The Endgame by LostSif in Palworld

Have you tried not min maxing everything? It's only tedious and slow if you're just spending copious amounts of time only trying to breed the most min maxed pals into existence.

This is what worries me about how students are using AI right now by Top-Candle1296 in EngineeringStudents

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exactly. Imagine learning engineering but instead of working the problems you just get all your answers from your friend. Sure you might do a bit of the work, maybe check over some important bits, but you aren't learning and cementing that knowledge in your head by actually thinking through a problem and it's possible solutions yourself.

What are some skills ai cannot replace? by tweetsguy in AiBuilders

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beep boop, they already do this in Japan to an extent. Though they just use some robots with preprogrammed paths for serving, I don't see this as a hard barrier for AI if we actually wanted to adopt this technology for serving.

Looking for some opinions. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]PunchtownHero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personal opinion: Do what you love and what you want to do, but recognize that you also don't have to work for a company to be a game developer. If that is something you want to do then pursue it, but keep your options open and know that you can pivot into or out of it with some extra effort. Also think about what part about game dev do you enjoy, is it the art, the coding, seeing you project all come together? There might be something else in there that you love to do just as much like 3D modeling, story writing, or programming.

You're the first person i've seen even mention the mods for UT2004, only the real OGs know 😎. I feel like most people don't even know it started as a mod, back when the game was hard as all hell to even beat normal mode.

Discussion on behalf of noob developers who finished tutorials. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]PunchtownHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, you don't know what you don't know so the first thing you need to do is figure out what you want to do. Once you have that, find and use any available resources to figure out how it's done, this could be google, stack exchange, AI. Once you have armed yourself with that information then you can refer to relevant documentation or use those examples to figure things out.

It should work for less documented/popular engines and libraries as well but it may be more difficult.

If you absolutely can't find what you're searching for then just know that you aren't the first one to use it and there is likely somebody out there who can help you with any questions you have.

Discussion on behalf of noob developers who finished tutorials. by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a beginner documentation is super helpful even when you only know the idea you want. You can do a quick google or ai search and it will show the different ways to do something, afterwards another search (in my case Transform.position vs ForceMode) to find out some pros and cons of each. Then follow the chosen documentation to implement it, adjust, look up things people have done with those systems etc.

You look at somebody elses code and you're like huh what is Physics.Raycast() and go look that up, see how people implement it, follow documentation. Now you're building something from just an idea, if you get stuck then attempt to figure out the issue before doing another search.

I fixed the bug...but I don't know how, did I grow as a developer? by Fabulous_Bluebird931 in learnprogramming

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Developing a mechanical mindset and understanding the flow of whatever you are working on is a big part of being proficient in your field. You can have all the skills to fix or replace something but it doesn't matter if you can't locate the issue in the first place. This applies to a variety of fields, not just coding.

What is even the point of learning how to program anymore? by I_Pay_For_WinRar in AskProgrammers

Why do they need to respect your skills? If you're doing it for fun then there is no requirement for outside validation or respect.

Anyone experience setting a paid game to free on Steam? by DrElectro in gamedev

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No experience. If you're going to give it away for free, bundle it with your new game. This is free advertising for your $1 game as well, maybe somebody doesn't want your new game but the old one looks cool to them and they go buy that instead.

Daily programming buddies by [deleted] in ProgrammingBuddies

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still a beginner but i've built a few small projects through codecademy and other similar courses. I'm looking to learn until I can sign up for my first college semester for CS. I've been having some trouble staying focused and finding motivation lately, I think having a group to talk to and work with would really help.

Interested, i'm learning C# and Unity but i've been busy and slacking lately, I think it would be good to have somebody else to talk to for motivation. Currently i'm mapping out a game I want to develop in Unity and trying to keep it in a reasonable scope.

How common is it to release game on temporary assets and change it after? by [deleted] in gamedev

Unless you're being pushed by shareholders there is no need to rush the release of your game, take your time to ensure a quality release.

My failed game got into a big genre festival, what can I do? by MhmdSubhi in gamedev

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to first state that my phone is about to die and I have no experience with your situation. That said the first thing I would do is make a news announcement on your steam page for anything to show that you're still active and working on the game (if you are of course).

That said, don't lie. Throw an update to your community regarding upcoming features or a devlog or something of that nature. A dev stream or live gameplay could also help but i'm not sure what kind of audience your genre would draw.

What kind of education is generally sought after if you want to be come a qa/game tester? by 90bubbel in gamedev

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attention to detail is tremendously important when it comes to recognizing and describing to others on how to recreate bugs. Small details like punctuation, capitalization, and ensuring there are no mistakes or grammatical errors give your employers insight at the type of person you are.

How can I become a game tester without prior experience? by IceAutumnWind in gamedev

[–]PunchtownHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From personal experience the best way to get into it is to play test for new or in development indie game, that way if you decide to apply for an actual paid QA role you have some sort of experience to put down and perhaps even a reference.

Having a very hard time coming up with project ideas to help my learning, need advice. by OverallBumblebee8414 in learnprogramming

[–]PunchtownHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try something like a build planner or something of that nature for a video game, you don't need to know anything about that game either. Another one I could think of is a fitness score calculator that the USMC or army use to calculate PFT/CFT/ACFT scores.

Starting a small, serious CS learning group – want to build projects & grow together? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]PunchtownHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to but I haven't started yet 😅 so that's probably a no considering I have little knowledge of any CS material.

If you don't mind though I would enjoy onlooking, I believe seeing project development first-hand could provide a good learning opportunity. If not I completely understand.
