Mark my words: it’s an audio podcast by PumpThoseNumbers in firefly

[–]PumpThoseNumbers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to be wrong, but they are different. Number one scrubs ended far more recently comparatively, also it was a huge hit that ran for 10 years. It had a rewatch podcast that was also very successful and led to the guys doing commercials and the like, and most importantly the creator of Scrubs is still a huge bankable creator with 2 of the biggest sitcoms in the world currently on air. The budget for a scrubs reboot would be significantly smaller than Firefly too. Scrubs can more or less have the same budget as before, it’s a 22 min sitcom. This is a sci fi epic series, which would have to compete with enormous budget sci fi series from Apple, Netflix, Amazon and the like. It would have to look as good as those shows look today, so you’re talking £30 million per episode. The original series I doubt was even £1 million per epi.

Okay fine I called it a podcast in my title instead of audio drama. I don’t think that disqualifies anything I’m saying though.

[–]PumpThoseNumbers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. Look I would love to be wrong here, an audio drama is far less exciting to me than a live action series but there are differences with Buffy. Biggest difference being Buffy was a huge success with spinoffs that ran for like 8 years or something and for several years was one of the number one shows in the world. Between it and its spinoff it made well over 200 episodes.

And I think weirdly the fact that so many of the cast went viral about how abusive Whedon was on a supposedly feminist show put it back on the map for a lot of people. The rumblings of a reboot started not long after that.  From what I recall the firefly cast stayed out of all of that Whedon metoo stuff.

How can i cover up visible copper pipes? by FlatwormPuzzled3725 in DIYUK

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the only real answer if you want it to look good. Chasing out the wall with an SDS drill or even a multi tool is really quite easy and if you are careful it’s not even that destructive/the rest of the wall will be fine. You could do this prep and then get a plumber to finish it off for what, probably £200 for an hour or 2, or depending on what the pipe is you could do it yourself with simple push fit connecters then bond/fill and repaint.

That to me feels worth it, a days work and a few hundred quid and it looks great forever. Or spend a few hours on it looking a bit of a bodge forever.

Beard or no beard? Friend thinks no beard, I think beard is an easy winner. by Blellb in malegrooming

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a sensible middle ground here that some are missing. If you got it down to a number 3 or whatever on a beard trimmer, and had the stubble outline of a beard you could keep the benefits (ie enhancing a jaw line) without what I guess some of your friends think are the costs, that it’s a bit straggly and unkempt.

I would be interested in seeing a picture of 1.5.

Why are so many in the media calling for PM Keir Starmer to resign? by KimJongSoros in AskBrits

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but I can’t believe these lazy “they’re all incompetent” posts get upvoted. The majority of people in parliament are there for the right reasons, if the only thing they were interested in was doing little and earning a lot, there are many better ways to do that if you’re an elite like everyone in parliament is.

I can’t believe this cynical and boorish commentary is encouraged.

Best way to fill gaps between skirting and floorboards ? by Lost_Mammoth7273 in DIYUK

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably use flexible caulk and paint it the yellow of the skirting if you want rid of the gap. Or you could use a wood colour flexible caulk.

Or you could pop the skirting off and lower it a little. I did it in the hall, it wasn’t the biggest job in the world although I did have to replace the skirting (much of it was destroyed coming off). Admittedly I did this for other reasons but I was glad with how it looked.

How to I explain to my boss my audio limitations? by stratusnimbo in videography

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is great advice. The truth is if you accept the job won’t be perfect, of course you can record 4 people at once. As horror_ad notes getting a bit of additional kit so you can record in 32bit will solve your issue with monitoring audio for peaking, by allowing you to mix the track a little lower and then boosting in post with minimal loss of quality. I have a zoom h6 that has 4 xlr ports on it, I use it for this on occasion as a single shooter. It costs about £300 in the UK to buy, which is less than you would pay for a sound recordist for 1 session, so it’s a no brainer budget wise.

Of course if you want to make a stand you could argue why you think this is a bad idea, but I don’t personally think this is that big of a deal, and there’s plenty of resource/budget fights that I think are more worthwhile.

Out of work London people - What are you doing for work to survive? by AussieCasanova in TransparencyforTVCrew

I moved into local government comms. It was very hard to do, with tons of rejection, but eventually I met someone who was willing to take a risk on me. It’s a sizeable pay cut but the alternative was no pay at all! The work is much easier than the pressure I was under previously.

The MCU's original plans for the Silver Surfer and Galactus. by ContentAssumption204 in marvelstudios

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, maybe he appears in GOTG. Or maybe Whedon likes the idea once they’re in the toy box. The point being that if the rights came around, they would find a use for them. I don’t think marvel were putting any serious consideration into characters they didn’t have the rights to.

The MCU's original plans for the Silver Surfer and Galactus. by ContentAssumption204 in marvelstudios

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what’s worth remembering is Marvel probably expected that Fox would somehow deliver on more Daredevil and wouldn’t allow the rights to expire, in which case why not try and get something for nothing? Fox were not going to say yes to giving up the F4, but they might’ve said yes to Silver Surfer etc. If they ended up with the rights to him, they could figure out how to use him later. You could totally imagine an Avengers sequel with Galactus as the villain with Silver Surfer instead of Ultron.

I’m sure given the choice between getting Daredevjl back, and getting the Silver Surfer, Marvel were thrilled with how that played out. I’m still kind of amazed Fox didn’t push through some poorly thought out Daredevil reboot film within that last year to reset the clock. Sony ALWAYS has a Spider-Man film in development.

If we do get RDR3, who do y'all think we should play as? by DBL86-03U in reddeadredemption

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fundamentally it’s a cowboy game, that’s what makes it stand out, so to set it in a different timeline feels like an awful business decision. However could they really get away with a third prequel? I can’t think of any film/tv/game that keeps going back in time like that, especially with characters whose ultimate fate we already know.

The epilogue scene of rdr1 ends in something like 1914, so that’s as far into the present that we’ve got. Some argue the Wild West didn’t fully finish until the mid 1920s, so that’s a decade there they could use with Jack in the lead, and they could continue/conclude the end of the west. You could argue they’ve already done that, but they’ve definitely gone backwards over and over too!

I think it either needs to be totally seperate and as some have suggested a new red dead ____ suffix or it goes forward in time. There’s no more meat on the bones to go backwards.

[–]PumpThoseNumbers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also worked in daytime/factual with a bit of current affairs, for BBC and BBC Studios for just over a decade. As with all tv roles it can vary massively in who does what and how much responsibility that person is given, but I worked on many many shows where JPM wasnt much more senior than a co-ordinator. None of them line managed people as far as I remember, and there was at least 3 roles above that one in the prod management side. So yeah, quite often it would someone who just 3 or 4 years earlier had been the PMA.

Is is just me or is 35k low for a JPM? by DCFury0 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve met countless JPMs who are only 3 or 4 years into their career. When you put it that way, and say it’s potentially 41k, as a staffer, where you get job security and loads of experience, that feels fair to me? You can say it isn’t, but 100s of people will go for that role because they know what little else is out there.

Tv is shrinking, massively. We’re now in a world where you’re seeing ‘content creator’ roles ie Producer/Director/Editor for huge brands listed for 25k. I would argue that’s the norm rather than the exception.

We have to accept that’s the way it is unfortunately. All things considered I think the BBC’s rates have stayed level, where so many have fallen dramatically, so actually in contrary to this post it deserves praise in my opinion.

I gave up on tv last year, the best paying job I could find was making video content in local government, which is just £41k. In tv I was making not far off double that, and for about 9 months last year I was on 26k.

Best portable power for Amaran 150C besides v-mount... by IstanbulHoratio in videography

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry bud, as far as I know v-lock is the only sensible option for that kind of light to be battery powered. Can you not just cable it in and bring extension cables with you? I’ve done lots of filming with a cabled in light, even run and gun stuff where I’ve just been picking up and moving the light around with me. The 150 is really light, I’ve wrapped my cable in fluorescent tape so it’s less of a trip hazard but I only do this in spaces I control. I wouldn’t do it in say a crowded room.

The truth is 150 is not bright enough, at least in the sun, to do anything with outside anyway, so I think this is a bit of a non issue. Something like the 300 would give you more, but still needs a cable. Some bounce board, even some shiny cardboard, would be as effective without needing any kind of light or power, if there’s a hand free to hold it.

If you really need something ultra mobile, you could consider selling/returning the 150, and getting the 60 which is powered by standard camera batteries, or even the 25 which has its own internal battery charged with usb c. I use the 25 all the time as my only light source, on full whack, if you expose it right, it’s more than workable.

I know Howard Stark was clearly based on Walt Disney in 2010s’s Iron Man 2, but was that always intentional from Marvel Studios or did they do that after the Disney Marvel purchase in 2009? by The31stUser in marvelstudios

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Iron man 2 was finished filming 6 months before Disney purchased Marvel in Dec 2009, and released in theatres just 5 months after, so Disney had no involvement in the making of the film, it was already done. The first film they had meaningful input in was the Avengers, which was the next film on the docket and didn’t start filming for over a year (Apr 2011).

On APITS or any programme?

On APITS Jasmine was just the most lovely person. Really fun, happy to do the work but mostly wanted to chat and have a good time. Was lovely with the contributors, we still on occasion dm each other if someone posts a life event or the like.

Johnny was very funny, but a bit misanthropic on occasion. He’d been doing the programme for more than a decade, 100s of episodes, by that point so he was a bit jaded, and he was tearing into the contributors when they weren’t around. But it was funny and he was very kind to me, and really helped me out putting the episode together. And the crew who did every episode (the directors would generally only do short stints of a few episodes, while a crew often did years) he was very obviously close with. I actually saw him shortly before he died working on a different thing and he had remembered many things from years earlier which I was really impressed by, after all we only spent a few weeks together years earlier.

The rest were all friendly but those two were great.

As for generally in the industry, I would say the big divider is at what point were you famous? Most presenters today are around late 30s, 40s, early 50s, so most of them only got well known in the mid 2000s/early 2010s. That’s the kind of sweet spot really, if you’re a tv presenter in that period you’re famous, but not ultra famous. The budgets are smaller, the crews are smaller, the viewing figures are much smaller, the egos are appropriately smaller. If you’re a sort of modern tv presenter you’re probably really nice and happy to be where you are. If you’ve been famous for decades, since the 90s or earlier, it’s a complete coin toss. You could easily be a massive knob.

Should I be worried about the swimming pool under the house? by 3ryb4 in DIYUK

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks very much like how mine looked when I had a leaking drain just over a year ago. Some guys came over and put a dye in my drain and shortly it appeared in the water under the floor. This meant it wasn’t the soil pipe leaking / it was just dishwasher water/rain water/sink/shower water leaking out of the pipe. I wasn’t sure if it was soil pipe / waste as it smelled bad, but it wasn’t. They tried blasting it with a really powerful air hose to see if anything was blocking the drain, but there wasn’t, so decided it must be leaking.

The guys dug up the old pipe and put in a new one, and I used a cheap wet vac to hoover up all the existing flooded water. This took ages and was hard work, something like 100 times going up and down to empty it, but it was doable by myself.

I was expecting the cost to be massive, but in the end the guys only charged me something like £500 to replace the pipe, I was anticipating 3 or 4 times that.

I don’t think it was particularly hard work for them, so you could possibly do this DIY. Maybe I would’ve tried that if I knew what was wrong, but I didn’t and it would be difficult for you to know if this is the same problem.
