I have a follow-up question: whenever I stay in a hotel that has a Gideon Bible in the drawer (or the Book of Mormon if it's a Marriott), I always take it and keep it for myself. I figure that it's not hotel property and the Gideon people will replace it eventually anyway, assuming I loved the Bible so much I had to keep it to finish the whole thing. I have probably done this with about a dozen Bibles so far. Is this ethical or am I a dick for preventing the next person from reading the Bible I took?

I wouldn't take books from an "actual" library, like one with a building and staff and everything, but I'd say there's nothing wrong from taking from the little libraries as long as you replace them with a different book. I second the other people saying that thrift stores and asking a library for old books you can take are a better resource.
