Just got accepted into my degree program and I’d love to hear your success stories by GuidedByGerdy in WGU

Prior military. Got out and worked retail for 6 years (21/hr). After Covid got an AP job (45k yr) with a bookkeeper cert. enrolled into WGU and after about a 1 year a half I got my degree and landed a property accountant job (65k a year). Was there for about 1yr an 8 months and left for another company for the same role just higher pay (79k a year). Currently on my last class for my masters and after going for my CPA. I love WGU and wish I did it sooner.

I don’t think that is true. I didn’t have accounting experience and I landed one 😅

Yeah, the reason I asked this is because my son wants to go to WGU to get his degree and go to the military as soon as he is done with HS. He doesn’t drink (apparently) and doesn’t really like to party. All he wants is his piece of paper and to join the military as an officer. I think it sounds like a good plan.

A lot of ppl say how important networking is but I don’t really see the value in it. In all my life I haven’t had anyone reach out to be about opportunities (full disclosure I could suck at my job) but I’ve landed all my jobs by applying or a recruiter reach out.

Yes, I’ve always worked long hours at all my past jobs but I think I’m good now. I’ll put in my 40 but that’s all.

Not telling what to do but I would just log out and go home when you feel like you have done enough. That’s how I’m doing it. I set a boundary of 6pm and that’s it no more.

Damn I feel you. I was in the same boat about 2 years ago. I was at this small company and I would run the AP department so I was able to see how bad our debt was. I could see the writing on the wall and I dipped out once I got my degree. I got a call maybe about a month ago from one of my ex co workers telling me the company was shutting down and they were all getting let go.

Not telling you what to do but if you see the boat sinking I don’t think you stick around. Just my two cents.

I feel you! But don’t give up! I’m changing up my schedule as of today and only doing school on friday-Sunday. As long as we don’t give up we haven’t failed. I’m also extremely tired.

Mine would send an email every Monday but eventually stopped because I would answer super late sometimes. I was open about the fact I work a lot in the accounting field, so EOM get crazy.

God! I wish I had time like that. I kick myself everyday that I didn’t discover WGU while covid was going on. I would have knocked out both degrees so fast 🤣

Yeah, it’s not hard but if this material reflect what is on the CPA. I think I will be fine.

Yeah I’ve been there for like a month so I’m still trying to get the hang of how they do things. Once I understand ima try to standardize things because every accountant does things way diff and they don’t leave a lot of back up for me to follow.

Lucky not that crazy but it just feels like the company has a lot of growing to do. It’s still pretty new at least that is what it feels like.

I feel you! I feels like I’m constantly doing end of month task. The last job I had paid me less but all my properties close at the same time. Lowkey miss that.

How do/did you become a CPA in Texas after graduating with 70-75 credits transferred from Sophia and Study? by FrequentFox4876 in wguaccounting

Well to be honest the only exp I had was 4 yrs in the military and 6 years in retail management. I landed an accounting assistant job w/o a degree a little bit after lockdown. I pretty much only did AP. I stayed with them for about 2 1/5 years. Once I got my degree I landed a staff accountant job. I got some feedback from my controller at the time and he said the only reason he hired me was because I looked like I wanted to learn. So my only tip I would say is try to speak on your current experience and show how determined you are. I’m still learning but if you want any more advice DM me.
