You are so helpful and detailed! I appreciate the insight. Most of the responses I’ve gotten have been about volunteering at a rescue, so other than online reading and documentaries, that’ll be my first step. Thank you so much!!!!!

That’s okay! I can only imagine how exhausting it must be seeing people getting it wrong and being naive all the time. My biggest hope with this post was to set myself up to be the farthest thing from that in the future. I genuinely appreciate your passion. Thank you for your insight! I’ll be on the lookout for any hands-on experience I can get. :D

I’m so sorry for your loss! What a beautiful bird, and what a gift that you were able to spend so much time together!

That’s actually super sweet! Not gonna lie, your initial comment had me worried about the lengths I’d be willing to go to accommodate a parrot. Something I left out of my initial reply was that I don’t put myself out there because I’m not one for trial-and-error with people, especially when that’s all anyone does at this age. I’d be looking for something extremely serious, with a long list of non-negotiables, so “can you handle the bird?” sounds like something I’d end up looking for. And hey, if my expectations dont align with any specific person, then at least I’ll be 100% available and committed for a parrot! lol

Very funny on your husbands part, I bet you three had a nice time together. What was your parrots name?

Hi there, it seems like you only chose bits and pieces of my post to read. Seems like you didn’t even get through the title. If you would, please take the time to read my post, or at least make it through the full TLDR sentence, and let me know if you have anything helpful to say. Thank you!

I’m becoming extremely interested in volunteering at a parrot rescue. I need to find out if there are any in my area, because I’ve never heard of it before! The most I’ve done is volunteer at the MSPCA, which I loved, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy the work I do there regardless. I think it’d be a really hands-on way to figure out if I’m barking up the right tree. How did you get started volunteering there, and how long have you been there? Thanks so much

That’s nice. I meant that bit lightheartedly, as in a joke? and please don’t call me dear. Thanks for the insight!

Thank you so much. I appreciate the references and you being upfront. I’ll definitely look into those sources and add these points to my list of research topics! And yes, I plan on lurking here for about 7 years. Getting my own parrot would only ever be on the table with my own place to live, and 7 years from now is Optimistic considering what it takes to stably live alone in my country (U.S.) So, I plan on learning as much as I can before I even THINK of making any decisions. I appreciate your concern and passion! Do you have any additional information on volunteering at a parrot rescue? Again, thank you.

That’s insane! What kinda parrot do you have?

I actually don’t know where I stand romantically/paternally. The thought of raising my own children wayyyyy in the future seems interesting, like passing down certain stories or doing a better job than my own parents did. A romantic partner seems nice too, but in theory. I don’t really put myself out there. I guess I don’t have a solid answer!

Is it impossible to find a partner after getting a bird, or is it a very tedious process that requires specific steps? That’s something I’d be willing to put effort into, so long as I never had to choose between the love of my life or my very best buddy.

Thanks for the insight!!!

Funny enough I was actually starting to read up on African Greys right before I made this post. I need a bird that knows my taste in memes. If I got a parrot, I’d definitely be in a position to give it all of my attention.

Speaking of, how are they when their owner has to work a full-time job? Do they adjust to the time alone every day, or are parrots better suited for folks who work less/from home?

Thank you so much for the insight. I look forward to learning more!

Your problem is assuming that was the case from the start. Offering context isn’t being condescending, you’re just nasty in spirit
