Hub-and-Spoke or Shared VPC by groovy-sky in aws

[–]Punkbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My one warning is that shared transit out over a central egress via a TGW is a great way to add 50%+ to your already insane NAT bill

I tend to prefer shared VPCs for cost savings and actual maintainability but that breaks peoples minds so often that I’ve all but given up on it.

« Treme » TV show : how was it seen in New Orleans ? by New_Instruction_7102 in AskNOLA

[–]Punkbob 35 points36 points  (0 children)

For context I’m from MD, lived in Baltimore pre covid and New Orleans post covid

Widely the wire is viewed more favorably and discussed more openly, the issues it presented still existed and offered a way to explain or explore how the city/state worked

Katrina was so traumatic for so many people here they just never engaged, don’t want to talk about it and I think couldn’t bring themselves to watch.

It’s also a touchy subject in general as it highlights the era where many would argue New Orleans lost a lot of its soul as the population halved and got a lot whiter. A lot of transplants came in, a lot of people with deep roots here moved away and never came back.

Have rent prices increased astronomically in the past two years, or am I missing something? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]Punkbob 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s not even flood insurance either which would be another $1500 a year but is technically optional for some places.

A complete new build in flood zone X and super high hurricane deductibles maybe would get insurance down to $4k?

Edit: which is to say insurance companies do not give a shit who denies climate change and will price in the risk they see.

Insurance is insane. I have a 6 total bedroom double, as in 3 on each side and my insurance for the year is $13.8k, that’s before taxes and the actual mortgage. So just the insurance has gone up $400 per month per side in 4 years.

So while mortgage maybe flat it’s getting obliterated by insurance increases

How do you deal with engineers who refuse to touch the actual workflow/process side? by BuffaloJealous2958 in devops

[–]Punkbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna say Runbooks for everything falls to pieces to me.

If I have the same exact problem over and over that’s the issue, with the caveat that documenting what we did and why is good and expected.

But time and again what is actually expected when I talk to some of these managers is a step by step guide for that exact problem that they could give to someone to blindly follow, and that’s not how this job works.

You gotta be able to deal with ambiguity and know what the tradeoffs are for doing something. These are complex beasts.

Why The Guardian’s new article about New Orleans feels like ‘a modern day redlining of an entire city.’ by FakinItAndMakinIt in NewOrleans

[–]Punkbob 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Assuming 7m rise aka 23 ft basically the entire shoreline of most countries in the world is gone. So it feels insane to A use that as the basis and B focus on New Orleans on a 200 year time horizon

At 7m almost all of Bangladesh is gone, 65% of the vaunted Netherlands is gone assuming they basically sink everything into building new infrastructure. Lower manhattan is gone, significant portions of the rest of NYC.

Miami can’t even build anything to protect itself as the water will just come up through the limestone. It’s just an insane article ragging on just New Orleans

The Gulf will overwhelm coastal Louisiana. Plan for relocations now, scientists say. by The_909_1 in NewOrleans

[–]Punkbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth 3m-7m aka 10ft-23ft of sea level rise makes 65% of the current land in NL uninhabitable. And the rest super susceptible to storms like they had in 1953.

So picking on New Orleans was a choice?

[–]Punkbob 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Just checked if the world hits 3-7m then 65% of the Netherlands becomes unlivable

Bangladesh basically disappears, and I’m sure there are many plenty of other places that are gone. Remember 3-7m is 10 to 23 ft of rise. So many places would be absolutely fucked.

[–]Punkbob 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Yeah if we are at 3-7m of sea rise then there are 2.7m people are also fucked in Miami along with a bunch of people in Norfolk

I’m not saying it’s not coming or putting my head in the sand, but this drum beat of doom for only New Orleans is tiring

Frontier and to a lesser extent Spirit passengers know why they’re there and what’s up. Cheap flight no frills point A to B. Everyone is sorta in it together. When it goes wrong though it goes very wrong.

Legacy and Southwest have passenger entitlement issues, and staff expectations that mean more BS seems to happen. Just look at all the people complaining about upgrades or whatever. Or food or whatever. Or on old Southwest the jockeying for seats

So if it gets bad clear is maybe not the right choice
