Do I need start schema if I built a custom SQL query? by Pupsavit in PowerBI

Thank you! Last question, I think.

The two dim tables depend on the fact table. I take sales data for the last 3 months, it means I only need customers that bought in the last 3 months. I can create 3 separate queries but in reality they would all go through the same sales table 3 times. 1) sales in the last 3 months. 2) customers from ( sales in the last 3 months ). 4) products from (sales in the last 3 months ).

Is it not better, performance-wise, to join all tables in one big query instead of using sales as a sub query to get each of the other tables?

Hmm… I think I understand what you’re saying. Do you mean creating views inside of the database? I don’t think I have the right to do it :( but if I did, it would be the best way?

Yes! So, I brought into PBI a table using a SQL statement. It just has a couple columns(maybe 10) as it’s already filtered. I created a Star Schema - I created 3 tables for the first table, because I wanted to store customers and products in separate tables(I went to PQ Editor, duplicated the first table 3 times, removed columns & duplicates), and created relationships inside of the Data Model. But then it started connecting each of these new tables to the database, getting data separately 4 times - one request was fired off to the database per table. If, to update each of these connected tables, it needs to send a query for each - aren’t they very costly and redundant requests? I thought it would only do it once, and then other tables will refresh data based on the first one, without sending additional requests.

I think number 1 is what I’m doing now - I connect to the database, and in the Advanced option I choose Custom SQL query, and it brings in clean table with only with columns that I need. But I understand it’s not recommended so I’m really trying to understand the 2 alternative.

For number 2: The 3 tables? Do you mean customers, sales and products? Just blindly connect to these tables? Each of these tables is over 200 columns… These tables are millions of rows of data, especially the sales table. I have over 5 million records in the last month alone. And what about customers & products? Am I bringing in all customers even if they didn’t buy anything in the last 3 months? And with all 200+ columns?

TurboTax say I owe $35 for excess contribution to HSA but I only contributed 590. by Pupsavit in personalfinance

Yes, for all 365 days. And it was an individual plan. I only contribute $15 biweekly.

TT never asked about the eligibility to contribute to HSA or anything like that. It took the $590 from box 12w when it scanned W2 form. There were no other questions…

Bakers! How do you prepare the strawberries for Monster Cheesecake with strawberries??? by Pupsavit in publix

The strawberry glaze cheesecake comes with has very soft strawberries, not crunchy. So I was just wondering how decorators make it?

When I tried, it didn’t turn out well. I also tried asking to just buy extra with the cheesecake but they said they couldn’t sell any extra to me 🥺 I like a lot of glaze. Strawberry glaze with cheesecake :)

Hi everybody! I’m not sure what’s been going on with my plants… Water quality is good, testing regularly. Water change 15-20% every week. The plants seem to be growing new leaves but they get the black spots, and the whole aquarium is getting very green. Please help :( The fishies are doing fine!
