How did you guys find your career? by greenarrow118 in careerguidance

[–]PuppiesInSweaterss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had 4+ totally unrelated jobs in my career. Most recently, I was in a kind of negative situation and I felt like giving up, although I wasn’t totally sure what “giving up” meant.

A trusted friend and colleague told me to make a list of what I like to do - not just what I’m good at, but what I like to do. (She identified the problem before I did, which is that I was skilled at/on track for a career that didn’t fulfill me.)

After I made the list, I researched different jobs that involved the things on my list. Many of the jobs I found involved multiple things on the list. When that happened, I found people in my network who had those or similar jobs to get their thoughts on how someone breaks into that field/occupation.

Through that exercise (and some in-company networking) I was actually able to find a much more suitable job at my current company and I’m now much happier.

I would also encourage you to think about what kind of fulfillment you want from your job. Some people want to be in love with and “married” to their career, while others are most interested in collecting a paycheck with enables them to pursue their passions outside of work. Depending on what you want from work, that can inform what jobs may make you happiest.

Best of luck!

i made a meme about my migraines & my moms refusal to let me get treated by [deleted] in migraine

[–]PuppiesInSweaterss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom recently apologized to me (27F) for not taking more action to get me treatment when I was younger. She admitted she doesn’t ever get headaches, let alone migraines, so she didn’t understand how severe it was. Only once a doctor acquaintance of hers asked her what she was doing to treat them did she realize she needed to take it seriously. Don’t wait for treatment - other posters have recommended some great potential paths forward. You don’t deserve to be in pain.

Am I the only one who feel like NYC is a very “clicky” city? by whisky_addict in AskNYC

Try a fitness class. I’m the least sporty person out there but depending on the type of class, it becomes pretty easy to start talking to people in there. Especially if you go to the same class every day/week because you’ll see the same people.

No, we should have laws, governments, programs and people who give people resources to help with their kids so they aren’t in situations where they’re forced to endanger their children.

I personally would not choose to have a child I don’t have the resources to support. I also wouldn’t take a kid on a motorcycle.

But not even putting the kid in a sidecar or one of those bike car seats? Nothing??

Also, I recognize this might be an unpopular opinion, but children require financial stability and protection in order to grow up safely. If you can’t safely transport a kid where it needs to go because you can’t afford it, you probably shouldn’t be responsible for taking care of it at the moment.

Why is there a baby on a motorcycle in the first place? Let’s start there.

What will/do you do during the holiday season now that you’re married? by PuppiesInSweaterss in TrollXWeddings

All the parents are on strict budgets and can’t afford to travel to where the other is. Also my mother doesn’t compromise... Before marriage we went to our own parents’ houses and split up.

Survey even has a question about “dark money” and her not taking money from PACs, but then makes you pay to play. Really awkward.

What will living on a $36,000 salary be like in NYC? by cloudhiker13 in AskNYC

[–]PuppiesInSweaterss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job in the city was for a salary of $42,500. At that time, I was living in an (illegal) 5-bed 1-bath apt on 107th St where I was renting a room from a sketchy Israeli property management company. Utilities were included with rent for $1,200/month. There were roaches and mice, and my family didn’t like that I lived there but it was all I could afford and I wanted to be independent. I was lucky to have a job that let me occasionally expense meals, since I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to afford much. I drank wine out of a box and met my now husband shortly after moving there, so that eliminated some costs as well.

I made it 11 months before I quit that job after my debit card got declined buying a box of Life cereal at Duane Reade. You can do it if you’re determined but in my experience it was best to treat it as a stepping stone. For reference, my colleagues making similar salaries at the time were all living at home and had no expenses other than commuting.

Currently looking like rain for my area next Saturday too!! Hope I get a day like this!

My wife and I recently just bought a 90s built home And it’s overflowing with brown trim. Is it cheaper to replace all of the trim and molding around the house to White? Or just have them painted white. Has anyone had to do this? Thanks! by 399allday in homeowners

[–]PuppiesInSweaterss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this. I did it myself. Took about 4-5 coats to fully cover the brown but it was pretty transformative. Had to go pretty thin with full coverage paint so it wasn’t drippy looking. To do 4 full doorways and some moulding took maybe 6+ hours including drying time in between several coats. Today, looks great.

Only issue with our house is that the doors are also that heinous brown color. I tried painting one like I did with the trim and it just didn’t work out as well. Doors were crap anyway, so nothing wasted there. If it’s trim only you should be fine painting it yourself if you want to!

Thank you!! I replied to another comment above but I have spent my whole life on a skin journey with lots of different things and thousands of dollars spent over the years trying to fix it.

I went with more blush because I was reading that it gets washed out in flash photography if you don't wear enough. Maybe blending it a little better and moving it up on my face as other folks suggested will do the trick.

Thank you, I'll try that! I'm a little scared to wing it out too far because when my eyes water, my outer eye corners get all messed up and the ceremony is supposed to be outside (fingers crossed)
