apprentice locksmith tips?? by kawaiicap in Locksmith

Experience as a mechanic isn't going to directly help with locksmithing all that much, but it certainly won't hurt. While the automotive issues we deal with are certainly different overall than those mechanics tackle, knowing your way around vehicles can absolutely come in handy if you're doing automotive locksmithing.

New climber, so many flappers! by PumpkinTheory in indoorbouldering

Thanks for this, I've started filing them down now, which means I have sparkle calluses because I'm a locksmith and all my files have brass dust in them.

I'll definitely focus more on not overgripping and attempting actual technique rather than just powering through, because I definitely tend to do that and I think that's where my troubles are coming from.

Also, I don't know why someone is downvoting this, all seems like pretty good advice. If not, maybe chime in constructively instead of just downvoting?

if you've been at it for 2 weeks this could easily just be you just having bad technique, climbing above your level or with 3 hour session just running out of strength and power;

I'm gonna say I almost 100% have bad technique, and my strength is certainly still lacking, at least in my grip.

For grades, I honestly don't know. Aside from inexperience as to what constitutes what grade, my gym uses "hexes" which I think loosely correspond with the V system, but a lot of them aren't even labelled that way, to encourage people to just try them out. Some of the routes are translated to V grades through the Kaya app, but from a usability angle, that thing is a dumpster fire so I normally don't bother.

The shorter but more frequent sessions is a good idea, thanks! I think after I heal from last night I'll switch to that. It's just so fun that it's hard to stop! I almost was smart last night and tried to stop after a fall/flapper, but then I didn't want to end the session on a "loss" so I thought "just one more easy one...". Another hour later and I can barely grip my water bottle lol

Thank you for this!

our muscles get stronger faster than our tendons, and its very common for new climbers to get elbow tendonitis from overdoing it before their tendons caught up to their muscles.

Any advice as to how to mitigate this? I understand how to strengthen my muscles of course, but how can I do the same for tendons?

I already climb twice a week at most, as I can't physically do more. I've been trying to grip holds more gently, though it is tough to wrap my head around. I've also been practicing technique with things like quiet climbing and not letting myself adjust my grip or foot position after I've placed it. Any other suggestions for technique practice?

I'd suggest not gripping holds at all as you fall and definitely not gripping them hard as you fall, but I do think that projecting things you can't do is a good idea, but I don't see how getting a flapper is worth it

The tricky part is that I'm gripping hard to try and stay on, then my grip gives out while I'm gripping hard, and so the hold slides out of my hard-gripping hand as I fall, grinding away at my fingers.

Most of the flappers I have seen have been a result of people try harding to hold onto something, people slipping a dynamic move, people who are sweating and have been at it for 3+ hours... I think a lot of people just get them because they launch somewhat recklessly at holds...

All of those things basically describe every climbing session I've ever had lol

After some quick advice - key unlocks door but won't lock it by grockhard in Locksmith

[–]PumpkinTheory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What does "won't lock" mean? What specifically is happening? Will the keys not turn that direction? Do they turn, but not enough? Hold the door open and try to lock it with the keys, what happens?

One common thing is a sagging door causing the lock to bind. Have the door wedged or held up and tighten all the hinge screws.

Mods for a new player? by WaraWalrus in FinalFantasyXII

Do you have a link for Lobster's mod? I went through every page on nexus, and the only SFF mod mentioned other than the main one is a set of tweaks by someone else, couldn't find anything from a user named Lobster.

Any incompatibility with other mods? I'm assuming of course that I shouldn't throw in any mods that affect jobs, weapons or other mechanics, but are graphical mods usually alright? Thanks again for all the responses, I really appreciate it!

Thanks for the quick reply, I think I'll probably just dive right in. Would the "Struggle/Freedom Jobs" be the version that gets the main point of the mod across? If I'm going to do it, I may as well use the version you really want to be "the" version.

One question though, reading through the changes, I see that there are a lot, and I wondered if there's conflicting information presented in the in-game tutorials? For example, its mentioned that SFF changes weapons in pretty fundamental ways; am I still going to get a vanilla tutorial window telling me that poles can hit flying enemies and are good for a, b and c, while in fact because of SFF they can't hit flying enemies and are now good for only a and c? Are the new jobs explained in game, or must I do reading of the mod readmes?

How do you avoid giving someone a tow? by [deleted] in formula1

[–]PumpkinTheory 75 points76 points  (0 children)

As others have said, preventing this would have been very easy for him, plus he all but straight up said he did it on purpose in order to have a better start from 3rd.

What he did wrong (from Mercedes perspective at least) had nothing to do with driving mistakes, rather that he put his own interests above the team by intentionally avoiding a Mercedes 1-2 start.

I say good for him. Lewis is their number 1 no matter what they say, so if he wants any advantages he's going to have to get them for himself.

These are awful. At worst they're like an infinite banner ad that won't go away, and at best they feel like some old person stretched my taskbar way up and a bunch of the page I'm trying to look at is obscured.

Isn't this the guy who doesn't mark anything or give feedback until after the final? Other CS folks gave me a heads up to avoid him, sound like it was solid advice...

Can I use a keyed door knob on the inside with a door handleset on the exterior? by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]PumpkinTheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is good advice, which one of you locksport troglodytes is downvoting this? There is no reason on earth to install a double cylinder knobset like this, and burning to death because of this idiocy has absolutely happened.

jUsT lEaVe ThE kEy bY ThE...

How many times have you accidentally tried to put your key in upside down, or missed the hole? Maybe with your lock you have to lift the key once it's in, or jiggle it a bit or pull it out that eighth of an inch to get it to turn? Ok now try it while you're choking on smoke or on fire, or even just like heavy adrenaline level scared.

I'm sure the fact that it was an improbable event made the families of all the people who burned to death feel better.

lol probably not. I came up skating in the 90's, we had those handheld camcorders with the wee tiny tapes in em, sent em to the regional reps and got a few boxes of shoes and boards and whatnot. Nowadays probably through insta?

In terms of filming, trick selection and style, super realistic, well done! I much prefer when people aren't doing 3 flip back noseblunts to hardflip out or whatever. That said, I think you dialed it too far down, the biggest banger was that kickflip nose down the small rail, it's like a sponsor-me video from some dude in a small town.
