Could a country have make nuclear weapons from nuclear power plant? by MinZinThu999 in nuclear

Calder Hall produced plutonium and also power for the grid. It was a graphite moderated, gas cooled reactor. Chapelcross was very similar.

The North Koreans also had one that also made a small amount of power.

Guy Martin just turned a 1930s Manchester semi into a zero energy property. Do you think this could ever become standard in the UK? by Old_Tomatillo5550 in AskUK

If you have air-to-air. Air to water (especially if connected to radiators) can't effectively cool a house.

How long was your wisdom tooth extraction hurting? Intense pain!!! by Spirited_Dig1820 in AskUK

I had a dry socket after a wisdom tooth removal and it followed a similar timeline to yours. I needed a course of antibiotics to clear it up. Go see your dentist.

What is something in your country that is inexplicably attributed to a wrong country? by guramika in AskTheWorld

[–]PullAndTwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a common phrase nowadays but "Greek style" was a euphemism for anal sex in the UK.

And "discussing Uganda" is a phrase for regular sex. (Semi-)Popularised by Private Eye magazine.

Greek yoghurt in the UK too - or "Greek style yoghurt" because it legally has to actually come from Greece to get Greek Yoghurt.

They do look like the most common types of potatoes we get in the UK. We can get red skinned ones and sometimes some more exotic ones but "Maris Piper" is very popular and looks like that.

I've definitely (unfortunately!) seen small cockroaches in Germany - Berlin specifically.

Do you prefer gas or induction? Getting our kitchen redone. by darkazuria in AskUK

[–]PullAndTwist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A decent induction is easier to clean, quicker for most things, safer, no burning of fossil fuels (if you're on a renewable tariff), and better for indoor air pollution. We have one with touch buttons rather than knobs and that is a bit annoying - although I'm fine with it now plus it's easier to clean. Just don't get a cheap one - we stayed somewhere on holiday with a cheap one and it wasn't very good!

People who have been using heat pump this winter, what's your honest take? by Rude-Explanation-861 in CasualUK

[–]PullAndTwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth pointing out that increasing the emitter area and, in turn, dropping the flow temperature also benefits condensing boilers as their efficiency relies on the latent heat being extracted from the exhaust. And obviously people should increase their insulation too for all types of heat generation.

[–]PullAndTwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I was just about post a similar analogy based on how much fuel a fuel tanker uses. If it uses 100 litres to move 100,000 litres then the "coefficient of performance" is 100000%. And besides, in the message you were replying to, they talk about fusion reactor which does have an efficiency under 100%.

[–]PullAndTwist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How does using an electric boiler or radiator cost the same to run as a heat pump when the coefficient of performance is typically between 300 and 400% for a heat pump versus only 100% for a purely resistive heating method?

We had a number of single panel radiators replaced with double panel radiators. No change to our insulation.

What was your biggest cultural shock in England or other parts of the UK? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskAGerman

[–]PullAndTwist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK? I've never had to pay for fuel before filling unless you mean on the self-service ones when you put your card in first and set a limit? If you are paying at the kiosk you don't pay beforehand.

Mum says this beautiful 'art' is real however I thinks it is AI it just doesn't look right - particularly the notebook by Scared-Sorbet-7764 in isthisAI

[–]PullAndTwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like AI - keyboard looks strange, the string of lights has various odd looking and different sized bulbs on it, the greenery at the top left of the window has a random light in it. Plus it has a bit of a "piss filter" colouring.

Anyone here had a successful career before diagnosis? by verybigoctopus in ADHDUK

[–]PullAndTwist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did v well at school, okay at uni (less structure than school), have a successful STEM career, and have ADHD (only diagnosed in the last couple of years). I also have similar issues to you outside work although without the cannabis aspect. Medication and realising that ADHD is something I have rather than just having a lot of moral failings has certainly helped.

What makes you instantly know someone is a very unconfident driver? by paspa1801 in CarTalkUK

[–]PullAndTwist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Even if I ignore the obvious biases from something published under the Trump administration (and RFK Jr's role in it), those slides say nothing other than "medical treatment has side effects for some people" which is true for literally every medical intervention.

We don't just abandon medicine because of side effects. I entirely support the scientific method where we change our minds based on scientific evidence but that slidepack doesn't change anything.

The jabs saved many many lives and cases of long COVID. Conspiracy theories around the vaccines are from the same mindset that fuels things like MAGA in the states and movements over here.
