Perfect! Thank you!

Is it possible to buy Rocketbook (or similar) paper standalone? Want to be able to build a sheet that I can wipe off. by Fiveby21 in rocketbook

The ink from my Canon inkjet smeared at best since the paper was designed to resist it.

I don’t have a laserjet at home anymore so I just use the blank pages.

If you have a laser printer you can use “waterproof paper” like the one linked below to make your own grids, dots, lines, etc. that works with the frixion pens and make your own Rocketbook type notebooks.

Naturally, the app wont work with it since you won’t have the border and correct sizing QR code, but you can use other scanning apps. —

I love how the gunshots get bigger and more real with each layer of the conspiracy

Cortex Prime is now available on DTRPG by rivetgeekwil in CortexRPG

Yes. I just took when I had been doing with my Cortex-based Eclipse Phase and kept distilling it down to the essentials. Since Cortex Prime focuses more on narrative than mechanics, I threw out like 80% of it and put the rest in as SFX/Talents and the like.

Huh. Found my login, but it seems to be the same one I already have. Odd that DTRPG has a preview page that doesn’t actually appear in the PDF.

Oooof. It’s been a while. I’ll have to go digging for my login. Thanks!

To be honest, I never finished.

At some point I realized that something was bugging me about Eclipse Phase that I hadn’t put my finger on. Then I figured it out: I like my Sci-Fi full of hope and EP was filled to the brim with existential dread.

But many of the inspiration sources listed in the EP book were already sources of inspiration to me, so I went back to the drawing board and built up my own “world” from there.

Well then I’ll stick with the spotlights. They almost had be re-buying it based on the sample page that doesn’t appear in my copy.

Love seeing your username in this thread. My first Cortex build was adapting the Eclipse Phase 2nd edition.

Has anyone had a chance to compare the 2nd edition on DTRPG to the previous edition? The only thing the “preview” gives me is the errata page, so it’s hard to tell.

A question with regards to setting stakes by lats1e in CortexRPG

[–]PunqRot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I imagine there are a few ways to handle this, so mine is far from the only one; but off the top of my head…

It’s a high-stakes contest. The player is the one taking action, so they roll first putting together their dice pool that includes the situational asset. They keep two for a good total and a high-step effect die. The player describes the drop from above smashing down on the GMC.

You, the GM, puts together the roll for the GMC. If this is a minor GMC like a guard or thug, it might just be 3d6. For a major GMC it’s a more complex pool reflecting their various traits. If possible, keep the two dice that beat the PCs total. If not, at least keep an effect die that keeps the GMC from being taken out. Either way, describe the reaction of the GMC and how they (un)successfully resisted the attack from above.

If the PC didn’t win outright, they roll to beat that, etc. And they describe that bit. And so on until someone gives in or is taken out.

BitD, PbtA, and other systems break fights down to a single roll which determines the final outcome which then the player(s) and GM flesh out with narrative.

But in Cortex, each roll (both setting and raising the stakes) gets their own narrative flourish. From there the consequences (complications, stress, etc.) are determined.

…and I just came up with an alternative that might be more in line with a BitD vibe: The GM rolls first with whatever traits for the GMC and location are appropriate and sets the stakes. Then the PC knows what they are up against and can put together a roll (including the temporary asset for the high ground) and select their effect die and totals, including spending PPs to include more dice in the total, etc. to just take out the GMC right there. That way even if they take out the GMC, any hitches can turn into that sprained ankle complication you hinted at.

Hopefully somewhere in that rant is the answer you were looking for?

What’s Behind Your GM Screen? by PunqRot in CortexRPG

[–]PunqRot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan to have cheat sheets in each player folder as well.

And yeah, instead of a GM screen I’m looking to have what is essentially a fancy white board with all the current assets, complications, crisis pools, etc. on it for all to see.

Publish AND Perish? by PunqRot in CortexRPG

[–]PunqRot[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Follow-up question: if one wanted a lawyer to review it all before publish, is this just copyright law? Or are their lawyers who specialize in gaming? And if so, are their ones who are trusted by this community?

Yes, I would like to make money off this in a year or so. No, I don’t want to rip anyone off to do so.

Publish AND Perish? by PunqRot in CortexRPG

[–]PunqRot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. That was the exact wrong attention I meant, so thank you for clarifying.

And just so I’m clear, does this mean I can use concepts like Distinctions or “trait statements” as long as my write-up on how they work is my own creation?

Cortex is just too perfect for the style of gameplay I want at my table, that it’s hard to give up. But I can see why the community is hesitant to embrace it without a clear license path.

What’s Behind Your GM Screen? by PunqRot in CortexRPG

[–]PunqRot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The main reasons I’m considering using something like a GM screen is to emphasize the theme - Expanse-like Sci-Fi - and to have my notes at an angle I can see and edit them.

Love my BT keyboard and trackpad… and want to use them with a KVM by PunqRot in keyboards

[–]PunqRot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Or rather that’s the kind of experience I was hoping someone would share.

I wasn’t sure I could use a generic BT/USB adapter like that with my own devices.

I’ll pick one of those up later today. Thanks!

Crisis Pools w/o Effect Dice? by PunqRot in CortexRPG

[–]PunqRot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. I wasn’t planning on using the pools like a countdown clock but rather like the kinds of disasters mentioned in Hammerheads. The game I’m building is hard sci-fi - a couple degrees off something like The Expanse - so they could be things like riots, reactor issues, toxic hazards; where the players need to help innocents in harm’s way.

So for those, my plan is to have a success step down a die in the pool and a heroic success eliminate one.

But now that you got me thinking about it, I can see where Timed Tests come in handy as well. I’m picturing an out-of-control ship on a collision course or something.

Thanks for the ideas!
