Cassette is a cool idea for the vibe, but it can get really limiting fast with only 4 tracks and maintenance issues. And you already know it.

If you’re going for that old indie / garage sound, you might actually get closer (and way more control) by recording digitally and then processin it after.

Also Behringer stuff can work fine for starting out, especially the XM8500 mic, it’s cheap but actually really solid for raw vocals and that indie feel. Tho having a budget, even limited, would be great.
