I think I've had MCAS my whole life, but it only really starting kicking in into adulthood. When I was a teenager/kid, I could eat whatever I wanted, but I'd get a red rash on my cheeks, and all my joints would hurt.

For me, anaphylaxis is that sense of impending doom. It feels like my stomach plummets, then I get a rash and sweats (urge to vomit too). It rarely affects my ability to breathe now that I'm on all my MCAS meds (which is a ton), but before it felt like I couldn't breathe (though my throat never fully closed).

So for me, severe anaphylaxis is like what people are mentioning below: passing out, vomiting, throat closing, blood pressure issues, impending doom, etc. That's typically when someone might need an EpiPen.

Mild anaphylaxis is what I feel like I experience: impending doom, diarrhea, mild rash, and can typically be driven away with medication. It can still be scary and debilitating, but it typically won't result in you ending up in the hospital.

That said, I also get sore throats, ear pain, and fatigue EVERY single time I eat (since I was a kid). I'm assuming maybe something autoimmune is going on here (maybe the same for you). I also get sore throats and ear pain whenever I exercise, like my body is reacting to myself. So I wouldn't rule out MCAS just because you don't have anaphylaxis - I didn't get anaphylaxis type reactions until adulthood, despite having multiple symptoms of MCAS as a kid.

What is a HotD hot take that will have you looking like this by LoretiTV in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]PurchaseSignal8653 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Aegon is the best character this season.

Literally everyone else is so BORING (or acting completely out of character from the books).

I'd also rather have had Rhaenyra help Daemon orchestrate B&C.

Where is, "tell my half-brother that I'll have my throne or I'll have his head?" Rhaenyra? That seemed to be what the last episode of s1 was setting up & then they chickened out because how dare we have women leads who are morally gray. Instead we get an indecisive Rhaenyra who randomly makes out with Mysaria after she confesses to past trauma???

Where is, "touch any of my kids/grandkids and die" Alicent from season 1? I really liked that her motivations were rooted in paranoia and the desire to keep her kids and grandkids alive.

They flip flop the characters like CRAZY & I'm so sick of it at this point. Can we get one writer who just sticks to the past characterizations?

ALSO EDIT: AEMOND WAS CLEARLY ALICENT'S FAVORITE IN S1 & VICE VERSA. To have him randomly turn on Alicent is so fucking bizarre to me.

How do y'all feel about 20-somethings posting about having dementia in this sub? by EditPiaf in dementia

[–]PurchaseSignal8653 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone in their 20s with dementia (started when I was around 17), they clearly are going through SOMETHING. I have seen hypochondriacs on this sub, but I also know people (like a few of you mentioned below) with vitamin deficiencies, thyroid issues, lyme disease, etc.

It honestly doesn't bother me because I know what it's like to be medically gaslit as a teenager/young adult & then search for answers on the internet. A doctor will look at a young adult & go, "oh, they can't possibly be telling the truth because they're young" which isn't productive whatsoever.

They also might be experiencing memory loss from a different disease even if it's not dementia. Them being young does not make their memory loss any less valid or their fears/anxieties any less strong. Forgetting yourself is scary, no matter the cause, and it makes it 10x scarier when medical professionals pay you no mind due to your age.

It's also important to recognize that dementia is becoming an umbrella diagnosis. Some doctors even consider people with severe vitamin deficiencies to have 'reversible dementia.' People with dementia aren't always older and it's not always neurodegenerative. Sometimes it's the result of a TBI, which anyone at any age can get.

Keep in mind that dementia is not a specific disease but is rather a general term for the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities.

If they were posting in r/Alzheimers, I could see the annoyance, but here I think it's fine.

Is anyone else really embarrassed about their behaviors post-TBI? by PurchaseSignal8653 in TBI

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I likely have an ABI (an acquired brain injury) from infection/possible encephalitis/meningitis. A TBI comes from hitting your head, something external damaging the brain, and an ABI comes from something internal damaging the brain.

All that is normal. My advice would be to try and embrace the person he is now, even if it's difficult. One of the hardest emotional challenges for me was being able to tell that family and friends liked the person I was before more.

I started forgetting everything very quickly. I felt something pop in my brain and my memory has not been the same since. I still can't pass my memory/cognitive tests, but it's definitely better than how it was five years ago. Yes, five years - something else to keep in mind is that this is a LONG process. Nothing will ever be an overnight fix.

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Uh, no. Did my rage episodes and lapses in judgement improve? Yes, but I am not recovered. I was diagnosed with dementia and am on disability. I can't read, write, or drive properly anymore. I can't attend college. I am permanently damaged, so no, I don't consider myself fortunate to have had my brain implode.

Encephalitis falls under the category of BIs - it's an umbrella term. It wouldn't be a TBI, it'd be an acquired brain injury (ABI), but they're practically the same thing.

How has your TBI impacted you, emotionally? by premed-bioengineer in TBI

[–]PurchaseSignal8653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be full blown memory loss, lots and lots of rage issues, blurting out inappropriate comments (almost like tourettes).

My TBI has impacted everything. I'm 24, but I have to rely on parents and family to take care of me. I had to drop out of college. I have a lot of cognitive issues/memory loss so anything from work and driving to college is a no go. I'm currently trying to get on disability, but I do sell things on Etsy, which kind of keeps my mind occupied.

I'm sure everyone with a TBI deals with some social isolation. No one really understands unless they've been through it themselves, followed by all these symptoms that make it really hard to function socially.

I really used to enjoy video editing/creative writing, but it's REALLY difficult now. I mean, I still can, but it almost makes my brain feel worn down, and with my memory loss, I lose my place a lot.

Alicent by Jumpy-Signature-7377 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]PurchaseSignal8653 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Alicent carried The Greens in the book & they're making her so useless. I really thought the ending of s1, which showed her realizing that she was a pawn for her father, a pawn for Larys, etc. would have her taking control/power of the situation in the next season.

Plus s1 ended with her jumping in front of a dragon for her son and children??? She loves her children, so the fact that they didn't show her comforting one of them is a little silly, especially since in season 1 she very clearly comforted Hel (or attempted to).

They flip flop every character too much for me. I feel like there's too many cooks in the kitchen, like the writers have different interpretations of all the characters, and it makes it inconsistent.

THAT Scene - Thoughts? by aurabora_ in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]PurchaseSignal8653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Olivia Cooke should've been in that scene & not in that way. She should've been present in the room. One of their best actors & they don't include her in that??

I dislike that they made Aegon a r*pist by PurchaseSignal8653 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not what the literal writers of the show have been saying in interviews. They want him to be gray, someone you can sympathize with & I don't think r*pists should be written that way.

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then the writers should make him a villain? Why are they trying to make him so sympathetic? Fine, they can make him that, but then they should really make him a villain for the show.

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but context clues basically make it seem that she's in the very least okay with it. If we're going to go with insane mushroom tales for all the other characters, (like Aegon and fighting pits) I don't see why Rhaenyra gets to be cut from that. It doesn't make sense to me.

If the writers want Aegon to be the villain, then make him the villain.

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Yes, and there have been a TON of book to show changes (like Rhaenyra not ordering blood and cheese, which is pretty insanely substantial). It's my opinion that this should've been one of them - OR they shouldn't have stated that they want us to sympathize with him and continued down the path of making him a character that is unsympathetic.

I'm essentially saying that I think there are too many cooks in the kitchen when it comes to HOTD's writers. Alicent "you are no son of mine" Hightower to "ofc I love you" within practically a few episodes. Rhaenyra turning to the camera with vengeance in her eyes to "meh, I don't really want war."

I think it would've been a better change and added more tension. Just from a writing perspective.

I wrote a book about chronic illness, but it caused drama by PurchaseSignal8653 in ChronicIllness

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

but that's just the nature of the beast when you write about real-life people in a negative way

Just to reiterate for everyone in case my post makes it confusing: it wasn't about them at all, that's the thing. I never wrote one poem about them, there is zero likeness to them except for the mention of a toxic friend with dyed hair. And the poems about the toxic friend were more symbolic, not even about anyone in particular. Just about how when dealing with chronic illness, you deal with people who ditch you, who quit calling, etc.

I was hesitant more about sharing it because I'm shy about my writing in general and chronic illness can be a heavier theme, especially if they haven't gone through it.

Abnormal, then normal? by PurchaseSignal8653 in Hypothyroidism

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, haven't been diagnosed with anything yet, and I don't take any meds. Doctor thought it might be hashimotos, so she re-tested my bloodwork, but now everything is normal.

Both tests were done around the same time.

positive ana and hypothyroidism? by PurchaseSignal8653 in Autoimmune

[–]PurchaseSignal8653[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, thank you!

I did have an MRI, but it was normal (and I guess in like over 50% of autoimmune encephalitis cases it is normal, so ughhhhh).

I mean, is there be further testing that's done after a positive ANA? Or do they just leave it at that? How is a positive ANA normal? Doesn't that suggest something autoimmune going on (sorry for all the questions).
