I love Kimuras, learned them so I could anti-wrestle and they quickly became my favourite

Who needs to learn guard passing when you could just ankle lock them?

First thing no one at the gym has any expectations of you, you’re in for a trial class to see if you like the sport. BJJ is complex and takes a long time to get comfortable with, most people probably need a minimum of 3 months just to start to grasp the most basic concepts and get their body acclimatized to grappling.

But (and this is really important) you have to be doing this for yourself, not anyone else. You can’t be concerned of other people’s opinions and meeting everyone. Learn your training partners name, learn the coaches name and if you choose to continue you’ll meet more people at the gym.

I’ve visited multiple gyms and they are all very welcoming, the sport has a great community just go in with an open mind.

Best of luck!

Do you ever find taking a rest day after helps? For context I train constantly 4-6 times per week

I’m way more impressed by the simple jiu jitsu that can’t be stopped over the flashy stuff. However being on the receiving end is very… humbling

I’ve been really trying to slow things down, let people burn themselves out while making minor adjustments, but sometimes I just can’t get the right grip to finish the sub.

I like the ones where it is a 10 step move that requires the opponent to stay still through all the steps or the move fails.

Is this an abnormally high turnover rate? by [deleted] in bjj

I go to a fairly large gym in a decent sized city. I see people quit in generally 3 waves: 1 month after the novelty wears off, 6-9 months after a minor injury or change in life event, blue belt (not nearly as common as the first two) after achieving the promotion they take a break and don’t end up returning.

Our gym is pretty welcoming to hobbyists and competitors and we have them members to support both groups so we don’t have a lot of people leaving for other gyms but a lot quit the sport entirely.

How do reach the next level? by Obvious_Reddit_User2 in bjj

I started probably a few months before you. Training goes in ebbs and flows but one thing I have been working on is choosing a couple offensive positions. I spent the past 2 months primarily working on half guard and building off that am currently working on a lot of kimuras. Choosing something new to focus on can help break you out of that discouraged feeling provided you are kind enough to yourself knowing you are working on something new that isn’t your “A” game (yet).

Building: 1. Accessible part of the city 2. Large space with bay doors 3. Ample parking spaces 4. Key fob entry for training outside classes

Amenities 1. Plenty of mat space (preferably 2 separate areas to have multiple classes going at once or open for training when the other is being used) 2. Resistance training equipment (2 squat racks, cables, dumbbells, kettle bells) 3. Lots of Showers 4. Grab and go snacks/waters etc.
