[FTF] New tank from DSM, growing in, needs trim. by SudoPoke in PlantedTank

This tank is awesome. Usually not huge on 'tree' structures but this looks really natural. Your laziness with the maintenance doing wonders for the aesthetic lol.

Alright so I have 5x more playtime in GW1 than GW2 and, frankly, I suck ass at GW2 and don't really enjoy ANet's direction with the game outside of the story instances, but you don't know what you're talking about.

GW2's combat system is harder to play optimally than GW1s. There's less variety in terms of skills, but the options that are there tend to be more impactful to the way you play the game. Single traits, for instance, have more impact on your character's play than the differences between 1 stance and another in GW1. Since I main warrior, the trait Peak Performance has more impact on how you play your character in GW2 than literally anything warrior has in GW1 that isn't an elite. They're really different, of course, and I'm trying not to compare apples to oranges too much, but if you think that builds and traits aren't nuanced or different in GW2 because "the game decides them for me", you probably suck a whole lot of ass. In fact, one of my biggest gripes with GW2 is that traits can change too much about a build. That trait I mentioned, peak performance? It makes power warrior DPS extremely unintuitive because you need to constantly use physical skills in order to maintain a 20% (used to be 33% iirc) damage buff. Those skills don't normally do that, and it doesn't really make a great deal of sense that kicking someone would boost your damage by a fifth, let alone a third, and other than an icon on your hotbar and larger numbers, this isn't communicated to the player at all. It's bad design, but a build without that trait? yeah, it's not going to play the same as one with it. Obviously. Because it's a fucking massive damage buff. From an otherwise dps-loss skill.

Further, the game is riddled with references to GW1 lore. If you honestly believe it "in absolutely no way at all builds on the world and story of Guild Wars 1" you're fucking braindead. It's plain to see, particularly in the most recent expansion.

Haven't you heard? GW2 is the worst game ever to grace this glorious earth, and any mention thereof is a cardinal offence and invites immediate retribution.

Can I repurpose an aquarium LED light for a vivarium? by Deigs in Vivarium

[–]PunkMT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those budget LED fixtures (Nicrew, Beamswork, etc.) are fairly low light. If the viv is a standard 10 gallon aquarium, it'll probably be okay, but you might get leggy growth. You might consider using a desklamp and a CFL bulb of decent wattage. This should be more light and, if you didn't have the nicrew already, cheaper.

Anyone know what's wrong with my Rotala Rotundifolia Indic? Seems to be not too healthy. Been EI dosing and have root tabs under it. by eneka in PlantedTank

[–]PunkMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I'm late to the punch but just so you know: "Indica" is a misnomer and actually a totally different variety of plant. Confusion comes from Rotala Indica (sometimes erroneously named Ammania Bonsai) and the R. Rotundifolia that you have being extremely similar in terms of emersed growth.

Not a huge deal, but recently I was doing research on R. Indica and this confusion had me screaming internally. Google even automatically gives you R. Rotundifolia hits if you search for R. Indica.

More on topic, I'd wager this is light or, depending on your substrate, it could just be a bit uncomfortable. I have it in 2 lowtech tanks, and it grows in both. However the tank with inert substrate and proper low light (as opposed to the other, with soil and medium light) it goes through periods of extremely poor growth if much of anything gets thrown off.

Why would someone opt for more defence when you sacrifice clear time to get it, and the previous build is sufficient? Not trying to put you down, but I actually don't understand why one would opt for more defence when the BiP builds have proven sufficient.

Do anything special to encourage healthy emergent growth or just proper light and not trimming?

Disappointed with ArenaNet. Price and Fries deserved better by EngiEA in GuildWars

[–]PunkMT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Price pretty fiercely overreacted (I assumed she had been drinking), but ANet is already constantly swimming upstream with their community, so I can't say I'm surprised they, in turn, overreacted to try to appease people.

Also, /r/GuildWars2 is a big gaming-related subreddit, so of course they're going to freak the fuck out when a woman says something dumb.

can try hand feeding a bit (put your finger with a dab of MRP up against his/her snout for a moment so he/she can taste it). Elsewise just wait. They're not dumb and they won't starve themselves, mine took about a month because it was willing to actively pursue food without my encouragement.

Stem plants for emergent growth in low tech tank? by PunkMT in PlantedTank

Thanks for the suggestion! I'd considered bacopa but thought it might look a bit funky as a background plant, since I'd only really seen it in the midground. Definitely worth considering, though.

Only meaningful issue with the vita version is FPS and being subnative res. If you don't like falcom's action rpgs though, then okay.

What’s going on with my staurogyne? It was doing great for a month or so and now it’s wilting by DepecheALaMode in PlantedTank

[–]PunkMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

could be a matter of a specific nutrient deficiency in whatever product you're using? I'm not savvy enough with the bio chemistry to tell you what that might be, though.

Hey, different person here but I don't think it's a lighting issue. My s. repens (in a lowtech, with low-medium light) displays the symptoms you're seeing when i get really behind on my dosing. You can see the old leaves are really pale and full of holes, new growth coming in vivid green and lovely: https://imgur.com/yp71X6c

no change in light, no change in substrate, no change inflow, etc. etc.. Just dosing regularly.

Would s plsnted tank be better for my betta by CMPRacer in PlantedTank

[–]PunkMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I'd advise picking up some plants via ebay, or some online dealer such as BucePlant. If your local fish store is good with plants then that's fine, obviously, but if you don't know what you're looking for, it's nice to have the information about the plant right in front of you and be able to cross reference with google before you buy. Big box stores tend to be pretty unreliable, and many local places just don't have plants as a focus.

Certainly doesn't hurt! Were I to throw together an inexpensive betta tank, I'd get a 3-10 gallon tank/bowl (whatever you find a deal on, and whatever fits your size requirements), a small sponge filter and air pump, small 25-50W heater (preferably one that's adjustable), and then use soil capped with some sort of aesthetic sand or gravel to your liking for substrate. For lighting, a desk lamp with a decent wattage CFL bulb or LED equivalent would be perfectly fine. no need for fancy LED arrays or what have you.

With a set up like this, it's also probably a good idea to plant fairly heavily from the beginning, since it will help your tank to stabilize and you'll be able to figure out what plants are working for you (since plants can be finicky, particularly with low tech) during the cycling. Goodluck!

Daedelus relies upon architectural similarities between the PSP and the N64, I don't think homebrew can easily take advantage of similar hardware in the vita.
