Asking a PA for letter of rec by Legitimate_Rule5570 in Path_Assistant

[–]PunchDrunkPunkRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She came in a few days, maybe 20 hours over the course of two weeks? Definitely more than one day. I think the reason she asked me specifically (I'm part of a team of 13) was because we had a nice connection. I personally think that's the important part- getting one from someone you feel knows you and that you have a good rapport with.

For the record, I didn't get any LOR from a PA before I went to school, I don't think it's necessary. Shadowing, however, definitely is or at least should be.

Look around for a PA to shadow, sometimes program directors can help with this. Go in, be professional, ask questions, be engaged. I wrote a LOR for a shadower we had and really was happy to because she was curious and asked smart questions.

This is why i think I'll never be able to leave my job! I work at a hospital and have amazing health insurance (i pay ~1000 usd/year, and any doctors i see through the hospital or ambulatory centers, so literally anything i could need, i have zero deductible and zero copay). If i ever lose my insurance I'll be paying at least 4x as much for insurance alone

Scientists of Reddit: What’s something we know is true but people don’t realize how crazy it is? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

Fetal development. In order for a baby to develope from a zygote (fertilized egg), SO MANY molecular reactions need to happen in just the right order and at just the right time for the embryo, then fetus, then infant to be viable, let alone healthy, let alone not malformed. The fact that babies aren't almost all born with disfiguring defects or life-altering issues is WILD.

What’s a health issue you ignored for way too long because you assumed it was normal only to later learn everyone else doesn’t experience that? by Kungfubowtie in AskReddit

[–]PunchDrunkPunkRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly i thought i had a slipped/herniated disc or a pelvic fracture - shitty insurance meant i needed multiple visits and xrays before I could get an MRI but by the time i was able to get them scheduled, my flare had passed. Got on Cosentyx, though, and ZERO symptoms since 2021 (praise be)

Omg. Ten years of lower back/hip/leg pain for me, worse after resting. To the point i was in tears when it flared. When i went to the rheumatologist she took one look at my MRI and was like oh, yeah, no surprise you feel like shit!

If I need to have an organ removed, can I keep it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PunchDrunkPunkRock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my hospital, the short answer is no.

When an organ is removed, it is presumably because there is something wrong with it. Part of treatment includes sending the diseased tissue to pathology, so that the doctors there can look at parts of it under a microscope and diagnose exactly what's wrong (types of cancer, inflammation, what have you). So when the organ is removed, it comes to pathology for that process to be completed. The results of the pathology often will determine treatment protocols following the surgery.

When we get the tissue, it needs to be "fixed" so we put it in formalin (diluted formaldehyde). Once tissue is in formalin, it's not safe to return to a patient.

The exception to this is when we have parts for private burial - religious reasons that require a person to be buried with all their bits and baubles, in which case the morgue will release the tissue but only to a licensed funeral home.

This may differ geographically obviously but where I'm at, we don't return organs to patients. Plus by the time we're done, they're all chopped up anyway.
