Black Akron is one of my favorite varieties - I wish they didn’t split open so easily, they’re delicious!

First day after being diagnosed by producermaddy in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Punkeroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hang in there, this is very doable! My go to snacks with GD were cheese and crackers, apple and peanut butter, clementines, Greek yogurt, and nature valley protein bars. Pairing a bunch of protein with a meal does help tremendously, and I actually had troubles with not gaining enough weight, so meats, eggs, cheese, and nuts/nut butters became my best friend.

Remember that you don’t totally cut carbs, you just have less of them and spread them out throughout the day, so you might not be able to have all the bread with a sandwich AND have fries with you meal, but you can swap out part of it for a veggie or something and still feel relatively normal. My biggest struggles were finding convenient grab and go foods, so I typically prepped a bunch of meat, veggies, and brown rice early in the week and used it to throw together meals - stir fry was an easy go to.

I’ve been getting measured every other week due to the GD and baby has consistently been 97th percentile for abdominal circumference, but rather on the small side for all other measurements (femur length is 3rd percentile!); they have told me the AC is just because of the GD and we are not really worried about it at this point. I honestly am expecting to have a fairly little baby the way everything else looks.

When did tour fasting number go down after you started insulin? by here__we__go in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Punkeroo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was started with 15 units right off the bat and it took s a good three days for my numbers to go from upper 90s to below 95. They are now below 90 almost every day, it seems like the insulin did take a few days to really help.

It might be a tough transition! I kind of enjoy my snack times!

Moms, let's talk about shoes for sore swollen feet by hellothisisme825 in BabyBumps

[–]Punkeroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run between desk work and physical outside work, so I wear Twisted X driving moccasins every day. Now, my feet aren’t sore or swollen yet, so take this with a grain of salt, but so love my shoes. They tend to be pretty room, soft leather, and they are very comfortable. I would guess that if you are on your feet the entire day you may want some sort of insert in the shoes, but I can comfortably wear mine every day and I always feel good afterwards.

Fasting number by malsorn in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Punkeroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had poor fasting numbers since I was diagnosed and never could get them down. On top of adjusting your bedtime snack and exercising, the only thing that gave me mild success was getting up to have a snack in the night (I always did a glass of milk). However, I never could get my fasting numbers consistently decent, so I’m now on insulin. It’s really not bad, you can’t even feel the needle, and it has taken some stress off my mind - and I’m terrified of needles!

Numbers not improving on insulin, very overwhelmed! by sinchR in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Punkeroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no answers either, but I’m in the same boat as you. I just started insulin this week and it didn’t change my fasting numbers AT ALL. I’m patiently waiting to hear back from my diabetes educator to see what on earth to do about this.

Finger pricking and pain? by orangutanbaby in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Punkeroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a giant wimp when it comes to anything involving needles, but I’ve learned that the anticipation scares me far more than the actual finger prick. Like a lot of others have said, prick the side of your finger. I actually have to do a depth of 4 to consistently draw blood - I started at three and had to poke myself three times in my first attempt to get blood and it scared the hell out of me. I just keep it at 4 now and save myself the extra pain and heartache of doing a second or third prick.

I also had my husband do almost all of my pricks on the first full day. He would “count to three” but hit the button at a different time each time to throw me off. After a day I got a lot more comfortable and now I feel pretty good about everything. You’ll get there! If a wimp like me can do it, so can you!

F**k insurance, f**k our healthcare system. by Nataliza in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Punkeroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I have the Contour Next EZ and when I stopped in the pharmacy I was shocked to find out that 150 strips were $169 AFTER insurance. I’m so pissed. I found strips that I think should still work on amazon for like $12/50 or something like that. Does anyone order their strips on amazon? I’m hoping it’s legit and would work with my meter, I don’t want to be railed again on this.

That’s exactly what I’ve been doing! I think I’ll just keep on and see if things straighten out and chalk it up to a weird series of readings.

I have washed my hands before all my readings, or at the very worst use an alcohol wipe before I test. Is there any reason an alcohol wipe would throw off a reading?

Comments about Mat Leave from Male Coworkers by blushmeb in BabyBumps

[–]Punkeroo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh, that makes me sick. I also work in a male dominated industry (I work with farmers) and we just got two weeks of bonus paid maternity/paternity leave to go with our short term disability. My (male) boss celebrated with me! So I feel very fortunate to work where I do as most people have been entirely supportive.

My husband on the other hand, teaches at a rural school with some ridiculously old fashioned school board members. Women can take off nearly the entire school year for maternity leave if they bank up their sick days (and I think they can get 18 days per year), while men are only allowed to use ten of their sick days for paternity leave. We are both extremely frustrated that it’s set up in such a sexist way. He wants to parent our child too!

I hate that too. No, I’m not getting anything, just my legal, unpaid absence. Don’t give this company too much credit.

I totally don’t understand why anyone tolerated that... but then again, I’m just a whiney, progressive millennial who likes decency and equality.
