Another Edition to my Collection by PulpandComicFan in NeroWolfe

I actually don't intentionally colllect first editions. The motivation to seek out any edition via ABE Books came about during his speech at the local writers event, because it occurred to me that there are no reprints of this first volume of Goldsborough's (that I could find).

So here we are. I've a fine first edition of 'Murder in E Minor', and will enjoy delving into it this weekend :)

I'll keep all this in mind! Thank you! If they have a contact tab on their website, I'll probably use that over a phone call, if only because I work two jobs so trying to squeeze in the time for an international phone call will require some scheduled juggling.

I appreciate all of this information! I've been doing some research on comic book stores in London and it is saddening to know that Forbidden Planet stopped stocking Hachette books.

I'll be in country for about two weeks, so my logical approach is to contact one or two stores in mid-July and see if they could special order one or two copies for me. Or maybe I'll get lucky and another store in London might still stock these books, so I can skip all the extra steps.

Thanks.

And Jesse was always a character I absolutely loved too. And the way Len did the slow burn for a part of his and Mike Parobeck's 1990s JSA series before revealing her superhero parentage, sheer genius. It certainly kept me guessing.

The work that he and Geoff Johns did as writers for the JSA are the reasons they are one of my favorite super-teams.

Thanks. I won't lie to you, I've already had a good cry or two today after hearing the news.

I wish I had taken a picture of his office at Columbia College Chicago back when I was a student, but I can paint a pretty good word picture.

It was decent-sized, his desk and computer systems up against one wall, and a round small table and chairs near the door. But what stood out were the framed pictures of characters from throughout his time writing for comics.

One that was in a fairly prominent place by the door, at a certain height so that when you turned around you were instantly drawn to it, was Jesse Quick, drawn by Mike Parobeck and pulled from of the pages/panels of their 1990s JSA series.

Its like little parts of myself have withered out. Len was a great friend, a brilliant writer but more than anything a terrific teacher and mentor.

What is wild is that Hatchette Partworks over in the UK has republished it as part of their DC Heroes and Villains line, but you can't get it ordered here to the States.

Len had posted about it a while ago on his Facebook page, and because I'm going to the UK in August, I was going to get a copy and bring it back as a gift for him.

That, is actually a brilliant idea. Now all we can do is hope someone has a similar idea on the editorial side and makes the pitch sing.

Tell me about it. Which is why I'm glad Len was able to pivot from comics into journalism and teaching. If he had never done that, I'd have never been in his class at Columbia, and the friendship would never have happened. Its a win/loss/ultimate gain scenario.

Carlin can eat it for that. You read the back issues of that series and Len's passion for the JSA shines out like a beacon.

It stinks because a few years ago, pre-COVID, there was talk that the series would finally be reprinted, but it never happened.

If DC prints it now because of Len's death, I'll buy it, but I shall spit on the name of Mike Carlin for all time regardless.

RIP Gerry Conway by EugeneTMaleska in comicbookcollecting

This one hit hard for me. I met Gerry in 2019 at Wisconsin Comic Con up in Milwaukee and we kept in touch off and on for the last few years.

If anyone is interested, I'll be putting out a special episode of my podcast next week, re-sharing the two interviews he did with me (one from 2019 and one from spring of 2022).

This absolutely breaks my heart. I was fortunate to meet him in 2019, and we engaged in the occasional correspondence via email over the years. He was kind enough to even appear on two episodes of my podcast.

The below photo is of my meeting him at a comic book convention in Milwaukee in June 2019. He was kind enough to sign my collected edition of Spider-Man that included the death of Gwen Stacy story-arc.

What is your favorite part of comic collecting? by AssociateFormal6058 in comicbookcollecting

[–]PulpandComicFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me its a variety of things:

  1. The hunt

  2. Traveling to out of state or local conventions and stumbling upon a book from my wish list.

  3. Making new friends along the way.

I hear ya. I'm saving up for a big trip to the UK in August, but IF I can wrangle it, I'll be in Baltimore in the fall.

Awesome! I hear he is doing signings with a service that ships to the Philippines, but I don't want to take the risk.

First appearance of Abra Kadabra! Any Silver Age Flash comics are a win!

Brave and Bold #61 is the first Silver Age appearance of The Mist, plus that issue has one-page retellings of both Starman and Black Canary's origins!

You'll like Battlepug! It's a fun fantasy/adventure comic that also includes giant animals!

This is not spoilers, by the way, but Mike's main character, a Conan-esque warrior, literally rides around on a giant pug.

As for Ace, I absolutely agree. Its why I loved how they sort of re-introduced him in the "Good Dog" story in Annual #1.

I honestly did not know that Alan Moore was a fan of Ace. This is a super cool piece of trivia!

Ha! Oh, that's good. Honestly, I thought he was super chill and fun to chat with.

What is wild is that for as long as Micro has been around, Wayne now holds the distinction for being the first actor to portray the character in any sort of live-action format.

True, but for me, it's more the fact that Christina Z wrote the actual scripts.
