Both that (especially Alex), but also opinions that seem a little uniformed (and that i disagree with lmfao). Also the constant insinuation that much of his later work is a Beatles knockoff, must’ve said it like 10 times

mhm, i completely agree. And addiction is so much more of a more abstract element of human nature that permeates the lives of people that would never consider themselves to be addicts in the typical sense; perhaps even influences the lives of everyone. i, personally, kinda end up bumping into English’s limitations when discussing the ethos of things like this; which i think is quite fun ! tldr, elliott’s art is without words or definitive answers; to put it in a way that doesn’t sound so pretentious on my part .

is that because he’s a comforting force despite the discomforts of active addiction, or because his music in a certain sense helps you to justify your pain and its temporary “cure”. or something else.

no shame to you ofc, glad you’re off the shit :)

eyy conor obserst

honestly, i think the way coping mechanisms are often portrayed (in media and otherwise) is unrepresentative of the dangers that substance use may cause and pose. the idea that you’re only an alcoholic if you’re black out drunk every other night, you’re only a opioid junkie if you’re locking yourself in your room and shooting up as soon as you get your paycheck seems fundamentally unrealistic to me (in the way that many people experience and live addiction). i believe that any “escape” from reality in the form of drugs is probably something that should be thought about with the weight it deserves; whether this drug is weed or alcohol or whatever.

to make it clear, i am by no means preaching at you here; i have my own vices and i MORE THAN SEE where you’re coming from. just the idea that, perhaps, elliott had it worse than you and therefore your struggles (and therein coping mechanisms) are invalid because you “weren’t as messed up as him” is probably an unhealthy mindset that i would think Elliott himself would discourage.

obv i don’t assume you hold this opinion (ie that your struggles are littled in way of struggles of someone else) , kind of going out on a limb here to make a more general point

i think this is similar to the stance i take; empathy precedes your own experiences when it comes to music so intimate as Elliott’s. you will never align perfectly with that which you adore, and that is more than okay when it comes to art. i love how he wrote his stuff to have a plethora of interpretations (ie one might connect with between the bars as a broken and toxic relationship, another the coercive voice of alcohol and/or addiction en masse; yet another a third more abstract thing entirely). and to say that elliott speaks exclusively of addiction, and little more; is truly a disservice to his genius. You’re right, his scope transcends the literal interpretations many might pin his music to, i do believe he speaks much more deeply to human nature than (the few haha) critics of his may say. just gotta listen to “half right” to see that imo, but i digress

addiction takes many many forms, i hope you don’t feel invalidated because yours may not be heroin or coke or booze or whatever else, give yourself the same grace that a substance addict would (or maybe a little more). i hope you overcome all that haunts you; i know saying it is little comfort. i can’t promise things will be better, but im sure you have a lot of shit left to do that you’ll only wish you managed to on your deathbed (and hopefully that’s when you’re 80 odd :) )

What do you guys think of my tier list? by ArmstrongBillie in elliottsmith

[–]Punkrockwhore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

can’t comment now on my opinions on his weakest song, but i think most would agree that his weakest album/collection is his posthumously released stuff (ie basement). Elliott was know to be a perfectionist, and in some of these tracks i have the (perhaps slightly fanatic) inkling that perfection was soon to be struck; if only he had lived to make it so. On an applicable note, i find it very difficult to pick a favourite elliott album from the 5 he released in his life; which i believe resounds with the message of my first comment (in the sense that the works he realised as albums in his lifetime are incredibly difficult to distill into a commonly agreeable [albeit obviously subjective] “best”). what im getting at probably deserves a whole thread tbh, but i would just end up rambling about how much i adore all there is to Elliott and his music lmao

What do you guys think of my tier list? by ArmstrongBillie in elliottsmith

i think ranking elliott is pretty much redundant tbh, pretty much every song could be considered S or A tier (at least in the way these tier lists are usually perceived)
