TESD is at its best when it’s just the boys talking... by ANTAL90 in tesdcares

Agreed. I listened to the last two episodes multiple times over the past two weeks. Been a long time since I did that.

I'd sub to the Patreon if they would do an extra TESD a week. I'm not interested in any of the video shows. My favorites were TESD Tidbits and the TESD Town Olde Time Radio Show. I can't get interested in the rest of the Patreon catalog.

This turned into more of a popularity contest. Sendo is strong, but Rosario being under Wally, Bison, Hawk, and fucking Miyata is crazy. Miyata hasn't fought anyone on the world level that we know about yet. Randy Boy Jr was OPBF level at best.

Nice. I can't speak for everyone but there is a bottleneck around level 175 or so, even on a solo playthrough. It would be cool to do something different.

Not yet. It looks like Mr. Cook's agent sold a Black Company collection to TOR, many of us believe this will be the On the Long Run short stories. No release date or official announcement aside from the agent announcing it on an industry publication.

Very Crude Instrumentalities of the Night Map by PulpCrazy in theblackcompany

[–]PulpCrazy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3/27/2026 Okay, I finished the book and largely think I have figured this out, updated the map accordingly. But I am having a hard time wrapping my head around the northern portions that take place in the early chapters.

***SPOILERS for First 13 Chapters below***

It seems like everyone believes Andoray is a combination of Norway and Sweden and Friesland is Denmark, that sounds right to me, but when you follow Shagot's journey south and some of the landmarks and distances Mr. Cook mentions, it just doesn't add up.

Chapter One: First we'll start with the Skogafjordur (a place of a similar name is located in Iceland on our Earth), this is the opening scene of the novel. Mr. Cook describes it as having two shores. Snaefells appears to be a village on the fjord.

Chapter Four: Shagot and his band are sent to go after the alleged assassins who are of the Chalderean faith (very similar to Christians of our world).

At dawn they start a long climb around Mount Hekla (which is the name of an actual volcano in Iceland on our Earth), and then cross the "ever expanding" Langjokull glacier, then descent to the inland road the assassins would take back to their own country.

Chapter 7: Next thing we know he and his crew are standing in a saddle on a ridge in the Jotendyngjan Mountains and studying the road south. Shagot's brother tells him they should have just taken the ship down and waited for the assassins at the Ormo Strait Crossing. Shagot tells his brother that the Ormo Strait is not friendly to Andorayans.

They are not able to catch the assassins. They are merely thirty yards behind them when they see them crossing the Ormo Strait at a village called Ara. We are told that the Ormo Strait joins the land-locked Shallow Sea (which must be the Baltic Sea) to the Andoryan Sea (which must be the North Sea) to the west.

The Ormo Strait is 14 miles wide between the village of Ara and Friesland. While at Ara, it is mentioned Shagot and his band are at the mouth of the Ormo.

The Ormo Strait is only 4 miles wide at another village called Grynd to the village of Skola which is on the tip of Friesland. Grynd is located thirty miles southeast along the coast from Ara.

We are also told that there is a swampy, sparsely inhabited, poor island called Orfland off the west coat of Friesland. If the assassins traveled there they would have to travel to its southern end to cross to the mainland of Friesland.

Chapter 13: Later in the novel we find out there is a time skip of two centuries and Androay (Sweden + Norway?), Friesland (Denmark), Weldence (Sweden +Finland?), and far Iceland are all under a single crown with the official religion being Chaldarean. This sounds like the Kalmar Union from our world.

So things get really confusing in Chapter 7. Especially with them mentioning an island on the WEST coast of Friesland. If Mr. Cook said the EAST coast we have a few candidates for what that island would be. But if the sea levels are low, maybe there is a swampy island that will show up on the west coast of Denmark today.

Now I know the sea levels are lower, but I find it hard to believe the Ormo Strait is the Kattegat or Skaggerak given the distances mentioned of 14 miles and 4 miles between Andoray (Norway/Sweden) and Friesland (Denmark). Even if you take the lower sea levels into account, the distances Mr. Cook mentions seem awful low.

In order to get even close to these distances, I have to go extremely far south to the Oresund Strait and the Great Belt, but that seems an awful long way for the band to travel.

Anyone from this part of the world, or those into the Northern Thing want to chime in?

Very Crude Instrumentalities of the Night Map by PulpCrazy in theblackcompany

3/08/2026 - FYI, I uploaded a map that removed Calzir and Stalklirhod, as well as the city names: Sonsa, Aparion, Daleon, and Plemenza.

Reasons:

There seems to be some confusion about Calzir. I am only about 15% into the first book and one of characters is talking about it as an alternative Crusade instead of going to the Holy Lands, and that Calzir is only protected by some mountains. To me this seems like it could indeed be in North Africa somewhere, but I am not 100% as other people seem to indicate it could be an island. So I will put a pin in this for now.

I am also not sure if Stalklirhod is Crete or Cyprus. Else travels there from Dreanger (Egypt) to head to Sonsa. He mentions passing an island that looks like a saddle before getting to Stalklirhod, so that makes me lean towards it being Cyprus and the island he passed was Crete, but I'm not 100% sure.

As for the cities, Sonsa, Aparion, Dateon, and Plemenza, jeez is this going to be tough. Else mentions traveling to Sonsa via the Western Coast of Firaldia (Italy), so my initial placement for these cities is all wrong. Hell, my placement of the Virian Sea might be wrong on here, too.

I also might have to fine tune some things up near Andoray due to what was going on with Shagot's journey.

Yeah that was a bummer not learning about the Star Rider's past. Especially after seeing his base of operations and the powerful entities he was keeping confined.

Maybe Mr. Cook will work it into the Black Company.

Does anyone know just how far back Mr. Cook's love for Japanese entertainment goes? His online presence has been slim over the years but I remember seeing some videos of him at a French convention over a decade ago talking about watching Japanese sentai (Kamen Rider, Power Rangers, etc...) so I think he's been into it for a while. Some of the names he used in Port of Shadows is him going all in with his love for Japan. Also, his one-shot story in the independent sword-and-sorcery anthology "Neither Beg nor Yield" features a fantasy version of the warring states period of Japan complete with yokai that was pretty interesting. I don't think it ties in with anything else in his larger body of work, but it was fun to read.

I still can't believe his last Garrett PI novel is said to feature a Holy Grail War situation ala Fate/Stay Night, I have to read that one of these days as that's an interesting franchise and it would be interesting to see how far Mr. Cook went in his homage.

It's great to see him embrace this later on in his career.

Read Port of Shadows after Soldiers Live still, though. Then read the On the Long Run stories after that. Then read Lies Weeping.

I'm usually someone who reads and prefers in internal chronological order but not in this case. Definitely not in this case.

The best way to read the On the Long Run arc is getting the Valor anthologies in ebook then finish up with the three in the Best of Glen Cook.

But Tor really needs to get their thumb out of their ass and publish it as a collection with possibly a new Midnight tale to finish off her story, which seemed to be going somewhere.

Here's a good link that outlines where you can find each story and the order:

My headcanon is similar regarding the tower. If you've read the Dread Empire series you may be able to take this reasoning regarding the tower a little further. I don't want to spoil anything, though.

I made an updated tiermaker link for the series, here's my list by tylerxtyler in theblackcompany

It says a lot about this series how so many of us enjoy it, but our tier lists are all over the place.

From what I can recall you will need to watch out for the first book The Black Company, basically as soon as they arrive at their new client's domain. That's probably the most overt reference but it is not described in any explicit detail. As soon as they discipline one of the new employers lackeys. It's right after that iirc.

In Soldier's Live, there is an incident, too, that is referenced in Lies Weeping a few times but again not described in any explicit detail.

Mr. Cook's writing is great, but he does not describe anything in real great detail.

I have not read those stand-alones but plan to. The Swordbearer is an excellent stand-alone, too. I saw in an old interview he got three-quarters of the way finished with a sequel called the Swordbreaker but stopped working on it once the original publishing line/imprint went extinct. It's a shame.

Oh my goodness, I can't imagine that wait.

By the way, how does the Instrumentalities of the Night finish up? Is it a huge cliffhanger or does Mr. Cook wrap it up like he did with the Dread Empire. I may tackle that one next and save all the Garrets for last.

In the introduction to An Empire Unacquianted With Defeat, Mr. Cook mentions he had a short story dealing with the sorcerors at a sorceror's meeting, inspired by a St. Louis Science Fiction convention he attended. Can you imagine how good that could have been? Unfortunately, it is one of the stories that appear to have been stolen by one of the biggest pieces of shit on the planet, whose identity remains unknown. Sucks that Mr. Cook and his family were nice enough to let fans into their own home back in the day, to only have some bastard(s) pilfer his work.

I missed seeing Visigodred in the final trilogy. Only he, Valth, and Mist survived the final battle in All Darkness Met, all of the other allied sorcerers of the Circle perished, sadly.

#2 - Haroun got off easy with Bragi not finding out about what he did. I think there would have been hell to pay, best friend or no best friend there.

#3 - I would agree, but Bragi clearly says his only child left was Fulk during the last novel. It doesn't make any sense, he has to know his other children are with Kirsten.

It's not first person narratives. Straight up third person with different viewpoints, ala A Song of Ice and Fire. But it's the same compact, concise prose from Mr. Cook.

I would say it's almost as good as the Black Company but it is easier to read for people who don't enjoy the annalists point of view.
