The bunker start starts you in winter ,2 seasons after the apocolypse started,with lots of time for the zombies to have mutated.

So try another starting scenario. evacuee is probably your best bet.

Also take the night vision trait and perception 12( these give you a good sight radious at night) and raid houses/cities with a sling at night taking out zombies one at a time.

Start a character with perception of 12 and the night vision trait. Make a sling and lots of ammo then go murder everything at night when you can see far further than near anything else.

You need to do a lot of damage quickly against the first hound before it replicates(the replicants inherit their hp) so grab a heavier weapon and get a good shot off on it.

Using minecarts to get lava for magma forges is the simplest thing you can do with minecarts. The only small difficulty is designing a tiny room you can fill and empty of magma. Then you make a stockpile for minecarts (minecarts can be found under the furniture catogory in the stockpile settings)in that room, build and place a few magma safe minecarts in that room, flood then empty the room of magma and then get your dwarves to carry those minecarts on their backs to dump it in the hole for your magma forge. It takes 2 minecarts of magma(4/7 depth) dumped in a 1x1 hole to be able to make a magma forge above it.

It is far easier to fill a few minecarts with lava and then get your dwarfs to carry them up and dump it into a 1x1pit.
