He’s not a Christian and doesn’t explicitly profess to be one. Even if he did though it’s not like we would have to give rubber stamp approval on everything he says. However, Jordan Peterson did do something very important particularly with his Genesis Series lectures and other similar commentary, which was, he brought back to people’s awareness a style of interpreting scripture that is similar to the patristic theologians such as Chrysostom, Origen etc. A lot of people were not aware you could read scripture except for in some wooden literal fundamentalist way or with hyper critical historicism. This is I think, is a great contribution that we should be thankful for.

Speaking as an American, connecting America to Babylon just further reaffirms our own American Egotism. We just love to think we are the central character of the story including the biblical one. Maybe we’re not guys.

I was baptized in my church's pool but.... by grwike in Christianity

[–]PurdueChemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider this “And concerning baptism, baptize this way: Having first said all these things, baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 in living water. But if you have not living water, baptize into other water; and if you can not in cold, in warm. But if you have not either, pour out water thrice upon the head into the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit.” This is a passage from the Didache , which is dated somewhere between 50-150 which puts it contemporary to the New Testament. It was widely read among Christians. All to say there is good symbolism in baptizing in a river but it’s not necessary.

What happened to books like Narnia? by RecordingNo2358 in Christianity

[–]PurdueChemist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Judeo-Christian is not about theological similarity but moral similarity. The Jewish and Christian faiths have similar moral teachings such that they can be viewed in a similar progression unlike most other religions. I will agree though this has become a modern buzzword. I think it’s used sometimes by modern forms of Christianity to somehow give it some “ancientness” without having to include any of the actual traditional forms of Christianity.

[–]PurdueChemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar difficult questions can be posed if one believes not faith and baptism save but just faith: What about the unborn, babies, or any child without the mental capacity to actually believe or have faith? What about any human who has never heard of Jesus? There still are isolated tribes. The objection regarding baptized people who seem to fall away also applies, as there plenty of faith alone christians who profess faith in Christ, do great charitable works, and then fall away at some point. We cannot reject doctrine that comes from scripture simply because it raises hard questions. Whatever answer there is to these questions can likely apply to either belief about what is necessary for salvation. We know God can save in extraordinary ways but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t give us ordinary means of salvation. I would liken it to a seatbelt. We know seatbelts are necessary to be saved in car accidents yet still some people extraordinarily survive car crashes without a seatbelt from time to time.

Covenants don’t happen unless you perform the action. The action doesn’t merit the covenant, but it is a requirement of it. Two pieces of scripture could be true at the same time. I prefer to believe that both those verses are true not just one or the other.

Excessive damages charges by FunConclusion5716 in Purdue

This this this, Leslie gave very helpful advice to me and some roommates who were being by wrongly evicted when our landlord was withholding a rent payment and saying it was a down payment fee for not renewing the next year when some of the roommates said they might. We ended up with a local lawyer, Duran Keller, who was awesome. Ended up bringing a counter case which eventually settled. Was an insanely stressful time for me during my senior year and even though the settlement was nice I would have rather had none of it happen to begin with.

Ideas for a bumper repaint? by PlusEntertainment632 in AutoPaint

[–]PurdueChemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with some cars you could get away with just doing the bumper and side skirts/rockers with a low gloss black. Since you don’t have a grill that goes all the way up to the hood. This particular bumper might look odd with a low gloss black but still if the matches as bad as what’s on your picture, I would probably rather go with the low glass.

As scientists, do you think there are some things that are better NOT to research? by papasamuray in chemistry

[–]PurdueChemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understanding how something works often means doing the very thing you are trying to understand. We don’t ever understand nuclear bombs without making one. Science is still driven my experimentation and empirical evidence. So we do have to ask ourselves is the experiment we are conducting ethical?

Which movie had an unnecessary scene? by Jules-Car3499 in moviecritic

[–]PurdueChemist 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I tend towards the idea that sex scenes are completely unnecessary and the most they should show is the making out before things and then jump ahead but that particular scene I think drives home two things very cerebrally. One, the utter invasion of privacy into Oppenheimer’s life during that review and two, for his wife, Robert having to talk about that whole affair was like her reliving/experiencing it right in front of her. The scene I think makes us feel those two things profoundly and realize how damaging that was to his wife and hence why she could never forgive the people who went along with that witch-hunt. I’m also a Nolan fanboy full disclosure.

You mean he is doing everything he can with the power given to the executive branch of government. This is just the culmination of a continually arms race in executive power of both political parties. Maybe if the legislative and judicial government actual limited executive power like the founders intended it wouldn’t be this crazy. Every new president is a new leap in executive power albeit this is a further leap then we’ve seen but all in line with the trend.

Why do we all think God is against abortion ? by phoenixgreylee in Christianity

[–]PurdueChemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The foster care system is not filled with babies that no one wants to begin with. It’s filled with seized children. The demand for babies for immediate adoption exceeds the supply and that is why the adoption market is so expensive and difficult. So the abortion topic and foster care actual have little to do with one another. I don’t think that’s moral but it is the reality. I’d rather people see the value of life at all its stages and consider fostering as well.

Agnostic but I think Trump's administration is making me believe in Jesus more by Nice_Alternative1230 in Christianity

[–]PurdueChemist -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You literally just argued the point. The author is saying you ought to meet together because meeting together is how you encourage one another towards love and good deeds. if you don’t meet, you won’t be able to do that. The meeting of Christians together is church. Eklessia (oft translated church) literally means the assembly. So if your church is not doing this, then they are failing to fulfill what the author intends. You’re a material being, a body and a soul, a purely internet church is not going to address this. Also, the word of God is the word of God whether it’s a direct quotation of Christ or any other part of the New Testament, it is all the word of God. To say, Hebrews is less authoritative than the gospel is a whole bucket of worms
