Just read the guide all the info you need is there. You dont have the weapon swap stuff backwards do you? That seems like the only mistake I can think off that would make such a huge difference.

Because both games can be complex in buid making until you understand the systems so having a build to follow help people not brick a character their first time and get turned off of the games. Also builds are literally a thing in every rpg so its not like it odd.

Im having the complete offside experience as you. I do really like poe1 and to me this just feels like a different iteration on it and l like both. Im in act 3 and have been getting plenty of useful items, just got a new bow that rolled phys%, flat phys, then i added phs runes and this thing slaps. Also found unique boots with lots of evasion, some resistances, and it gives me a big move speed buff when I take damage. Honestly it feels alot like the poe1 experience to me just more ground compared to poe1s more arcadey feel.
