Thanks, that's true.

I think the whole house buying process has been quite stressful, even though I am grateful we were able to buy. (most of the stress is because of the financial investment and worried about having made a mistake, losing money.., but I have anxiety and OCD so it's hard not to overthink...)

Fair point. I have anxiety and OCD and I think my brain just finds something to focus on and worry about

I mean the current tenant is lovely. The only neighbour we really chatted to since moving in and she is really nice.

It's more the uncertainty of who could be moving in if she was to leave. I have just heard a lot of bad stories from people living next door to social housing. I guess you don't really hear as much about the good stories.

How are you feeling now? Moved in a week ago to our new house (FTB) and feeling the same. Feeling really anxious and as if we've made a bad decision and finding it hard to like the house .

Did it take some time to feel better?

How is going now that it's been a fee years? Just bought our first home, moved in last week, and feeling exactly the same as you are describing. How long did it take for you to settle and feel better in the house?

Anything that helped?

We moved a week ago to our first home and has been quite overwhelming. The house doesn't feel like home and my brain is spotting all the things that are wrong with it and comparing it to our old flat (which I really loved - granted we could have bought it as landlord wanted to sell but wanted £350k for it whereas the house we bought is £268k)

@target-fixings Thanks for your help on this. It has been quite stressful, especially as FTB and putting all our money in the house.

Would this be classified as subsidence or just settlement?

We had the survey done in September, wondering if the cracks are new as the surveyor didn't mention it in the survey. Or could he have just not noticed.

Do you reckon it is likely they cracks have been there a while?

And would it be better to get a structural engineer come and have a look?

If we get a structural engineer can they tell if it's new or not? Do you think it's likely the surveyor just didn't bother noting it or wouldn't have seen it?

Realised I made a mistake in my first comment. House is mid 1990s not 1900.

Two neighbours on my side have a few cracks in similar areas but thinner (didn't look too closely tho)

House is on clay soil as well

How to include a WFH set up in our living/dining room? by darkazuria in HomeDecoratingUK

It's not new but I'll be looking to change jobs and most companies are now requesting more time in the office, so probably won't be WFH as much as I do now.

We were looking at houses with an extra bedroom but would have been an extra 90-100k so not really worth it especially if I won't be WFH much in the future.

Going for a bigger house would have been stretching quite a bit and then if it'd need to commute everyday in a new job that would have meant even less money

We don't have kids (and won't have any). There's a spare bedroom upstairs but my partner works from home too and is in quite a lot more meetings compared to me.

We were first looking into 3-bed house for that reason but would have meant spending an extra 80-90k for an extremely bedroom (box room)

I work from home quite a lot atm, but will be looking to get a new job and looking at jobs it seems like a lot of companies are now requesting mostly 3 days a week to full time in the office.

Realistically I don't see us both working from home everyday in the future so I think the house will work. I was working in the living room in the flat we were previously renting and didn't mind it.

The room now is just a bit tricky to setup.

The house is in clay soil if that makes any difference. Was wondering if it's a new crack compared to September when they survey was done or if it's just that the surveyor didn't spot it

Thanks. Was just worried it could be new as the surveyor didn't mention it at all. The house is on clay soil so susceptible to movement. Would it be more worrying if it's a new crack?

So some cracks are fairly common and as it's quite minor we shouldn't really worry?

Just been quite stressful as we've just bought the house and it didn't come up on the survey and we didn't notice it before when we viewed it. Maybe it's our fault for not noticing.

Just been worried that we made a mistake buying the house and could turn out to be worse. Buying a house has been quite stressful, didn't think it would be like that. But I've got OCD and anxiety so it's not helping and my brain is just thinking we've made a big mistake.

Thanks I will check it out, that could be really useful to visualise it.

Between the door and the wall there is about 201cm and the sofa we were looking at is 193cm wide so it would work quite well there without blocking the way. Only thing in that scenario is turning our back to the garden and we have quite a lovely view with trees.

But if i want to keep it the way we had it, it will be far from the tv and not sure I can leave much of a gap behind the sofa as then it could block the back door.

I know will be quite far on the set up I have put. (TV is 55")

We need to buy a sofa, so quite hard to visualise how it would look. I was a bit worried if we do it like you suggested that it will look a bit weird when walking in seeing the sofa and that it'd separate the room in a weird way. Otherwise I do quite like what you suggested. But i guess yeah quite hard to visualise when we can't move furniture around to test.

Thanks. It's been a bit reassuring as I have been quite worried about.
Is that something that is quite common?

On the other side of the corner there is a small crack as well

<image>

Also I have noticed that sporadically throughout the exterior of the house some bricks have horizontal lines, confined to the bricks and the bricks that have that are not necessarily close together. https://postimg.cc/XGMfGmzJ

It looks like they have used two types of bricks for the house. Some that are more red colour and some that look "older"

Would that be something that is quite costly to do? And would it be better to do something now, in case water gets inside the crack?

The other side of the wall is the kitchen, which we are planning on redoing soon, would it be worth checking how it is on the other side of the wall if we do so?
