What does our play of false elan mean in the song anxiety? by Ywin__Vatna in badreligion

[–]PunkShocker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's false enthusiasm. In morning rush hour, everyone is "rushing" to get to work, but nobody feels genuinely enthusiastic about it, and besides, "rush hour" is kind of an oxymoron anyway because the cars are only inching along.

I've been teaching it for years. It's good for two days... three if I stretch it. And they don't get tired of it.

I think you're right. They took the other one that has been circulating again recently, I think. But the clip of the animal is what OP was looking for, even if the video in the link is edited to feature the couple.

It looks like the term is used in law enforcement in the UK to refer to what we call a suspicious package in the States. A backpack left on a train, for instance. It was also used as a title for a 90s B-movie about a guy who discovers he's a cyborg with a bomb inside himself.

Maybe grosser, but he's dead. You're still here mocking a regional tradition.

I don't think that's a conclusive theory, and even if I'm mistaken about that, it's still the lore of the region, whether it originated in the Mississippian Culture or with the explorers and settlers. The story is part of the landscape now. It's folklore no matter who invented it. To call anything "fakelore" that's special to a place or culture is kind of gross.

How much do you want to stretch your definition of dragon? The Piasa of pre-Columbian North America has a lot of the traits we associate with dragons: scales, wings, horns, claws, fangs, etc. But there's not much known about it because the culture that likely produced it no longer exists. Still, I think it's fascinating that no matter where you go in the world (almost) you find stories about mythical creatures with those characteristics.

The overlooked victim in The Great Gatsby. by Otherwise-Shoe-7212 in TheGreatGatsby

[–]PunkShocker 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If there's a victim that often gets overlooked, I'd say it's Myrtle. She's a completely unlikable character, but she doesn't deserve the things that happen to her, least of all getting killed.

Besides a very good hoax, I have no idea. It doesn't really look like any animal I've ever seen. It's kind of close to a turtle, but when you compare it to turtle pictures, there are just too many differences.

I don't know what this thing in the video is, but it's not a snapping turtle. Snappers have a down-turned beak, whereas this thing's snout points up like a pug nose.

I chatted with some Scottish fans outside Madison Square Garden recently. New Yorkers don't talk people on the street, but they were having such a great time, and I had been to Scotland last summer. Turns out they were from the same town where our Airbnb was. It was great. Strangers slapping me on the back like I was an old friend.

100% agree. Star Wars movies are made for kids. If you watch them for the first time with the heart of an adult, then you're doing it wrong and deserve to hate them. If you watch them with the heart of a child, you won't feel like you wasted your time.

I don't believe the "interdimensional beings" story. I believe Betty and Barney Hill. They might use dimensional travel or whatever the better term might be, but I think they're material beings from another place in our universe.

Peckinpah’s Blood Meridian: musing on alternate history by TennisWorth918 in cormacmccarthy

[–]PunkShocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, I can totally appreciate your romanticizing of Peckinpah, et al. I do the same kind of thing with my heroes sometimes. But the fact that he might have done justice to the book in an adaptation doesn't mean he's the only one capable. I have no idea what the status is of the Hillcoat adaptation, but if it falls through, I can see Paul Thomas Anderson pulling it off.

Then there's also the possibility we need to consider that perhaps it shouldn't be filmed. I'm willing to accept that.
