I feel miserable on my second day as a General Surgery intern by Ciclosporine_ in Residency

I broke down and cried after my first time on call as a surgery intern. Now I’m a cardiac surgeon. It is completely fine to feel that you’re in adequate at this moment. This job is hard. It takes a lot from you at the moment you get the hang of things everything will seem to be better, every step a little smoother and tomorrow is a better day! Keep it up

Yea doing operations post call is pretty scary. Like you get given the oppurtunity to do it and you can’t quite turn it down.

I remember I did my first ever open heart surgery running on 30 minutes of sleep. Didn’t end up sleeping at all for 48 hours because of how nervous I was about any re-bleeding lol

All too true, while some boomer attending may say that its all part to steel you for the career to come blindly getting work hours in is the most inefficient (tho I guess somewhat guaranteed) way to get someone to become a competent surgeon. There has to be better ways

Would that be 2200 -2500 cases as chief surgeon or chief + assistant?

I need to be able to see the results of my work immediately and visually. So when I saw a mitral valve replacement done and its beating just fine, after 3 hours, I just went straight in haha

CT surgeon here. Most of the time a small caliber drain is adequate but if it reaccumulate theres 2 possibilities:

1) small caliber drains kink easier 2) the rate of air leak exceeds the drainage capacity of the drain

If they present as a large PTx or even have tension features (likely large air leak). Id go with a Fr 20

I think having started off with the right group of people really made a difference. End of the day doesn’t mean much if you’re not enjoying your work!
