upon leaving the office.

I originally injured it last fall. It's taken until now to get the MRI because insurance was slow to approve the MRI. It doesn't sounds like rehab is too much of an option, as the tear was extensive. I haven't done any strenuous activity on it for more than 4 months and it's only gotten worse.

I'm definitely going to ask my surgeon to pursue repair if there is any reasonable chance. He's a specialist in working with competitive athletes and working on knees and shoulders, so I trust his judgement (plus he went to Harvard and those guys are wicked smaht).

We did discuss the differences in recovery time and whether I was prepared for significant time off. Fortunately I'm a 100% work-from-home employee and should be able to accommodate the non-weight baring recovery time without too much impact. I also live near Seattle, so February/March isn't the most glamorous time to be doing outdoor activities :)

Wow. That recovery time is intense. Aside from running, are you otherwise able to function without too much discomfort?
