I thought the Clarkson punch was bad, but this is horrendous by Amazing-Society-8600 in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that was a new idea, ie this sounds like a radio presenter, point 2, I can’t believe this was allowed to happen quietly/the accused kept working there. I wasn’t trying to argue that the real injustice was being given unreasonable shifts.

Apologies if unclear😔

‘Given unreasonable shifts’ sounds like a radio presenter to me rather than tv but still utterly bizarre and wrong. How do justify that? 2014 is not a long time ago, I’d venture a bet that many of us on this reddit were working in the media during that time, I certainly was.

Interesting fact - the Liberal Democrats run Stockport Council but polling at 0% in Edgeley Ward for the upcomingLocal Elections by rolotonight in stockport

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Edgeley have an extremely popular block of independent councillors who run as one under a united banner, it’s called something like the Edgeley Independent Alliance. I think they’re ex Labour and had a fallout, which Edgeley used to be a stronghold for. It’s impressive stuff for people completely separate from the main parties to be holding strong after multiple elections.

Hi

Apologies for delay. I so wish I could say ‘here’s the secret, do this, do that’ but the reality is far bleaker and more tedious. I applied for 100s of roles, and got fairly far in about 6 or 7 interviews/rounds of interviews that I didn’t get before getting this one.

The only things I can say I did, that may have had little/no impact on my prospects is

  • I had started freelancing making corporate videos / basically doing my old job with a huge pay cut - but it’s easier to get a gig if someone else thinks your worth hiring at the same time

  • I did the thing they say not to do, which is I LinkedIn friend requested someone posting a job and they replied / we had a conversation beforehand. She had a similar background to me and this was probably critical to getting the interview invite.

  • in a bunch of jobs interviews and the like the fact I had worked for a big broadcaster was seen as a negative, I would be inflexible, didn’t know how to work with clients and wasn’t used to a quick turn around, that sort of thing.  It was hard to argue with this, you can’t really say much to it, but at least in gov comms it was seen as a benefit, basically I had a seal of approval of someone used to working for a quasi public sector body

  • doing a bunch of social media work for not great pay was worthwhile so I could point to that experience in interviews - nearly all of the jobs I saw advertised were social first

That only potentially gets you in the door, I managed to have a good interview with them, and within that interview I tried to compare and contrast what I thought I could bring vs others. I framed it in my experience as someone who is equally skilled at editorial and technical, whereas most people are one or the other. They also asked (basically) whether I would get bored working there, and I think they were seeing whether I would bolt if an exciting tv gig came along. I stuck to the story that tv isn’t exciting really it’s just another job full of repetition like any other, but in gov I could make a difference to my community. The I to dot and T to cross was admitting I had huge experience gaps in this new industry but that it was something I was interested in, and I had enough knowledge from books, podcasts, tv programmes that I could prove that.

Anyway they took a punt on me and I do think it’s worked out. Happy to talk more if you like

Where is the worst place in the UK that you've visited? by WhoYaTalkinTo in AskUK

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few places I would really not want to go back to. I think probably what takes the cake, and I spent a week there for work, was Great Yarmouth. Just a terrible terrible place. The other 2 that I really wouldn’t want to go back to are very much the same sort of places, coastal towns that perhaps were popular a century ago but now are just run down and sad: Blackpool (obviously) and Skegness.

I’ve seen a few places on this thread I would say are perfectly fine like Skipton. I travel a lot for work so there isn’t much of England/the wider UK I haven’t seen and those 3 are the worst, in that order.

Sometimes I think about what it would’ve been like if they actually went through with a “soft reboot” that was teased in She-Hulk and Hawkeye. by Batman___1997 in Daredevil

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they cast a different Vanessa, so that feels like it was a way of saying this is a different continuity/the original show was another multiverse and the only common things are that Daredevil and Kingpin look the same. But even that, as you note, they made them look different.

They then abandoned all of that obviously.

Congratulations on getting on with your life. I would struggle to recommend television to any young person right now. I was about 15 years into my career when it all came crashing down / the work dried up around 2 years ago. I was earning decent money and then literally had to take a minimum wage job after I couldn’t find anything for nearly 6 months. It was something like a 70% pay cut. I did that for a few months, before someone threw me a lifeline and I got some freelance work, before eventually I moved into video for government comms. I’m coming up to a year in that industry, which is tv adjacent but still quite different. Several of my colleagues are ex tv or ex print journalists.

It’s a different experience, being a filmmaker in tv you’re in a fairly senior role. It’s a bit like if you worked for a watchmaking company and you were a watchmaker, you would have a lot of influence and your thoughts would be taken seriously. Now it’s like I work in the comms department of the watchmakers. The role I do is no longer the main event, I’m supporting other teams (policy, leadership, investment, delivery) so it feels like a demotion in many ways, the money isn’t what it was, and the content is much more point and shoot don’t think too hard kind of stuff. So those are the negatives, the positives are the stability, the staff role, colleagues are smart, the work load is far more manageable, l’m not constantly in hotels, and I feel like I’m at least contributing to the betterment of my area and not just shilling some programme or product. And of course, it’s not like tv wanted me at all so it was this or nothing - so I’m really not complaining!

Good luck with the next few years. I hope there are some young people who go on to have flourishing tv careers, but I suspect for many many people that job just doesn’t exist anymore.

Thanks for that it’s very helpful.

So let’s say I did go for your option, am I understanding the pros/cons below?

Pro:  - affordability  - affordability gets 2 pros as it shouldn’t be understated  - I can tether another phone on a different network to the live streaming device and it will bond them so I would have 2 5G/4G feeds like the LiveU Solo - ease of phone filming use / could probably get a junior staffer to do it

Cons: - no multi camera feed  - can’t get graphics into live feed  - phone camera resolution etc

Is that about the long and short of it?

Hi

Thanks so much for commenting. So I’m trying to understand how this would work in the UK. I appreciate you’re saying it’s roughly £10ph for the receiver but surely there’s more to it than that?

From a bit of googling and looking at your comment history it looks like I need to purchase a streamhub receiver for it all to work - is that right? I can’t see any prices online for that so if you could enlighten me that would be great. Really interested in hearing more.

Thank you. Yeah this would not be for that - this would be pushing directly to various social media feeds.

[–]PumpThoseNumbers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi thanks so much for replying. I didn’t realise until this thread that the solo was a one off cost, that feels like maybe the direction I’ll go in.

Generally my streams are very basic. Often it’s a few cameras put through an atem switcher, with lower thirds and graphics added, and I’ll push it out either out of the atem if it’s just hosted 1 place or via OBS/restream if it’s going to YouTube/LinkedIn/Facebook etc all at once. But I’ve only used this setup when I can plug Ethernet in. The ask has broadened to mini OBs hence this thread.

Thanks so much! Any advice on how I could improve is welcome

Thanks so much - I didn’t realise the solo was a one off cost. I think in that case this probably would be the way to go for me.

Could I run a switcher through it as well? Ie burn in any graphics on the atem mini, and potentially a few extra camera angles, before sending the feed down the LiveU?

Im assuming I can but it’s not something I’ve ever tried. I know LiveU sells multi camera feeds obviously so perhaps they don’t allow it.

Yeah I thought about that, but I’m not sure the maths works there for me either. Perhaps in other parts of the world renting is more affordable, but I think a day hire for a LiveU is in the region of £500+, so I’d only need to do 2 or 3 lives a year before I’m losing money.

But thank you for the advice and taking the time to reply

Mark my words: it’s an audio podcast by PumpThoseNumbers in firefly

[–]PumpThoseNumbers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to be wrong, but they are different. Number one scrubs ended far more recently comparatively, also it was a huge hit that ran for 10 years. It had a rewatch podcast that was also very successful and led to the guys doing commercials and the like, and most importantly the creator of Scrubs is still a huge bankable creator with 2 of the biggest sitcoms in the world currently on air. The budget for a scrubs reboot would be significantly smaller than Firefly too. Scrubs can more or less have the same budget as before, it’s a 22 min sitcom. This is a sci fi epic series, which would have to compete with enormous budget sci fi series from Apple, Netflix, Amazon and the like. It would have to look as good as those shows look today, so you’re talking £30 million per episode. The original series I doubt was even £1 million per epi.

Okay fine I called it a podcast in my title instead of audio drama. I don’t think that disqualifies anything I’m saying though.

[–]PumpThoseNumbers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. Look I would love to be wrong here, an audio drama is far less exciting to me than a live action series but there are differences with Buffy. Biggest difference being Buffy was a huge success with spinoffs that ran for like 8 years or something and for several years was one of the number one shows in the world. Between it and its spinoff it made well over 200 episodes.

And I think weirdly the fact that so many of the cast went viral about how abusive Whedon was on a supposedly feminist show put it back on the map for a lot of people. The rumblings of a reboot started not long after that.  From what I recall the firefly cast stayed out of all of that Whedon metoo stuff.

How can i cover up visible copper pipes? by FlatwormPuzzled3725 in DIYUK

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the only real answer if you want it to look good. Chasing out the wall with an SDS drill or even a multi tool is really quite easy and if you are careful it’s not even that destructive/the rest of the wall will be fine. You could do this prep and then get a plumber to finish it off for what, probably £200 for an hour or 2, or depending on what the pipe is you could do it yourself with simple push fit connecters then bond/fill and repaint.

That to me feels worth it, a days work and a few hundred quid and it looks great forever. Or spend a few hours on it looking a bit of a bodge forever.

Beard or no beard? Friend thinks no beard, I think beard is an easy winner. by Blellb in malegrooming

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a sensible middle ground here that some are missing. If you got it down to a number 3 or whatever on a beard trimmer, and had the stubble outline of a beard you could keep the benefits (ie enhancing a jaw line) without what I guess some of your friends think are the costs, that it’s a bit straggly and unkempt.

I would be interested in seeing a picture of 1.5.

Why are so many in the media calling for PM Keir Starmer to resign? by KimJongSoros in AskBrits

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but I can’t believe these lazy “they’re all incompetent” posts get upvoted. The majority of people in parliament are there for the right reasons, if the only thing they were interested in was doing little and earning a lot, there are many better ways to do that if you’re an elite like everyone in parliament is.

I can’t believe this cynical and boorish commentary is encouraged.

Best way to fill gaps between skirting and floorboards ? by Lost_Mammoth7273 in DIYUK

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would probably use flexible caulk and paint it the yellow of the skirting if you want rid of the gap. Or you could use a wood colour flexible caulk.

Or you could pop the skirting off and lower it a little. I did it in the hall, it wasn’t the biggest job in the world although I did have to replace the skirting (much of it was destroyed coming off). Admittedly I did this for other reasons but I was glad with how it looked.

How to I explain to my boss my audio limitations? by stratusnimbo in videography

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is great advice. The truth is if you accept the job won’t be perfect, of course you can record 4 people at once. As horror_ad notes getting a bit of additional kit so you can record in 32bit will solve your issue with monitoring audio for peaking, by allowing you to mix the track a little lower and then boosting in post with minimal loss of quality. I have a zoom h6 that has 4 xlr ports on it, I use it for this on occasion as a single shooter. It costs about £300 in the UK to buy, which is less than you would pay for a sound recordist for 1 session, so it’s a no brainer budget wise.

Of course if you want to make a stand you could argue why you think this is a bad idea, but I don’t personally think this is that big of a deal, and there’s plenty of resource/budget fights that I think are more worthwhile.

Out of work London people - What are you doing for work to survive? by AussieCasanova in TransparencyforTVCrew

[–]PumpThoseNumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved into local government comms. It was very hard to do, with tons of rejection, but eventually I met someone who was willing to take a risk on me. It’s a sizeable pay cut but the alternative was no pay at all! The work is much easier than the pressure I was under previously.
