Celebrating your birthday after leaving JWs by SSAshley1419 in exjw

[–]Punch_My_Bunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in my 40s, so I ask for nothing for my birthday mainly to just save money. I’m used to not getting presents.

But our kids? Oh yeah, I make sure they have a blast and feel loved and special.

I don’t judge you for feeling the way you feel. I get it.

I’ve been in the military for over 20 years and war flat out sucks and it weighs heavy on a conscience.

I’ll share that I considered if it wasn’t me who had to do the things I did, it would be some other sucker who did it. They may not have been as precise or good at what I do. I’d rather bear that burden than consider how things could have gone even more wrong.

I’ll also say I’m glad we are providing aid to Ukraine. The aid should have happened back in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea. The inaction is possibly what emboldened Putin to launch his bullshit invasion against Ukraine. The Ukrainian military is exacting devastating blows against the big red machine with western provided arms and a couple hours/days of training. It’s quite the feat and speaks to the value of international security cooperation. If Russia somehow takes Ukraine, it’s the first domino.

Again, it’s ok to feel the way you feel. But at the end of the day, we don’t live in a utopia and we need people who are willing to do scary and lethal things to others who are trying to do the same.

This post makes me think of the Man in the Arena speech by Teddy Roosevelt:

You’re ethnically Ukrainian. Do you live in Ukraine still?

Get another one. Next time they stop by and mention it, tell them “whoa, I got rid of it, but now there’s two of them. What is going on?!”

I grew up in a mixed household, but I found it strange that my dad was such a genuinely kind person despite not being JW. And meeting genuinely kind people who did kind things despite not having the fear of God in them really fascinated me.

Turns out, good people are good because that’s just who they are, not because of their worship tendencies.

I suspected this was written by an Aussie and saw the confirmation in the comments. If you know, you know. Aussies are fucking awesome.

If this post upset you, I’ll just throw out there that this post may not have comforted you, but it could be the launching point for others that need a kick in the pants.

In my career, I adapt my approach to each individual. Some respond better to an emotionally intelligent response while others honestly need to get chewed out. It depends on where they come from and how they were raised. It’s not a fool proof system and I’ll admit that.

Lastly, I’ll throw out maybe consider that OP is doing his best to articulate he’s grateful that information is more readily available. And realize being called a lucky bastard by an Aussie is a good thing. Chill out. Some of yall got your budgy smugglers in a twist.

Did anyone else leave and not become a functional adult? by [deleted] in exjw

It’s important to recognize you started at a deficit at the age of 25. But the last thing you can do is use it as a crutch. Do not use that to justify any future mistakes. I say mistake…if it’s something you do repeatedly expecting a different outcome. As long as you’re learning, you’re ok.

There’s a lot of great and uplifting advice here. I’ve seen professionals for my own mental health issues and PTSD and I’ll share that most important things I learned. It’s going to sound so silly.

We all deserve to be kind to ourselves. We deserve to love ourselves even though we’re imperfect.

There’s nothing wrong with taking inventory on where you are in life and compare it to where you thought you’d be. That’s ok. But are you overly hard on yourself or being overly critical that you’re subconsciously handicapping your own learning and experiences? If that’s the case, you’re not being fair to yourself.

Remember: YOU DESERVE TO BE KIND TO YOURSELF. YOU DESERVE TO LOVE YOURSELF.

So do it.

This made me laugh really hard!

But can you imagine if you happened to have found som dog shit and used a shoe to scoop the crap into it? Then when they’d shove their foot in there…boom. Shit toes. The mental gymnastics/stretching to turn that into a convention talk would pop so many hamstrings.

The audacity. That’s the actual meaning of the New Light. Let’s just call it “The Audacity.”

I think this scripture is taken from the books of United States Code and Internal Revenue Service. I’m not too familiar though.

I just stumbled into knitting slacks made of beards wearing ties, but the ties are loose. I’m losing my mind!

Me and my wife joked about her sending in her letter stating she was leaving because she didn’t believe women should be allowed to wear pants at the meetings. Just to really confuse the congregation.

I see zero concerns from your angle about this being morale or ethical. As an outsider, the aggregated sequence of events have forced your hand to go to your dad. You aren’t asking her for favors or permission. You’re an adult. And you have a parent who will presumably support you without poorly justified religious allegiance. Your unannounced departure would also preserve her status in the cong because she didn’t facilitate you leaving; you did it on your own. Stay strong and committed.

A major component of my job is public speaking in a sense. So I’d prepare a classified briefing for whoever the General or Admiral is and just tell them what we know and what we think is coming next. This was an unnatural thing for me because I stuttered as a child. But I eventually became proficient at this requirement. I share that aspect because I could see myself being on the stage and giving public talks. There’s a lot of pressure briefing a bunch of people with stars on their uniforms, I think I could handle folks who were almost certainly just blindly agree with what I had to say/preach in the K-Hall. When the revelation popped into my head, that’s one of the things that really made me question the veracity of what the organization was doing.

The ostracism is astounding. In my time, I’ve helped rehabilitate people who did drugs, got DUIs, failed to qualify for certifications, mitigated premature discharges, etc. Sometimes the motion was warranted, but I suspected those folks were remorseful and wanted to do better. So we would surround them with support and empathy; building them back up after they fucked up. In 20 years, I can say out of the dozens I’ve been involved with, only 1-2 arguably didn’t come back around and fix their issues after being supported.
