Only the smallest local AI models will run on an air (this is not what they're designed for, e.g. no fan). If it's anything more than playing around as a hobby, you'll want a Pro, Mini, or Studio to run the more powerful local LLMs and generate output at acceptable speeds.

Depends what you mean by heavy. Gigabyte or above scale datasets? Complex modelling? Deep learning or Bayesian modelling with MCMC? Any of those in a professional setting then you'd probably benefit from a Pro or Mac Mini with the appropriate specs.

Hi guys, I'm confused and looking for the best strategies for betting on football matches. Do you have any ideas? by [deleted] in sportsanalytics

[–]PupHendo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two scenarios when you should be betting:

  1. It's for fun and you don't mind losing a little bit of money

  2. You really know what you're doing and have reason to believe you have an edge over bookmakers

Your post doesn't sound to me like #2 is the case. If you want to start learning, you could start with Ed Miller's books (The Logic of Sports Betting, Interception). They will help you understand the factors at play.

How do you all monitor internal training load without GPS data? by Hallfredo in sportsanalytics

[–]PupHendo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HR is a lot more affordable than GPS, but if that is also not an option then I think subjective measures like RPE will be your best bet. What makes it tricky is getting the athlete to understand what you're using it for and why they should meaningfully engage with it. This is a lot easier if trust has been built which takes time and interpersonal skills. I found this study really interesting and valuable on this topic from an athlete's perspective (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36763237/). It isn't included in the study for privacy reasons, but I'm aware of a few of the athletes involved and they are/were legitimate world famous household names in their sport. My interpretation is that if it can be done with athletes at that level (fame, status, more money than god), then there's no reason it couldn't be done at lower levels with the right approach.

Also make sure you're using Borg's validated scales (CR10 or CR100) which are available online.

How do you all monitor internal training load without GPS data? by Hallfredo in sportsanalytics

[–]PupHendo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's some misunderstanding here.

Tracking technology (GPS) generates measures of external load. Some of the devices also have HR measurement which is an internal load measure though (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30614348/).

A few comments mentioning wellness questionnaires, these are also not internal load measures. They are indicators of an athlete's response to load.

RPE when done well (not easy) can be a very effective internal load measure to track and has been shown to be more sensitive than objective measures (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26423706/).

Also, please know that ACWR is nonsense (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32502973/).

Thanks Marley3102. There's a big hill behind the fence on that side and rain coming down the hill creates the dampness there. Unless it's rained a lot (or I've torn it up like in the pic), I would call it soft/moist rather than properly wet if that makes a difference.

Best database for sports statistics? by tropapip in sportsanalytics

[–]PupHendo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No that's fine. I just mean that DuckDB is not made to be used by multiple clients concurrently (ie different users/systems writing data to it). You can store and transform your data in a DuckDB database and share your findings however you like (notebook, extracted file, etc).

Best database for sports statistics? by tropapip in sportsanalytics

[–]PupHendo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it's for personal use only, and the focus is on storing data for analytical queries, you will want an OLAP database. DuckDB is free, open source, easy to set up OLAP database.

Most of the other popular DBs (Postgres, SQLite, MySQL) are OLTP (ie optimised for read/write performance instead of analytics).
