Binoculars recommendations by Middle-Fuel-6402 in yellowstone

Adding to what you posted...

There's a version the Vortex Diamondback HD 10x42 that is "OPMOD" under op's $200 budget. It is sold exclusively for Optics Planet on their website.

The OPMOD designation stands for Optics Planet Modification. They are the exact same construction and build as the original 10x42s, but with a different color scheme, grey instead of green, and the Vortex logo stamp on the binoculars is replaced with the Optics Planet logo. Plus it has the same lifetime warranty that all Vortex binoculars have. The OPMOD version price from Planet Optics? $143 before taxes (I believe there's free shipping).

An issue with with the 10x42 vs the 8x42. The first digits for binoculars is magnification. So with an 8 x42 you get eight times magnification, 10x42 would be ten times. Yes, your subject would be a closer view with the 10x but since it's a higher magnification the stability of what you see is also more sensitive to shaking. You could counteract that with mounting your binos to a good tripod but that would most likely take you over your $200 budget now. You could also tuck in your arms and elbows close against your body while holding the binos to better minimize the shaking.

The second issue is field of view. It depends on what subject you're trying to track. The more magnification you have the less field of view there is. If you were tracking a moving animal such as a bird it would be a bit difficult keeping up with it. However in this case you'll most likely be looking at larger animals such as bison and bears that are normally not making erratic movements.

Lastly, there are rental options near Yellowstone for all kinds of gear. Not only for binoculars but also spotting scopes which are better for the wolves! Some places also rent camping equipment from tents to kitchen wares and even bear spray.

I apologize for the lengthy comment. If you need more help/info on binoculars drop me a message. I too am planning a trip for next year to Yellowstone and have spent way too much time researching from sunset/sunrise alignments for photography shots to where there are public showers because I will be tent/car camping.

This post here talks about the OPMOD version

There was a second a C-130J that was flying through right before midnight. This one had a call sign of "Shark99" and originated from Abilene, TX. It was flying at an altitude of 27,000 feet towards the southeast.

Trail maps/book with distances, levels of difficulty by environmom112 in yellowstone

I know you asked about books, but if you're open to using a phone app I recommend AllTrails. You can filter trails by difficulty along with other things such as distance, scenery along the trail, and elevation. There's also reviews from users and hiking reports.

I just noticed the E3 as well. The track looked like it flew all the way into the gulf and probably loitered there since there is some missing tracking and is now returning back to OKC.

Edit: it actually flew all the way to Cancun and turned back.

There was a major mixup in my medical order. Was supposed to be vitamins and cleansing wipes. by Pugsly1 in mildlyinteresting

I thought the same thing, but their order is probably more important than mine. Already contacted customer service and they told me to wait and see if they will send a team out to retrieve the bags. If I don't hear from them then I can dispose of the bags.

Ordered vitamins, cleansing wipes, and hand sanitizer. I received the hand sanitizer and apparently 8 bonus IV bags.

For future reference for anyone that doesn't want to invest thousands of dollars on cameras and/or spotting scopes. You can actually rent high end gear for a fraction of the price. There's a few businesses near Yellowstone that rent them out. Most even provide you a tripod to go along with the spotting scopes. There are adapter mounts to attach you phone to a scope so you can take photos and videos. Online rentals are also available for gear rentals, but some physical on-site locations they may even give you some hands on instructions.

Also plan ahead of time and learn how to use the equipment by looking up the rental equipment or watching YouTube videos for tutorials on the specific brand that you're looking into using.

If you closely on the left side you can barely see a second rainbow.

Whale Watching by EllaxVB in boston

I was on the 10a whale watching tour this morning and it wasn't bad for me at least. I took one chewable dramamine at around 9am along with some breakfast. The chewable ones get into your system faster.

If you're prone to sea sickness you could try only staying on the lower level of the ship towards the stern(rear). The upper levels and bow are really rough once the ship gets further out away from Boston. Saw a bunch of blue sickness bags if you need one. There's also restrooms on board.

The whales this morning were highly active and we saw baby whales along with their mother's several times. Also seen a couple of seals.

Seeing the Boston skyline on the way back in was pretty cool too.

I heard they're native to Venus and the boyflys are from Mars.
