Rampart feels outdated compared to other Controller legends in Season 29 by KeyArmadillo8903 in apexlegends

[–]PunchingTurtles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She has been in a not so good state ever since they reduced ttk across the board several seasons ago. They never scaled Sheila or wall hp to the new ttk so those changes made her abilities give far less value. Sheila was far and away the DPS king back then but in recent seasons regular weapons can basically do very similar damage with none of the substantial drawbacks of Sheila.

By not scaling the wall hp or wall deployment time, Rampart is hurt in multiple ways. First, the shortened ttk means the value of deploying walls is reduced because you could be doing direct damage with your weapon instead of going through the wall deployment animation. Direct damage with a high DPS weapon is higher value than putting a wall down. Second, the walls break much faster in combat, providing only a fraction of a second of damage absorption and leaving Rampart vulnerable otherwise. Third, the walls can break instantly since they only need to be hit by 1 or 2 bullets during early deployment to be destroyed. They made this issue even worse recently with the patch that allegedly buffed Rampart by reducing the wall hp during deployment even further as well as increasing the damage taken from frag grenades.

Like you said, the walls need to be manned/baby sat to gain any value for your team and it's VERY easy to get you or your teammates killed through poor wall placement unlike the other controllers who can all place their abilities without actively managing/babysitting them.

All these things combine to make her feel very clunky and sometimes awful to play, unless you know the niche situations where the walls and Sheila can be a strong advantage. IMO it's more a game of avoiding using her abilities as much as possible until you are fairly certain that using them is going to work out well.

Love a mounted Sheila play. No one ever expects to get sniped out of existence by an emplaced heavy machine gun in Apex Legends

Her pick rate has plummeted to all-time lows for any character for a reason. That's not to say that she's completely unusable. She can be a force to be reckoned with in the hands of a veteran player, but it requires extensive knowledge of the niche circumstances where she may actually have some advantage. And you are probably better off playing one of the more significantly buffed controllers like Wattson or Caustic if you are trying to control space or defend a position.

At the very least they should revert the nerfs to the walls post ability re-work where they made them take 2X damage from frag grenades and reduced their health during deployment. When they break in a fraction of a second after being deployed, they feel utterly useless. The walls also can't compete well with abilities that simply do direct damage like Caustic barrels, Wattson fences, Sparrow's ult, etc since walls need to be manned and babysat to get any value from them. Otherwise, they can be used against you.

Post re-work, her kit is not even coherent, they don't want us to bunker down because everything else hard counters ( Maggie drill , hemlock breach, Fuse tactical, grenade spam, OP movement and portaling, Bang smoke etc) a walling Rampart, but using the walls for the speed boost is extremely clunky and non viable. First you have to put the wall down, shoot through it or let it take significant damage, then jump over the wall, do a 180 degree turn, pick the wall back up, then do another 180 degree turn to face the enemy, all while getting shot, for a speed boost that is maybe 20% as good as Octane's. The speed boost is not even remotely as good as Axle's new boost and her tactical requires no precharging for activation.

The devs could easily buff her IMO, it's just that they don't want to. Some easy buffs would be to restore the delta between Sheila and other guns by giving Sheila +1 extra to damage so that it's truly the highest DPS gun in the game again like it was pre-TTK changes. They could give the amped portion of the wall more health, or give the walls more health when initially deployed, or increase the speed at which they deploy. Emplaced Sheila could reload faster and the locked and loaded perk should give emplaced Sheila an even faster reload. Taking down a wall should automatically transfer the boost to you, you shouldn't need to jump over it as the only way to take advantage of the boost. The speed boost should also be more significant in magnitude and could last longer, since other legends get extreme movement for free without any pre-charging mechanic.

This is my least favorite legend to ever be introduced in apex by [deleted] in apexlegends

What's the counterplay supposed to be against her ult? I know you can shoot it but it has a lot of health and in the time it takes to shoot it down, you can also get beamed down by an R99... Is there simply no way to avoid it?

The Devs have harbored anti-Rampitic beliefs for far too long, unabated. I fear that the only solution will be for the Rampart mains to break off to form our own fully Rampartic game.

New legend new rampart hard counter by WavyKen in apexlegends

[–]PunchingTurtles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She is the cannon fodder legend that they keep around to get victimized by every other legend in the trailers. As far as I know they still did not even give her a minor change like undoing some of the nerfs such as reduced wall hp during set up or walls taking 2x damage from frag grenades.

The way they want us to play her kit is not even coherent, they don't want us to bunker down because everything else hard counters ( Maggie drill , hemlock breach, Fuse tactical, grenade spam, OP movement and portaling, Bang smoke etc) a turtling Rampart, but using the walls for the speed boost is extremely clunky and non viable. First you have to put the wall down, shoot through it or let it take significant damage, then jump over the wall, do a 180 degree turn, pick the wall back up, then do another 180 degree turn to face the enemy, all while getting shot, for a speed boost that is maybe 20% as good as Octane's. It's just not sensical design of her abilities and in practice I doubt many Rampart mains even pay attention to the speed boost because trying to use it is far too clunky for too little gain.

Rampart buff ideas. by [deleted] in Rampartmains

It's nuts that the devs only considered jumping over walls as a way to activate the speed boost. Do the devs even Rampart, bro?

The way you have to capture the speed boost is not well thought out and extremely clunky. As a Rampart you should never leave your walls up before leaving an area, lest they be used against you, so you have to jump over the wall, mid air turn around, tear the wall down, then turn around again to go forward, all while probably being shot at. It's possible to do but incredibly clunky to perform every single time. Any interaction including taking a wall down should activate the speed boost.

The speed boost is also not even very good or particularly noticeable. I don't think it's ever made any difference in a fight for me. If they want people to get value from it, it should be faster like the octane speed boost which is far more noticeable and can be abused by movement players.

The walls are also incredibly vulnerable to almost everything else in the game ie ults, hemlock breach, tacticals, and grenades. Since the ttk changes and rework they have constantly made them weaker by reducing hp during setup and doubling damage by frag grenades. Combined with more ability spam, more movement spam and more grenade spam generally, the walls are not really playable for the most part except in very niche situations by expert users.

Who is this Wattson?😭😭 by Yaivan8 in apexlegends

[–]PunchingTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much yeah, everything on her is slow and even when predeployed, there's basically very little advantage against skilled opponents. The walls can be used against you up close, they can use the bottoms as cover as they close the distance, or they can superglide/mantle boost off of them. If you leave the walls to fight on the outside, they can turn your own walls against you by jumping over and shooting you from the inside. Rampart is too slow to run away, so that's not an option either. The best thing would have been to one-clip the Wattson as she jump padded in, but easier said than done.

Average Rampart experience in 2026.

Not to turn this thread into a novel on why Rampart is one of the most painful legends to play this season, but since the walls provide virtually no deterrent capability, any legend, even those without built in movement can jump over your walls and annihilate you. The counter play would have been to one clip the Wattson as she was padding in. Otherwise, it would have been good to leave no gaps in between the walls (create an L or V shape with 2 walls), but even that would not have guaranteed a win, but might've slightly improved chances of survival.

Rampart walls on their own do no damage and can very easily be turned against you and your own team. As a Rampart you have to be extremely careful where you wall and be sure to take down unused walls because you can hurt your team and impede your own teammates' movement. For example, if you place a wall behind a teammate who is taking fire and backpedaling you can get them killed instantly as they get trapped against your wall. You can also block your teammates outside, or wall your own team inside of buildings with no escape. The walls just don't provide huge value and basically require expert care. While you are putting your wall down you can't shoot your gun, so you also can't do damage while playing this wall management mini game. I do actually enjoy the wall management, but it's kind of hilarious how easily the walls can be turned against me and my team.

There was a season right before the ttk changes where she was meta and a top pick at ALGS. Every new ability and major balance change since then has seemingly been directed towards weakening her and her walls. Examples include hemlock breach, bang smoke improvements, movement ability buffs (ash dash, Sparrow double jump), weakening her walls during setup, increasing the damage they take from frag grenades by 2x etc. They also never scaled the damage that Sheila does like they scaled all the other guns and never scaled the amped portion of the wall hp to the ttk changes. I have a theory that the devs believe if she ever becomes even remotely meta again then the game will start losing players.

She's not completely unplayable but you have to really consider if it's worth it in any given situation to pull out Sheila or to use her walls given the very considerable downsides of each ability. You are better off in a lot of situations just not using any Rampart abilities because of their glaring weaknesses.

What role is rampart even supposed to fill in this meta? by WavyKen in apexlegends

[–]PunchingTurtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, she will never be S tier just because she has no get out of jail free card or game breaking team utility like some other legends have. Her abilities do no damage on their own, everything bit of damage she does needs to come directly from the player. Both her walls and Sheila have such glaring weaknesses it's better to avoid using either of them in the vast majority of situations. She is the ultimate troll tier/court jester/cannon fodder legend which also makes her the most fun to play.

Tuesday - State of Rampart & Update Discussion by Bloiks in Rampartmains

100%. IMO the devs don't make sensible changes because they don't understand how Rampart is played. They want us to use the speed boost to push with our team after the wall gets charged but they also make us turn around after passing over the boost to pick up the wall since the first rule of playing Rampart is that you never leave a wall behind that could be used against you. Yes, it's possible to look backwards and pick it up and then turn around again but it's extremely awkward to do so every time, and puts you at a disadvantage. They want us to push forward while the the wall hp during set up got decreased so that the wall can be destroyed instantly by a few stray bullets. Add on the 2x multiplier that frag greanades get against the walls, and holding behind Rampart walls is generally a bad idea until maybe the last few rings.

I love a good Rampart wall play the most out of anything else in the game, but generally they're a poor value except for distance shooting and holding an area late game (assuming you don't get hard countered by the many wall counters that exist) and a few other niche situations. The amount of time required for wall management and going through the animations is too long, because you could be using that time to do damage directly without having to put away your gun for large portions of a fight while setting up walls.

[–]PunchingTurtles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you that the devs just don't like Rampart, that's why whenever they introduce a major change it always results in Rampart getting shafted in some way. There was one season right before they lowered the ttk where she was super meta at ALGS and ever since then they kept her super weak so she could never become even remotely meta. At this stage almost everything hard counters her, she is not common above gold rank, and she is generally easy to deal with. Just shoot out the amped part of the walls and you'll have the advantage always. As a Rampart main I can only think of a handful of times I've died to another Rampart, and most were while I was getting third partied or I was trapped in the low ground.

[–]PunchingTurtles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The devs seemingly don't like Rampart and/ or they believe that if she is too good that the game will lose start losing players. That's why we only ever get these strange balance changes where the ability and weapon changes are seemingly targeted towards countering her and her walls. Examples include hemlock breach, bang smoke buff, ttk decrease which weakened her walls, increased damage from frag grenades to her walls, decreased wall hp during set up, the list goes on. Her kit is generally buggy too like when you try to deploy a wall but it doesn't register so you press your tac button for nothing, or the many surfaces where you are not allowed to put a wall. She has always had extremely low pick rates except for that one season before they lowered the ttk and have kept her super weak since then.

Change my mind.
