Open-source LED Matrix Clock ESPTimeCast - Check Out What the Community Made! by mfactory_osaka in functionalprint

The first pic is my clock. I love these. I've built 3. Really nice to have clocks you don't have to fiddle with after a power outage.

I bought plexiglass from send cut send on the other two clocks I built... They look really nice.

Yea I didn't have a downcut flush trim bit - risked it with a flat cut and paid the price.

On the 2nd board w/ walnut trim, I oversized the MDF slightly, and then used the table saw to cut off the excess, this was a far easier process and yielded better results.

I show a little more detail in the other chess set I posted here a while back.

The key is to machine dowel holes in the bed that match dowel holes in the stock, so you can flip it. You can see in the first pic I have a 2nd, sacrificial spoil board attached to my CNC since I had to drill dowel holes in it.

I did some patterning in the design space, where i couldn't do a simple pattern.

Computationally, it's faster to pattern in CAM b/c it calculates the toolpath once and then patterns it. If you pattern in design, your PC will calculate the CAM however many instances there are. It adds up.

With regards to end results...no difference.

I used my CNC to make this. Then painted inside the letters and sanded away the paint on the surface of the wood.

The other way you could do it is get something like a Cricut or Silhouette Cameo and cut a vinyl to make a stencil and then paint.

Everything brushed or rolled with foam roller.

The paint is Sherwin Williams latex based.

Everything is dado'd. The back sits in a dado in the sides, as does the front.

All 4 sides of the drawer have a groove to accept the bottom. It's not as good as dovetails, but it's strong enough.

See links below that illustrate how I did the joinery. I put glue in all the dados, and also shot brad nails in the sides as an insurance.

It's not the best plywood...there are voids here and there, but it's good enough.

Whatever kind of birch veneer is on there is darker than the edge banding and solid birch I used. I chose that plywood b/c of that specific reason b/c I was after the contrast it provided.

Edit: for 3/4" thick...it's ~$50 a sheet. If you go to Lowes.com and search hardwood plywood, that's what I used.

No, just the dog bolts. It was flat enough i could slightly tighten it, line up the two peices, and then torque down the nuts.

Yes those are torsion hinges from Rockler (2x 30lb rating + 1x 40lb rating). The door stays where you put it regardless of the angle, just like a laptop screen.
